Star Trek Online to hit consoles as well photo

Today, Cryptic finally officially unveiled that they are working on Star Trek Online. Interestingly, not only PC players will have the ability to join in on the intergalactic fun. According to the game’s official page, it will also be developed for the console format. The game will utilize the same engine that is being used with Champions Online, so the natural indication is that Xbox 360 users will at least get the first crack at a home version of Star Trek Online.

In addition to format announcements, we do have a few details on the game. Much like the TV show, it appears that the theme of the game is discovery. Within this mold, players will be able to customize their own ships, train their crew, and then beam down to both planets and other ships for “face-to-face” confrontations. In addition to some mad Captain Kirk-esque hand-to-hand action, "thrilling space battles" have been promised. Shaking cockpit camera, Captain Kirk, Scott Bakula, or hot Vulcan women have yet to be confirmed.

The first gameplay footage will be shown at the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas on August 10 at 1:30 PM, so if you’re really excited, you can don that commander uniform and meet up with the team at Cryptic to see the game in action. Personally, I won’t be able to attend the convention, but I’m still excited about the prospects. When the game was thrown down the tubes originally, I was crushed. I’ve never been a huge fan of the TV programs, but I think the gameplay elements are certainly attractive. Hopefully as information pours out, I’ll continue to keep my lust afloat.

[Thanks, Andrew!]

That makes sense, because the youth that has consoles are very much in love with Star Trek. Especially with the best bits of Star Trek: Voyager and Enterprise which they might have seen on tv!

And don't forget that historically, Star Trek has been one of the most successful franchises to be translated to games, with the exception of Bridge Commander...

@Professor Pew: Even if they're not in love with Star Trek, kids know what Star Trek is. They know the basic idea and probably the main characters. That's more than they know about a completely new fantasy world, right? Just that little feeling of connection may be enough to get them to pick up the game.

Or not?

Well in all seriousness ThisYearsPink, they even cancelled all Star Trek plans after the failure of Enterprise. With the new movie as the one hope to revitalize interest in the franchise, the game would have to center around the newly recreated TOS universe. Which will probably also alienate the original fans who would fap over a sophisticated Star Trek Online on the pc (come on, Trekkies always have a pc).

Add to that the dumbing down of MMO's to fit on consoles... what the hell is going to be the target audience of this game? It sounds like it's gonna be another Star Trek Armada or something. Honestly, I have yet to meet a kid who only heard of Star Trek and thinks it's very cool stuff.

Ah well, you don't take a phaser pistol to a lightsaber fight anyway ;)

I'm conflicted. I like space & I like games taking place in the future. But i dislike MMOs.

@Pew
This game will not center around Abrams' reboot. No one would buy it, if it did. If they're smart, it'll be centered around "present day" Star Trek, around the late Deep Space Nine era.

Also, the kids on their consoles can fuck off. We don't need the gaming masses. There will be more than enough trekkies to fill the game up, provided it doesn't suck.

Well, personally I would rather see it in the TNG universe.

I'd rather not see it on consoles.

We all know that in order to suit console game capabilities, the things a PC can do will be removed in favor of balance/fairness:

It will become a mash button twitch fest style MMO, mark my words.
