Starcraft II officially delayed to 2010 photo

This has not been a good year when it comes to delays on the games we're really hoping for. News that BioShock 2 was pushed back hit recently, Splinter Cell Conviction and Red Steel 2 have also been pushed back, and at this rate, we aren't going to have many new blockbuster games to play this Christmas. It's a lump of coal in a gamer's stocking, if you will.

A Yahoo! Finance article detailed that Activision had pushed Starcraft II back, coming to our attention mere moments before recieving an official email from Blizzard PR. Read a bit of that right here:

Today we announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will not be ready for release by the end of 2009. Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game. The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.

Our mission is to develop games that deliver an epic entertainment experience. As part of that commitment, we will always take as much time as needed to ensure that our games and services meet the expectations of our players and the standard for quality that we set for ourselves as developers. As we work to make Battle.net the premier online gaming destination, we’ll also continue to polish and refine StarCraft II, and we look forward to delivering a real-time strategy gaming experience worthy of the series’ legacy in the first half of 2010.

It's no surprise to hear Blizzard is taking their time on a game -- how long have we been waiting on Diablo III, after all? Still and all, this is sure to cause waves of disappointment in the Starcraft fanbase. Do you mind waiting a few months longer for the next installment?

I am so bummed about this news. I was going to buy a brand new PC for this game. :(

they are totally delaying this because of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Its too crowded with CoD:MW2 and whatever dares to challenge it this fall 09 season.

seriously though all these delays to first quarter 2010 is kinda bs.

I know a lot of people have been waiting for this game but I've been looking forward more for Diablo III than this title. Similar to Chad I was going to buy a new rig for Diablo III. But more time in the cooker is good I guess.

i wasn't aware that this game even had a tentative release date.
i'll wait, it'll give me some time to save up for a new rig.

Delay it as long as you want, Blizzard... as long as it's not because of another WoW expansion.

Who really thought this would come out this year? Its already august and still no sign of the beta, which alone will probably be a few months long.

They need to start the beta, until then the was not on the calendar for release.
Also the battle.net thingy I hope it works because after removing LAN support...

Might as well just delay the rest of the year to 2010. Details might be hard to work out though.

Looking at all these delays, I'm seriously wondering wich game I'll put under the christmas tree this year. Brutal Legend and Modern Warfare 2 are out of the question, because I want them as soon as they are released. Assassins Creed II is also out of the question, because I've gotten a Ubisoft game for Christmas since 2006, and most of them dissapointed me.

BlIt's not like Blizzard can't afford to delay however long they choose. If it results in a better game, then it would be a nice change from all the half-finished products that people have been put up for sale lately.

So other companies can release really good games on schedule, but Blizzard always seems to take forever even though they have the most money. Bullshit.

Any of you think companies are seeing another crash in the economy coming and that would be why they don't put out all those wonderful title this year as intended?

At least they didn't wait until the week of release, and then say "oh someone hacked our server" and then delayed the game for another year... *coughvalvecough*

The "beta" release of HL2 showed how far from done the game really was. I thought it was hilarious that Valve used that as an excuse to delay the game for fourteen months, when the truth was that they were just absolutely nowhere near finished with it. But hey, "our server got hacked" is a much more convenient excuse.

What were we talking about again?

I was expecting a pushback, and like all the other pushbacks I have one game to blame: WORLD OF WARCRAFT!

Maybe it needs more minerals.
But seriously, this is a relief. There are way too many games coming out on '09 already, and having them pushed back to 2010 means I have a chance of playing almost all of them.
And, the more work Blizzard puts on Starcraft II the better.

Not a lot of games at Christmas? What about Assassin's Creed 2, The Beatles: Rock Band, Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3: ODST, Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2, Brutal Legend, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead 2, WET, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2? What the monkey boner are you talking about? I'm not going to be able to buy all of them until next year anyway, especially since I plan on getting extra instruments to go with The Beatles: Rock Band, and I need to save up money to get myself a car.

Ah, screw it. Honestly, I was already pissed at a 2 FUCKING YEAR WAIT for the next campaign. Fuck Terran, I play to get to Protoss. This push-back just means I have to wait longer for the future releases. Damn you, Activision, and your grubbing for money! (fist of doom)

Not surprising in the least. I tend not to pay attention to any release date Blizzard puts down. I simply preorder and forget the game even exists, if possible. That way it's like surprise sex when it comes in the mail.

And don't forget people, this is a wait for ONLY the terran campaign, with no LAN whatsoever.

tsk tsk blizzard, tsk tsk.

Uhh... Reubachi, every version of SC2 is going to have LAN play with all races. The first one just going to have the Terran campaign and no other campaigns. I want to play all of the campaigns in succession though, not wait a year between each one, so I'm just waiting for the battle chest. That's why I don't really care about this delay.

Google provides yet again! Just double checked, there is no LAN in SC 2, because it "wouldn't work with the new battlenet" or some nonsense like that, who knows though.
