Starmen.net assaults Nintendo of America with envelopes, books photo

You guys already know the score -- when there's movin' and shakin' in the way of EarthBound or Mother news, I'm usually the nerd on call to give you the skinny. And since almost every ounce of movin' and/or shakin' these days comes by way of Starmen.net, their appearance in the latest Nintendo Power should come as no surprise.

In Seattle for the 6th annual Starmen.net convention, site admin Reidman and his crew made tracks to Nintendo of America's Redmond headquarters to dump a metric ton of EarthBound- and Mother-related envelope artwork, a pretty swank Final Starman figurine and a load of copies of the EarthBound Anthology onto unsuspecting employees. The editors at Nintendo Power were pretty pleased and, plied with unique memorabilia and an outpouring of geek love, took Starmen to lunch at the headquarters' Cafe Mario and talked about -- what else -- EarthBound. The result of all this bribery? A nice spot in the latest issue of NP. Good on you, lads. You deserve the ink.

There's more, though: over lunch the discussion turned to EarthBound's forthcoming appearance on the Virtual Console. Some phrases and words were exchanged, and while Reid won't print exactly what was said, he states directly that the editors at Nintendo Power conceded the following: should EarthBound sell very well on the Virtual Console, chances of an official Mother 3 localization will increase.

Sure, it's by no means guaranteed, and this might just be the latest in a series of circumstances in which Nintendo of America has screwed with the piled-on hopes and dreams of Starmen.net and its devoted audience. But if EarthBound's VC sales truly have an impact on the company's stance on further localization of the brilliant RPG series, it certainly couldn't hurt. Plus, you were already planning on buying EarthBound on the VC -- right? Yes, yes you were.

It has been a constant source of shame for me that I never played Earthbound. I plan on correcting that as soon as it hits Virtual Console.

Note to self: I have to right to call myself "Hardcore" until I am half as dedicated to a game as the Starmen are.

There will be a campaign of epic proportions to get everyone to get Earthbound if it comes to VC.

I've never actually played Earthbound. Heck, probably my first introduction was Ness in the first Super Smash. When it hits the VC I'll definately buy it.

I've never played Earthbound either.

Though I have it here, right in front of me. It's saying "play me, play me", and I reply "STFU Bitch I'll get to you soon enough" and then it cries.

Hell, I'll buy the game just to make sure Mother 3 comes stateside. It''s one of those things that need to be done.

I played and beat Earthbound way back in the day.

And for the record, I liked the scratch and sniff stickers. I assume Rev's were the same ones that came in the Players Guide that came with the game. The Hot Dog smelled ok at least. And the monkey smelled like bananas.

Smelling Ness was just weird though.

Earthbound is one of the better rpg's to ever come out for the snes. I'm totally cereal when I say please buy this game on the VC so we can get a localization of Mother 3.

There IS a reason this game still sells for sixty bucks on e-bay.

But seeing as how the GBA is all but dead, would they really release Mother 3 in that format anymore? I mean, I know it still has a huge install base, especially with the fact that the DS can play GBA games, but the fact remains that nobody other than the Mother fans are going to give it a look, because the GBA is old news now.

I'm guessing that if Mother 3 comes to the Us it would be in the form of WiiWare. And also, it will be edited.

It's funny that the Starmen guys would go to Nintendo like that. It takes all of five sconds on the Starmen site that they are producing their own translation patch of Mother 3. Wouldn't that potentially piss Nintendo off a little bit?

I'll be buying Earthbound on the VC when it is released. I'll buy it for all of my friends, too. And their friends as well.

I'll buy it for random people on the street.

If there is one game I love above all others, it is Earthbound. I would murder each and every one of you in this thread if it meant getting Mother 3 translated and over to North America.

@Wedge: The S&S cards were full of awesome and win! I have no idea what the secret one was supposed to smell like, other than just plain awful.

Oni, this is the one from Starmen, but I don't have anything larger than that. Very readable, though.

Nintendo is so full of shit. Like they'll put forth the money to localize a GBA game for fuck's sake. Get real.

.......still...I'll end up buying Earthbound on the VC since I was never able to obtain a copy on my SNES back in the day.

i wasn't, actually, planning on buying it on VC: i have a perfectly good copy of it on the snes. but if nintendo wants to view it as "casting a vote" for mother 3 in usa, i'll do my duty, bite that bullet, and get myself a VC downloaded copy.

When they (starmen.net) when to NOA they were asking about how the translation was going and that they where excited. its in the starmen.net's article.

You know, you're not allowed to ask this on Starmen.net or Mother3.org (as questions like these open the floodgate to rumors, impatience, and the unwanted eyes of the C&C department of NOA), but I'll go ahead and ask:

How's that Fan Translation coming?

All I know is that if there happens to be a Mother 3 character in SSBB (Lucas most likely), there will be mass rioting in the streets and I will gladly take up a pitchfork/flaming torch and join in the ensuing chaos.

they don't give you what you want, they give you what will be beneficial to their marketing plan. Metroid and Super Metroid coming out a little before the new wii metroid? Seems fishy. You'll probably see Earthbound when decide to make a wiin button version of the game for the wii.

Since the day 'Everybody Votes' debuted I've submit "Should Mother 3 (Earthbound 2) be translated and sold outside of Japan?" with the buttons "Yes" and "Hell Yes."

I have done this every day.

Every day.

That's all I'm going to say about it.

I loved Earthbound, but how do we all know that Mother 3 is so awesome? Is it in some kind of playable form somewhere? I'll buy earthbound to play it through for the fourth time (probably with an equal joy as the first 3). Also, I want that Starman.

the reason why earthbound is amazing for simple reasons is because you finally weren't a magical knight but instead a normal surburban boy and the dialogue is so well written. the game just spews creativity every damn second. one of the best rpgs ever, hands down.

I'll buy EarthBound on VC any time, and as many time it takes to get Nintendo to bring over Mother 3. Even considering the fact that I got it FREE on emulator, EarthBound is the kind of game that deserve my cash. Beside, playing with a controller is so much better then playing with a keyboard !
