Stay on target, stay on target: Banjo 3 is on the way this year photo

For those awaiting the next installment of the Banjo-Kazooie series, it has been confirmed by Microsoft that Banjo 3 is "still on target" for a 2008 release. Microsoft expects the Rare platform game (about a bear that gets a bumming off a bird, I've been told) to be a holiday hit for the Xbox 360. Hopefully it adds a dab more color to a console full of gritty shooters and gritty industrial cities full of grit.

"As announced at E3 last year, the next installment in the popular Banjo franchise is still on target for 2008," an MS spokesperson declared. "We share the excitement of Banjo fans worldwide as anticipation 'builds' for the game's release later this year."

In the eyes of some gamers, Rare took a step down in quality when it was eaten by Microsoft, and it's at least true that well made games like Viva Pinata didn't do too well. Hopefully, Banjo 3 will be a solid platform experience that sees a return to creative form, but will it translate into sales for a system that is still regarded by many as a "shooter" box?

I'm personally looking forward to this. I never got a chance to play the prequels, but it's been a long time since I had a good old fashioned, brightly colored, innocent platform game. Sometimes you need the simple things in life, no? I fear it will not do too well, even if it's stellar, but we wait and see. The 360 is certainly starting to build a more varied library, so you never know.

Get ready to collect a shit load of widgets. The first one was a lot of fun though, way better than Rare's boring Donkey Kong 64.

Dear god, I don't care if the game is delayed, PLEASE LET IT BE GOOD. I don't want to think about what I'd do if they screwed up Banjo-Kazooie.

YES! Banjo-Kazooie! Wow, after I listened to the heavy metal remix of the Banjo theme in Kameo yesterday, I got so psyched... And now this! But I can't really get my hopes up. Rare is certainly not what it used to be, at least not what it was in the late '90s. Playing through Kameo was a slap in the face. How can this company that marked my childhood with its beautiful in every way games (DKC series, GoldenEye, Banjo-Kazooie, Blast Corps, Diddy Kong Racing etc) be making such brainless and devoid of all signs of their old charm pieces of crap like Perfect Dark Zero or Kameo? Rareware died when Nintendo sold it. Their only saving grace is the new Banjo game but I'm afraid that they'll screw even that one up. There's always hope, of course...

I bought into the Xbox 360 for three things.

1. Dead Rising
2. Halo 3
3. Banjo Kazooie

So far, I have not been disappointed.

Oh and Jim while it may not be Conker, Banjo is not exactly innocent... One of its staples and the reasons we love the games is the brilliant humour and clever dialogue found within.

Man, I loved the Banjo-Kazooie titles. The whole game is basically a fetch-quest, but a very fun and well-constructed fetch quest with lots of wacky humor, so it's excusable. Kazooie is awesome. Even as a little elementary school kid, I loved her snark. xD

Let's pray Rare doesn't screw this one up. Disregarding Donkey Kong, the BK franchise was one of their biggest back in the N64 days, and managing to successfully revive it now on the Xbox will hopefully silence their critics for once.

I'm nothing but optimistic about this one. A light, fun adventure game with platforming elements and humorous writing is just what we need in the midst of all the FPS games.

Screw Banjo, I want a Jet Force Gemini sequel. The only thinkg holding that game back on the 64 was the controller and the hardware. Other than that, it had wonderful design. A dual analogue version would be absolutely gorgeous.

Ummm... Mario Galaxy and Ratchet and Clank would both seem to fit that bill (Mario more so, but still) and they're not exactly obscure titles.

Let's be clear.

Rare did not die when Nintendo sold it. Rare died when Free Radical left it. You'll note Tooie is a ridiculous collect-a-thon devoid of the charm of its predecessor. (Even though I full completed it like a fanboy anyway)

Nintendo were just smart enough to cut away the dead weight before they hurt them too badly.

Perfect Dark was extremely good even when former employees were leaving during its creation. OK, Tooie was not as good as its predecessor (but still good though) but not necessarily because the old ones left... I suspect the ones that made Banjo-Kazooie are still with the company, actually.

And I still haven't played Star Fox Adventures to have a truly complete opinion.

Even if SM64 is a more groundbreaking title, try and tell me that the Snowman's Land level is better than Banjo Kazooie's Freezeezy Peak. You can't, because you'd be wrong. THAT'S how good the original BK games were.

Still, if the Xbox gives the graphics a Bad Fur Day-style facelift, whilst maintaining the playability of the N64 games, it'll have a very good game on its hands.
