Stargate Worlds is opening to a closed beta October 15 photo

Today Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment announced (via 1UP) that a closed beta is beginning for Stargate Worlds on October 15. The slots for this round of the beta are apparently already filled, so the industrious lot who desire to get in on some Stargate MMO action will have to hound the official website and register for a future opportunity to see the game in action.

Stargate Worlds has been in development since mid 2005 and according to Cheyenne Mountain’s page, is based on the popular television series Stargate SG-1. The game will feature combat, stealth, crafting and pointless grinding for hours on end.

I haven’t the slightest idea what Stargate is all about. I know it has something to do with a time machine that looks like a wedding ring with Jello hanging out of back it. I also know there’s a mean looking alien with a moon tattoo on his forehead who carries some kind of lightning stick. Sounds exciting, but I don’t know if there’s much of a market for it. Are any of you interested in this?

I only recently started to watch Stargate SG1, I'm about halfway through season 2. So I'm kinda interested.

Also, it's not a time machine. It's like some kind or wormhole thing to other planets.

SCIENCE!!

I used to watch Stargate. It was one of those shows that you would watch when there was nothing on, and it was good, but generally I wouldn't seek it out.

I don't know that the MMO is anything but fan service -- an MMO with a Stargate skin, and I predict it will be one of the last MMOs to fail before people realize that WoW has that market cornered, and there isn't a piece of the pie left to share.

I'd be much more interested in a Mass Effect-y Stargate experience...the show is so character driven, I don't see how it would work -well- as an MMO world.

I liked the show.

I signed up in hopes to kind of "See" how this might be done.

We'll see.

Actually, there's a large market for this. The only questionable part is the quality of the game. RPS had some early gameplay footage of it, and it didn't look good at all. However, the trailer looked pretty good. So, I'm torn. We'll just have to see.

Any idea what the system requirements are?

I've watched SG-1 and SG:Atlantis for years. The shows combined have been on the air for over 10 years. So while not as big as Stark Trek to be sure, it's still one of the longest running sci-fi series ever, and has that going for it in terms of an audience. Although even though I am a fan, I am interested, but reserving judgment. We all no the track record of movie/tv licensed games.

Also, to second The Young Scot, the Stargate is not a time machine. It warps you to other stars. (At the risk of sounding snarky, its "Stargate," not "timegate.")

All the vids have looked awful so far. It's basically WoW with guns and a terrible UI and not WoW? :)

It looks like the worst thing to happen to Stargate since Atlantis....

I would much rather see a farscape or firefly MMO

Whormongr: The announcement of a Firefly MMO would make me collapse to the ground in uncontrollable spasms of pure joy.

Faulty,

There IS a Firefly MMO in the works. Do a little search here on DToid to find an article about it being delayed.

While the market may seem large at first (all Stargate fans), we then narrow to Stargate fans that play computer games (not much of a winnowing I'd imagine, but still), then those that play MMOs, then those that are willing to pay another monthly fee and put the time into another grindfest.

I can't see this doing well.

This will be as epic a fail as the last few seasons of the main show.

if this is like Tabula Rasa in Stargate then it has the potential to be pretty good. TR was a good idea, poorly executed.

If its just another WoW clone, pass.

If its a free MMO like Guild Wars, it might stand a chance with its gun/ship based combat. Stargate has always had potential as a decent game, problem is that they should have aimed for a normal console game first, with multiplayer added to help build an audience up.

Sure, Stargate fans will suck it up, as its the only game of its kind next to Tabula Rasa and The Agency (with its universe using modern and futuristic weapons). The whole MMO thing just turns me off though. I'd love to buy this game, but not as an MMO. Push it onto 360 and I'd check it out no probs.

As for the Stargate tv series, its actually pretty good. Ten series of SG1 and five of Atlantis, with more to come next year, its about time this series had some decent game support. After all, we've had plenty of Star Trek games over the years, so why not Stargate?

actually atlantis got cancelled i'm pretty sure,
they had a stargate game that was being made for the PS2 a while back but that got cancelled to.

Yes, Atlantis was cancelled. It was a mutual agreement between everyone involved, though it mostly came from MGM. They're going to focus on direct-to-DVD SG-1 and Atlantis movies, as well as the Stargate Universe series that's in development.

Also, the SG-1 Alliance FPS that they were working on was multiplatform, not just PS2.

yea i figured it was multiplatform.

i wasn't to happy that Atlantis got canceled, i was just getting into it whereas sg-1 i knew was going to be inevitable since it had been on for so long. The direct to DVD movies though were overall pretty good and fun to watch. so i hope the keep up the good work on that front.
