Start looking forward to Lost Odyssey 2: Microsoft expects big things photo

It's no secret that a fair few of us on the Destructoid staff are huge fans of Mistwalker's amazingly touching RPG, Lost Odyssey. While it was a sure thing that this was the beginning of a brand new RPG franchise, it should please fans that the sequel is almost definitely in the works.

Speaking of Lost Odyssey's 100K Japanese sales, publisher Microsoft has stated that it expects the series to grow as time goes on. Putting on my analyst's hat for a moment, I would expect Microsoft to attempt to have Lost Odyssey become the Xbox 360's definitive answer to Final Fantasy. If you can't get Square-Enix to share some of its RPG pie with you, the only answer is to bake your own.

What do you guys reckon? Could Lost Odyssey grow into a series that rivals the Final Fantasies? What are your hopes/predictions for the sequel? Let us know with your delicious comments.

[Thanks, Elyk]

I really thought that Lost Odyssey kind of disappointed me, and it will never rival Final Fantasy. Ever.

Lost Odyssey was a great game, but I don't know how another one just like the first would be like. Too much sob stories would wear a person out to a point where they wouldn't feel like going through anymore.

If they made the second game more like Final Fantasy, though....

As the wise Waldex at GamePro once said:

"the ps3 IS better.... besides.... the xbox360 is a machine built by homos, and master chef is their homo god and the homo fanboys are praying that one day master chief comes and stick his homo dick into their homo asses. THE HOMOS PLAY WITH THE 360... REAL MAN SPEND REAL CASH FOR A REAL GAMING MACHINE!!!! GO PS3!!!!"

So, there. Who cares about 360 games. They are for homos. Try again, Sterling.

I haven't played LO yet, but an immortal main character seems perfectly suited to a series.

Will it rival Final Fantasy? Only time will tell.

Well It will never be final fantasy...

I don't see Lost Odyssey being in the same developers hands each game, and it just seems unlikely that future Lost Odyssey game reinventing the way way they do the battle systems...

I mean Final Fantasy is still experimenting, although if the game can live up to the first one's greatness, then people could actually get excited for other quality sequels after that.

We'll see...

I'm all for it, but please make the endgame a bit more varied/less grinding as in Blue Dragon Disc3 or LO Disc4. Maybe I'm just old now, but I never minded doing all the sidequests in FF7.

And the story would have to be different everytime like in FF. And while they are at it, make the main storyline a bit better. The small stories in LO are expertly written, but I have no idea who they let near the main storyline.

When I first heard about Lost Odyssey I thought it was going to be like Phantasy Star 3 where he game was set over a long period and you got to play as Kaims descendants/ mortals got older.
It would be cool if they did this for the next game.

I can see this easily rivaling Final Fantasy but I can also see it easily flopping.
Mistwalker has opened a HUGE history book that still has plenty of spots to fill in on so I could see more Lost Oddyseys coming out which I will buy straight away.

They could do prequels and sequels which would be good but they could also work on little tangents and develop other immortals of that world or other characters already seen in the first game.

Then again, we wouldn't want them to start milking this series to bits like Square-Enix -_- fuggers

If they do turn it into a series I hope they do it more like Final Fantasy. By that I mean that they don't base every game in the same world. One of the reasons I like Final Fantasy so much is because it is constantly reinventing itself, so if Mistwalker can expand Lost Odyssey I'm all for it.

I'm not finished the game, but I'd rather see it stand alone. If not, I hope they would have completely new characters in it. I like geoffuws' idea above as well about playing as the descendents of Kaim. I would enjoy that.

I just started it a couple days ago, but so far I am more than pleased with the game. What's neat about a possible series as I see it is that the characters are immortal, therefore your settings and characters can easily change from game to game as you move to different points in the Immortals' timelines. Or even with new main characters, and the old Immortals make cameos (assuming they don't die and I just haven't reached it yet, which is definitely liekly).

Final Fantasy hasn't been really "it" since FFX, and FFVII before that.
I'd like to see Lost Odyssey become the next real RPG franchise. Square has fallen off, Star Ocean 3 was a mess, and Dragon Quest is eschewing the consoles for now. It's a player's field, so I'm happy to see some new blood trying to take the crown. It would be great to have another RPG renaissance.

Its done by Hironobu Sakaguchi, he made final fantasy, and if anyone can make something to rival it, its the original creator.

Honestly I don't know whats happened to Square recently, but I don't like it. Its like that girl you knew growing up that was really hot, but you come back to a reunion and she's all bloated and has a litter of children.

12 absolutely broke no ground

Battle system was from final fantasy 11
The world is from final fantasy tactics.
The character designs look like they are from final fantasy 10.
The story was very bland and not very impressive for a final fantasy. I don't think 7 was "it" but I can say 12 was bad and I cannot give praise to a game just for the name. Honestly if it didn't have the name reviews would have given it a 7/10 or a 6/10. Ever since Sakaguchi left the company the games coming out of square-enix have been very par to sub par. When I play a final fantasy I expect a enthralling narrtive experiance with a bar set for all rpgs to follow it. 12 in no way did this.

Deiga- VII was revitalizing for plenty of reason. I felt that the battle system was new and inventive. Between the active time battle and the materia system, battle felt both fast paced and meaningful; an important step after some of the grind fests of the previous generation.
The story was pretty epic; I'm not saying it was the best in the franchise, it fell apart pretty bad toward the end. It was fun though and I cared about the characters.
Not to mention Square basically was able to convince an apathetic market that they LOVED role playing games.

Final Fantasy's VIII's battle system is probably one of the worst I have ever seen in a RPG. The draw system is so damn tedious. All you do is just draw magic from the enemy for half an hour until the player has a 100 of that magic. I couldn't stand this game lol. (Granted off topic, but oh well)

The way i see it, Lost Odyssey 2 will only be really good if the guys at Mistwalker want to make it and intend to make it. If the only reason they are making is because MS wants them to make it, then their is a good chance the series will go downhill... thus is the fate of many sequels

I also disagree with LO being like final fantasy where each game takes place in a different world and has no relation to the previous games. Seriously, that's one thing i never really like about FF... doing something like that just screams trying to make money through name recognition; that's the ONLY reason to do something like that (what connects the FF games have gotten thinner and thinner with game). i mean, if each final fantasy game was named something different each time square might put even more effort in the game to make sure it sells... do we really want LO turning into another FF? can't we do what FF does but give it a new name (like it should)?

Nah, if LO2 carries the LO name then i would expect to be ATLEAST in the same world as LO... as it should be for games that carry the name or its predecessor

If they make a sequel to Lost Odyssey I hope it retains it's status "a whole hell of a lot better than Final Fantasy", and doesn't sink to FF's level of shitty. LO outperforms all the FF's combined.

I for one would like to see a sequel that could make me tear up as much as LO did. If you're tearing up or emotionally responding in some other way, that means the writing is good.

sorry kids, but FF is legend- saying otherwise is rediculous. one game wont topple that no way no how. why compare to FF anyway? that wont affect LOs greatness any. i think LO should try to be its own beast, doing its own thing than be known as 'the answer to FF'.
i wish nothing but the best for LOs success, but i believe that its lunacy to say one game outshines one of the gaming industrys greatest and most well known franchises.

Wow! You ask a question and get a bunch of Baffoons.

Well Jim not only should they make a second one they should make it a little more open ended.

I am on the third disc (Liking it alot) and if I had a wish it would be more freedom to explore (maybe that will come in disc 4)

I felt in Blue dragon I could really explore every nook and crany of the world (by the way I liked blue dragon as well)

I have not had the WOW factor in a long time but so far this game has made me say WOW alot.

The best way to continue Lost Odyssey as a new rpg franchise is to keep it in the same world but uses different characters. they can even take a page out of the Suikoden series from Konami by revealing even more of the world only hinted at in the first Lost Odyssey. Maybe even set it before Kaim was even born or hundreds of years after the events of the first game where those same events have influenced how the world has changed since.

In terms of writing the storyline they can always look to another Japanese novelist to come up with something that's different from the first LO but meets the criteria of what sort of story a next LO game should be. Maybe even hire a different manga artist to create the look of the next game. Make it so the franchise always has a different novelist and artist creating the sound and look of the game.

RPGs is a genre that's tailor-made to become a long-running franchise and still be able to come up with new storylines and maybe even innovate a few things here and there. I don't think an LO franchise will end being like a Madden or a Guitar Hero where nothing really changes from one game to the next.

when i think "final fantasy" i think of turned based combat and a strong story...and FF seems to be moving away from that a little bit, with FFXII (combat). if they dont go back i'd like to see LO take it over.

Lost Odyssey is the best RPG I've played since Chrono Cross.

And I've played a lot. However, there's not a game on the PS2 that has been so well told and balanced. The PS2, while a great system, having tons of RPGs, was lacking quality from many of its titles. I know that someone will argue that FFX is better, but sitting the titles side by side a t this point, there is no comparison. We were all blown away by how good the graphics were in FFX, that I think we forgot the downfalls of the gameplay. For instance, switching in and out all of your characters in every single fight, so that they would all gain experience is probably teh most tedious and worst combat idea taht they've had since the attack/cancel fiasco in FF 2 (NES version). (Yes, worse than magic drawing from FFVIII).

I don't think that Lost Odyssey will become the "new" Final Fantasy. And I hope for all of our sakes it doesn't. I don't want another man-boy protagonist, that we've come to expect from Square. The only way that I hope Lost Odyssey will take after Final Fantasy is in giving us seven quality titles before it begins to "re-invent" itself into a bland, piece of garbage.

And while I'm ranting, FF XII is the worst of all of them. There is absolutely no distinguishable features between any of the characters combat abilities. Also, the characters are barely developed, and the story is very short sited. How would you have liked FFX if it had ended when you first battle Seymour? About as much as I like FFXII.

Fianl Word: (Its been said before) "Lost Odyssey is the game that Final Fantasy XII should have been."
