Here’s some tasty Game Developer Conference 2009 leftovers. According to BioWare co-executive producer Dr. Greg Zeschuk, the price for upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will probably be based on the market at the time it’s released.
“The way we look at these things is, ‘What’s the standard at the time?’ Obviously we’re not quite done yet,” Zeschuk told VG247. “We’ve got a lot of work left to do. But we’ll be very conscious of how the market looks.”
I’m not a good analyst -- I said Mother 3 would be released stateside a total of forty times now -- so I won’t even bother with speculation as to what SW: TOR will cost. I will say, however, that I’m going to pay it. And I’m probably going to lose my social life and most work productivity as a result.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
*shakes head in disappointedness as the amount of obvious involed*
Yeah, kinda like WoW has. That's basically the MMO standard nowadays, anyways.
Then again, I wouldn't be too surprised if we saw a slightly lower monthly fee, like $10, to attract more members.
Ok
So far this looks like a day 1 purchase for me. I enjoyed the KOTR games and love most things star wars. I just hope it turns out better than galaxies. The time line leaves it wide open for content.
So get a job and pay the 15 dollars a month. If it is a good game, it will be worth the money.
@Chronic Logic: the servers cost money (and you need to have ~100% uptime, excluding scheduled maintenance and stuff), but most of all you need a dev team working constantly on the game and releasing patches and updates AFTER it comes out.
Surprise! MMO with a subscription!
When George Lucas is left to his own devices. You get Darth Vader being a Gary Stu who builds C3-PO and starts the rebellion. If you truly love Star Wars, you'll fucking hate George Lucas, and Bioware. Because honestly... this game looks good. And that's what pains me. Because I know how the mmo scene is. I don't mind paying good money for this game, I don't mind waiting in line, that's actually a great way to meet people and start up a conversation or friendship. But I will NOT pay a fucking subscription fee. Who does Bioware think they are, when I have to get my ass up and go to work, and spend 3/4ths of my paycheck on bare essentials like food, gas, and bills, and they can tell me I'm S.O.L. (Shit out of luck) But then they expect me to pay a subscription fee?
I swear to God... if there's a subscription fee, I will do an all nighter with Samantha, and we will find this fucking game on UTorrent, and pirate it. And I will tell them via email that I am pirating it, just inspite of them, BECAUSE I'M NOT PAYING A FUCKING SUBSCRIPTION FEE!!! This is how you get things done. There is no reason for a subscription fee, when they are making more then enough profit by the initial cost. It's fucking Star Wars. You know it's going to do well. These people aren't struggling. And they think so little of us commoners, that "ah, fuck'em! They'll pay whatever we say, or they can just do without! Hahahaha!!!" Spinning in their leather chairs, smoking a big Cuban cigar, then getting up to kick a baby seal.
Even if the game was FREE, and had the subscription fee, you must suck at math if you do that. Because by less then a year, it has already exceeded it's value. No matter if it's fifteen dollars for three months, or a full year. The fact is, video games should not come with commulative costs. You're not doing enough work to insist on repetitive wealth accumulation, period. I don't care what you think you own copyright too. This is about right and wrong. And what you're doing is wrong, and I'm not going to tolerate it. I will just fucking pirate it until you learn to act like a human being. I don't know why George Lucas doesn't step in with THAT. Instead of making Vader even more ridiculous, why not he tell the people making games with the Star Wars logo not to be like the hutts, or whatever those space Jews were called? You know the ones. The blue imp things!
What's worse is I think if a lot of Star Wars fans knew me, they'd claim I wasn't a "true Star Wars fan". Probably because I don't know all the species names by heart, but mostly because I'm not willing to put myself in debt over a fucking video game. That's called DIGNITY. I know it's rare nowadays... but try to understand it.
This game looked amazing, I had high hopes for it. As I liked both Kotor 1 and 2. But I am not paying a subscription fee, that's that. And neither anybody else. And I refuse to go without playing a game that I would otherwise pay for, just because Bioware is greedy and arrogant. They can suck it. It's not asking too much for them to calm the fuck down and give the consumer a break. We're in a God damn recession. Gas is four dollars a gallon, food is costing more, they want to jack up your electric bill, and you can't even give me a game for just the initial pricetag? I may not be able to pirate electricity, gas, or food. (Well... maybe I could if I was Abbie Hoffman) but I can sure as hell pirate a vidya'. So fuck you Bioware. I need to do some kicking and punching to rage against the machine now.
