Stats won't transfer to Mass Effect 2 in obvious way photo

Commander Shepard’s abilities and statistics won’t transfer to Mass Effect 2 in an obvious fashion. Retooling of the game’s core systems has made raw character data carryover impossible. But don’t start throwing things yet. Mass Effect 2 will know if your character was a level 60 Geth stomper with a Renegade edge and acknowledge it. Also, as an added bonus, the game will explain away the stat wipe.

Mass Effect 2 lead designer Casey Hudson explained the stat wipe and the reasons behind it to Computer World. “There's something that's happening with the story that explains what happens with your abilities. It's something we can't go into detail about for obvious reasons, but it actually happens the other way around. Our goal with the story, in terms of getting the game started quickly and players into really compelling story situations ... that dictated and allowed us to do certain things including changing the way that your abilities work and the way you develop your character.”

Hudson goes on to explain that “literally every system” in the game -- inventory, guns, stats, etc., -- have been improved, thus prohibiting a straight transfer. The designer adds that BioWare is “taking into account all of your accomplishments in terms of building a character from the first game. So things you'd expect to be acknowledged, like if you were a level 60 character, or you were highly Renegade and don't want to start out at the middle again. If you import your save game from Mass Effect, these kinds of things will be acknowledged in ways that map across to the new system. You will feel, even in terms of the character that you build, that you are continuing as that character.”

Even outside of the technical issues with a straight stat and ability transfer, this move makes perfect sense: imagine the uphill battle it would be for a first-time player to go through a game created specifically for Mass Effect veterans. It would be rough to say the least.

got i put hundreds of hours into my character replaying my same persona again and again because he was badass and i thought all my states, armor, weapons, everthing i worked for would transfer to mass effect 2 like they said. Now that i know that i've wasted my life away on a lie... I feel like saying fuck you to bioware and not buying mass effect 2. But i have to because i consider mass effect the greatest game of all time. SO GOD DAMNIT! Im also pissed that i can't replay my same character over and over again like in one. Why do you take things away from the player. Shouldn't you be giving the player as many choices as possible instead of hitting them over the head and kicking them while there down? /end rant

I'm pleased with this decision for precisely the reasons mentioned. Starting a brand new game in some sort of New Game+ mode wouldn't feel right.

I want to know how the game is going to be with out transferred saves. I accidentally deleted my save. Quiet honestly I think there should just be a few questions before the game like, what class you were, who you saved, who you killed, who you fucked, etc. Just for those people, like me, who accidentally deleted their save.

Really they have no other choice. If you STARTED with the same stats that you ended with in the last game and were still able to build levels upon that, you'd basically be I-can-see-the-code Neo by the end of it. Then imagine carrying THAT in to ME3......actually that would be bad ass. Fuck this.

Pretty sure they never said "everything you've done and everything you own and all of your attributes will transfer over," but hey...freak out if you want.

Personally, I'm glad they announced this. Imagine starting the game and having 100 points to put wherever you wanted. And this was your first time playing a ME game. Where would you even begin?

My guess is... you'll get injured when the Normandy is destroyed or something. And so you'll do a bit of recovery. Also, as this is later on, all guns and armor will be modified to be more effective against the Geth. Or something...

...So what? They're gonna pull a metroid?

If this means an improved inventory system then I'm all for it. I don't think Shepard should be kept as he/she was at the end of ME1, seeing as he'd be far too powerful. Even scaling the enemies up wouldn't work; by ME3 Shepard would just be a giant robot with laser eyes. Cool, but not practical.

I know how it will happen. Metroid style.

And it would serve them right for not playing the first one.

I would have loved to take a level 60 Shepard and improve upon that guy.
Think about it. Shepard is a soldier in a long war (3 Games at least) so he should continuously improve on his abilities.
Also Shepard is already a pretty outrageously badass guy, so making him more and more badass would just be a logical progression.
The game I was waiting for the most just got a little negative point. :(
Still gonna buy it though because ME1 was awesome.

I'd rather they save the resources they'd have to devote to retooling the game for the level 60's and put it to use creating a better game.

20 minutes in, nobody is going to care about stats from 2 years ago, and we all know it.

...I spent a week making a new character and getting it to a respectable level after getting a new HDD due to the transfer thing. Gawd dangit.

Just give me the level, Paragon/Renegade stuff (so you can put points into Intimidation again) and the stat points for the level and it sounds fine with me. I don't really want to be stuck with my first character's experiments in stat points anyway?

Maybe it will unlock another highly original story where you first set out to save the world from aliens, but then in a shocking twist you have to save the galaxy from aliens. Oh, wait...that was the story from Mass Effect. Never mind.

I'm still floored by the fact that people actually believed they would be able to carry over a LVL 60 character with maxed out stats. How would they be able to write and balance a game that had to be challenging for that type of character and still be able to satisfy a first time player?

The idea that a company OWES you something for playing a previous game such that you MAXED out your character is laughable. If they give you something extra for being a loyal fan, then good for them (and you). If they don't, so what...you got your enjoyment out of playing the previous game...get over it.

Haha, all you who clocked ~100+ hours of gameplay byu simply replaying the game, did you REALLY think that you could start out the new game as some kind of a god (when compared to complete newcomers)?

They said your accomplishments in leveling will be taken into account, cry sum moar.

@Br0th3rGr1mm

Such a thing was done in Baldur's Gate 2 and in Wizardry 7 & 8, as well as others. It's not a question of "how can they balance it?" because it would only take a grain of imagination to figure out how to do that- Scaling/alternate introductions/so on. Instead it's a question of budgetary constraints/time constraints/ or simply they just didn't want to deal with ironing out programming snags.

I don't believe I am owed anything but it does feel... misleading.

Yeah I'm with you. They should definitely leave more ends loose for players to tie up.... such as how many times we want to play through a game with our character.

Carrying over your stats would also make the game too unbalanced. It would either be too easy, or enemies right from the get go would be maxed out to. Plus leveling up is kinda the point in an RPG.

I just feel like making the game "scale correctly" with starting at level 60 is just...silly. That means every biotic would START the game with powerful versions of push, stasis, lift, singularity, and spectre training. At LEAST. They'd have to make a dozen new spells and upgrades for ME2. And then for ME3? Same thing.

At least, in theory.

It's the same thing I see happening with WoW in the future. Each expansion adds 10 more levels of talents. What if it goes on to level 100? There will be rows and rows of talents that will be harder and harder to balance.

So Commander Sheppard gets amnesia so new players can mold his/her abilities from scratch and those with game saves can just load in previous stats?

You can't seriously expect to start the game out at lvl 60 and then blow all your opponents away. You have to expect that Shepard will be scaled to ALL NPCs not just enemies. Otherwise, you'd be running around with a lvl 60 char and lvl 1 squad members fighting, what, lvl 60 enemies or lvl 1 enemies? It just doesn't make sense. And if you're lvl 60, squad members, start off at lvl 60, and enemies are lvl 60 what's the point of that? Don't be pissed because you spent 200 hours playing Mass Effect and not going on dates.
