Star Wars: The Old Republic will cost money, confirmed photo

Here’s some tasty Game Developer Conference 2009 leftovers. According to BioWare co-executive producer Dr. Greg Zeschuk, the price for upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will probably be based on the market at the time it’s released.

“The way we look at these things is, ‘What’s the standard at the time?’ Obviously we’re not quite done yet,” Zeschuk told VG247. “We’ve got a lot of work left to do. But we’ll be very conscious of how the market looks.”

I’m not a good analyst -- I said Mother 3 would be released stateside a total of forty times now -- so I won’t even bother with speculation as to what SW: TOR will cost. I will say, however, that I’m going to pay it. And I’m probably going to lose my social life and most work productivity as a result.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say... $50 retail with a free month of service, and then $15 for every month thereafter.

Despite a monthly fee and a personal objection to MMOs I don't think I will be able to resist this one, seeing as how KOTOR is one of my favorite games of all time. Here's to hoping this game kicks ass.

@bluexy:

Yeah, kinda like WoW has. That's basically the MMO standard nowadays, anyways.

Then again, I wouldn't be too surprised if we saw a slightly lower monthly fee, like $10, to attract more members.

I own a PS3 I don't like monthly fees... It's all Harrison Ford's fault!

Everyone does realize there was quite a speculation that SWTOR might have been micro-transaction based. Which would have sucked. Paying $1 here and there just for better equipment. This is good news.

MMO = Monthly Money Obviously

So far this looks like a day 1 purchase for me. I enjoyed the KOTR games and love most things star wars. I just hope it turns out better than galaxies. The time line leaves it wide open for content.

I'm pretty glad not to see a whole lot of these "paying for a monthly fee sucks." Clearly those people have not played an MMO. At least with my experience, which was predominately WoW, It was all I played, so I didn't spend money on other games that I would not necessarily play. Also you get constant (relatively) updates on the game.

So get a job and pay the 15 dollars a month. If it is a good game, it will be worth the money.

Are servers expensive? How much money does it take to host a server to support thousands of folks? Cause I'd like to know how much money it takes to cover the costs of server hosting and making a profit.

This seems like something you'd save for a Sunday when the only other posts are a contest winner announcement and Jim reporting on the Daily Fail.

do not want

@Chronic Logic: the servers cost money (and you need to have ~100% uptime, excluding scheduled maintenance and stuff), but most of all you need a dev team working constantly on the game and releasing patches and updates AFTER it comes out.

I am not going to get this now. I loved KOTOR on the consoles, but I'm not so sure about it being an MMO. I'm not spending money for online ON TOP OF the money I am spending on XBL.

Do want, it's a fucking BioWare Star Wars MMO, what more do you want from a Star Wars MMO? I don't mind paying $15 a month when I'll sink WEEKS into it :D

Same as WoW's current subscription rate. But since I let them renew it every month without checking, I don't know how much that is.

What if you dont HAVE 15 bucks a month to PAY monthly fees. Who in the heck dreamed up monthly fees anyway, all it does is push away people who would really want to buy the game. I mean... i dont have 15 bucks a month for this game, who does these days? I love both KOTOR games, and I dont want the first star wars MMO thats actually good to be ruined by monthly fees... its at best... Cynical (at best, imagine at the least)

Why not pull a GW and make it a one time purchase? That way, ppl that cant afford to be bothered by fucking monthly fees can enjoy the game.

Honestly... I'm a closet Star Wars fan. I fucking love Star Wars. I just am ashamed to admit it, because George Lucas has the Midas Curse. Only everything he touches turns to shit. See... Star Wars is only good when everyone is involved. Like a school project.

When George Lucas is left to his own devices. You get Darth Vader being a Gary Stu who builds C3-PO and starts the rebellion. If you truly love Star Wars, you'll fucking hate George Lucas, and Bioware. Because honestly... this game looks good. And that's what pains me. Because I know how the mmo scene is. I don't mind paying good money for this game, I don't mind waiting in line, that's actually a great way to meet people and start up a conversation or friendship. But I will NOT pay a fucking subscription fee. Who does Bioware think they are, when I have to get my ass up and go to work, and spend 3/4ths of my paycheck on bare essentials like food, gas, and bills, and they can tell me I'm S.O.L. (Shit out of luck) But then they expect me to pay a subscription fee?

I swear to God... if there's a subscription fee, I will do an all nighter with Samantha, and we will find this fucking game on UTorrent, and pirate it. And I will tell them via email that I am pirating it, just inspite of them, BECAUSE I'M NOT PAYING A FUCKING SUBSCRIPTION FEE!!! This is how you get things done. There is no reason for a subscription fee, when they are making more then enough profit by the initial cost. It's fucking Star Wars. You know it's going to do well. These people aren't struggling. And they think so little of us commoners, that "ah, fuck'em! They'll pay whatever we say, or they can just do without! Hahahaha!!!" Spinning in their leather chairs, smoking a big Cuban cigar, then getting up to kick a baby seal.

Even if the game was FREE, and had the subscription fee, you must suck at math if you do that. Because by less then a year, it has already exceeded it's value. No matter if it's fifteen dollars for three months, or a full year. The fact is, video games should not come with commulative costs. You're not doing enough work to insist on repetitive wealth accumulation, period. I don't care what you think you own copyright too. This is about right and wrong. And what you're doing is wrong, and I'm not going to tolerate it. I will just fucking pirate it until you learn to act like a human being. I don't know why George Lucas doesn't step in with THAT. Instead of making Vader even more ridiculous, why not he tell the people making games with the Star Wars logo not to be like the hutts, or whatever those space Jews were called? You know the ones. The blue imp things!

What's worse is I think if a lot of Star Wars fans knew me, they'd claim I wasn't a "true Star Wars fan". Probably because I don't know all the species names by heart, but mostly because I'm not willing to put myself in debt over a fucking video game. That's called DIGNITY. I know it's rare nowadays... but try to understand it.

This game looked amazing, I had high hopes for it. As I liked both Kotor 1 and 2. But I am not paying a subscription fee, that's that. And neither anybody else. And I refuse to go without playing a game that I would otherwise pay for, just because Bioware is greedy and arrogant. They can suck it. It's not asking too much for them to calm the fuck down and give the consumer a break. We're in a God damn recession. Gas is four dollars a gallon, food is costing more, they want to jack up your electric bill, and you can't even give me a game for just the initial pricetag? I may not be able to pirate electricity, gas, or food. (Well... maybe I could if I was Abbie Hoffman) but I can sure as hell pirate a vidya'. So fuck you Bioware. I need to do some kicking and punching to rage against the machine now.

Seeing as your post was made over 2 years ago I hope that you have wised up, Mr. Jim Profit... what about the servers that will be utilized for this game? they need to be paid for.. you're obviously ignorant as to the process of MMO games and need to steer clear of the game.... enjoy
