Star Wars: The Old Republic announced, everyone is surprised photo

One of the industry’s worst kept secrets has finally been confirmed. Today, LucasArts and BioWare announced the rumored Knights of the Old Republic MMO, and named it Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The game will take place three hundred years after the original KOTOR, but still thousands of years before the events of the popular movies. As a result of the timeline, players will be able to take part in a significant struggle between the Sith and the Jedi. Thus far both developers are mum on the real details of the game, like classes, races, release date, platform and how much George Lucas had to do with the project.

Even though The Old Republic is based several hundred years after the original KOTOR, it seems as though KOTOR’s storyline will have a significant impact. On the game’s official page it’s mentioned that the “legacy” of characters and “many of their descendants” will make it through the span of time. The authors of the website spent quite a bit of time writing about the conclusion to KOTOR, so expect Revan’s travels to have some bearing on how the MMO unfolds.

What do you guys think? Is this what you wanted? I know this is what I envisioned with a KOTOR MMO. I can only hope that this game will be able to compete with the ingenuity, stability and brilliance of Star Wars: Galaxies.

LucasArts and BioWare Reveal Star Wars: the Old Republic (Press Release)

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LucasArts and BioWare™, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS), today announced the development of Star Wars®: The Old Republic™, a story-driven massively multiplayer online PC game set in the timeframe of the Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic™ franchise. Star Wars: The Old Republic, being developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, represents an innovative approach to interactive entertainment, featuring immersive storytelling, dynamic combat and intelligent companion characters.

In Star Wars: The Old Republic, players will explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy. Players can choose to play as Jedi, Sith, or a variety of other classic Star Wars roles, defining their personal story and determining their path down the light or dark side of the Force. Along the way, players will befriend courageous companions who will fight at their side or possibly betray them, based on the players' actions. Players can also choose to team up with friends to battle enemies and overcome incredible challenges using dynamic Star Wars combat.

"Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is the most critically acclaimed Star Wars game in LucasArts history and a preeminent example of our company's interactive storytelling heritage," said Darrell Rodriguez, President of LucasArts. "For a long time, we've wanted to return to the franchise in a grand way, and we felt that the best setting for it was an online world that would allow millions of people to participate in the experience together. We knew that the developer capable of working with us to deliver an engrossing story with a fully-realized online world was BioWare."

"Traditionally, massively multiplayer online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars - combat, exploration and character progression," said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder and General Manager/CEO of BioWare and General Manager/Vice President of Electronic Arts Inc., "In Star Wars: The Old Republic, we're fusing BioWare's heritage of critically-acclaimed storytelling with the amazing pedigree of Lucasfilm and LucasArts, and adding a brand-new fourth pillar to the equation – story. At the same time, we will still deliver all the fun features and activities that fans have come to expect in a triple-A massively multiplayer online game. To top it all off, Star Wars: The Old Republic is set in a very exciting, dynamic period in the Star Wars universe."

Added Dr. Greg Zeschuk, Co-Founder and Vice President Development Operations, BioWare and Vice President, Electronic Arts Inc., "Star Wars: The Old Republic is set roughly 300 years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic, a timeframe that is completely unexplored in the lore. BioWare has been able to add to the Star Wars history in developing the game's story and has created an overarching narrative that players can enjoy, regardless of their play style. Our goal is to offer players an emotionally rewarding experience that combines the traditional elements of MMO gameplay with innovations in story and character development."

Additional details on Star Wars: The Old Republic features, gameplay and release date will be announced at a later time. For more information about Star Wars: The Old Republic and to sign up for future product updates, please visit www.StarWarsTheOldRepublic.com.

I'm not sure...I really wanted a super, awesome, and full-fledged KOTOR3, but after I see more of this game and how much I'll have to pay to play I'll make up my mind.

As long as they keep the story interesting and the gameplay fun, I'm all over this one.

The KOTOR games are among my favorite RPGs, even if KOTOR2 lacked some polish. I'm not normally a fan of MMORPGs, but this one certainly looks like it might deserve some playing time. Looking forward to more details.

see, this is how you explain tons of jedi and sith running around. Put it in a time period where there were tons of them running around!

It will be fun to watch this evolve.

I hate MMO and I have absolutley no interest in this.
Bring back the SP KOTOR.

I hope this fails faster than Star Wars Galaxies.

Galaxies was retarded cuz the time period didn't allow for Jedi's yet they gave in and allowed everyone to be one. But now it looks like Old Republic is gonna be retarded cuz it has Storm Troopers a couple thousand years early.

I'm a long time Star Wars fanboy, but I just started playing KOTOR for the first time (KOTOR2 is waiting in the wings!). I have to say, if the MMO is anything similar, it will be a huge hit. I think people need to calm down with the BioWare bashing until we can get more information about the game to make a judgement. So far I like what I hear.

Now if only they could fix the problem with it being an MMO and make it into a good game...

Also it's not "Bioware" proper but a new MMO studio setup in Texas, where all the SoE (SW Galaxies anyone) devs are.

Sorry, but I refuse to get excited over any game from LucasArts until such time as they release an "X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter II" sequel that takes advantage of modern hardware.

Fuck any more Star Wars RPGs and MMOs. Put me back in the cockpit of an X-Wing, damn it!!!

God-fucking-dammit. This sucks, sucks, sucks. I did not want an MMO. And 300 years after KOTOR? Bullshit! I want a direct sequel, a continuation and conclusion to the story of the characters I know and love. I'll give this a chance, but I am extremely, extremely pissed off. Also, I'd better not have to pay extra for the console version's online aspects.

@Paustinj, You make it sound like WoW had it's way with you.

Anyways, I couldn't be happier that this is official.
BioWare is absolutely one of my favorite developers. Maybe they'll decide to get the controls right, unlike every single MMO besides WoW. I mean what is it with MMOs that think it's ok for your character to look like it's sliding across ice rather than walking/running on actual ground?

Can't wait to see moar details on this!

I'm generally not an MMO player but I'd be willing to give this a try. I never get addicted to these types of games, though. Just get too bored too quick.

Hopefully there's a strong enough story weaved throughout the hacking and slashing and level grinding.

"Manning up" has nothing to do with it. Why can't you people understand that most of us prefer playing on consoles? Also, while it says it's a PC game, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see an Xbox port. After all, the first two were on both PC and Xbox. Anyway, I'll only bother with it if it makes it to consoles, and even then it'll still be reluctantly.

@funran:

Oh, please. Look, my gaming PC will crush any console that out there, but there is nothing wrong with consoles for particular games.

I've been putting a hell of a lot of hours lately into "Megaman 9", "Ratchet and Clank", and "No More Heroes". Duh. They're all on consoles. I've also been putting a lot of time getting into "Diablo 2" again. Score one for the PC.

"No More Heroes" and "Okami" are two of the best games I've played in a long time, but they would have felt completely out on place on a PC. Similarly, "Diablo II" would feel out of place on a console (to me anyway).

I really wish you people who put the focus on the box instead of the game would shut the hell up and just play games - regardless of what box you play the games on.

i'm not a fan of MMOs (the amount of time they entail, since i like to diversify my gaming experiences).

I am a fan of space though, so this and the star trek one have me a little interested. That is assuming they're not tedious (aka boring).

also, to all the people upset this is a PC game, think of it like this; it still probably wont be out for 18-24 months, by that time you can build a quad core system w/ the mainstream model of whatever the next graphics cards are (ATi 5500, nV GTX 350) for around $500 or under.

CPU $100
MoBo $75
GPU $150
PSU $70
Case $50
Mouse $50

most new cards now output hdmi, so if you have a HDTV you dont need a new monitor.

p.s. if im not mistaken wasnt the SWG MMO the blueprint for a MMO failure? I think that one was run by Sony though, so EA may or may not end up following in their footsteps. who knows.
