StarCraft 2 map editor capable of all kinds of badassery photo

StarCraft 2's map editor looks to be pretty robust, and Blizzard was happy to show off some of the power under the hood at Blizzcon. Imagine maps in the style of action role-playing games, shoot-'em-ups, and even first-person shooters. Blizzard was able to crank out examples of each from the new editor.

At a game play panel at Blizzcon, a third-person Action RPG and a Galaga-style shmup were shown off.  As VG247 says, with this kind of map-making flexibility and power, it makes sense that new maps might cost money. Of course, there will still be free ones too. Joystiq points to an FPS made using the editor, featuring a character model from the cancelled StarCraft Ghost. They say that this was created in just a few days.

I can't wait to see what gamers do when armed with this power.

Seeing the ridiculous things that people made with the War 3 map editor makes me excited about what will come of an even more powerful one. I mean, War 3 gave us soccer, clay pigeon shooting, a mario kart game, golf, and a 3rd person perspective RPG among other things.

Okay, this is cool. This makes me want to buy Starcraft II more than the actual game of Starcraft II does.

I personally played the shit out of custom maps in Warcraft 3 and this honestly just made my day. Custom map support is the greatest thing about Blizzards RTS releases and this just goes to show how much ahead of the game they are in releasing quality products.

Waiting for Starcraft is going to suck even more now. :\

60 fps sounds awesome compared to my laptop's 10 fps on Youtube videos.

I used to play Starcraft I RPGS more than I ever did the real game. This looks approximately one billion times better than SCI and WCIII's editors combined.

@phantomile
100% agreed.

Starcraft II just went on my "do want" list. And I hate RTS's.

God dammit Blizzard don't tease us with things even referring to Ghost, that's just cruel.

This has me more interested in StarCraft II. If I can get a slice of the world in a third person action sort of way, I'll be very happy.

Yeah, I don't like RTS either.

I'm getting flashbacks of Battlezone 1 & 2 (the Activision ones), Hostile Waters and Sacrifice from this. RTS games in where you play as a commander on the field are a total blast.

Man oh man this is a great thing even if it may not pan out to be as advanced as the a fore mentioned games it still could give a great C&C Renegade sort of game mode.

Soon enough Blizzard can afford to buy a country.

And make it prosper.

Did the header image remind anyone else that there once was a game called StarCraft Ghost that vaporized? I forgot about it up until now...

You and me both, Magnalon. I LOVE playing SC custom maps and RPGs, and go back every now and then to play even though my old computer sucks. I need to make sure my new computer can handle SCII with ease.

When I first saw all this while standing in line to play D3, the ideas that just flowed through my head were nuts. I am so looking forward to playing with this editor and to see what others come up with.
