Hey Trekkies and MMO fans, it's almost here. Star Trek Online will launch on Feb. 2 and as such the last minute deals are kicking-off. From now until the day of the game's launch Atari will be offering discounts and bonuses for both the Lifetime Membership and the 12-Month Membership.
The Lifetime Membership, which usually sells for $299.99, is reduced to $239.99 and offers players unlimited access to Star Trek Online for the life of the game. Thrown in with the discount are also two extra character slots, and a playable Starfleet captain who's been reclaimed from the Borg. I'm not sure what the latter does, but I bet it's pretty sweet.
Meanwhile the 12-Month Membership is $119.99 and will disappear come Feb. 2. This offer also includes the two extra character slots and saves you a bit of money over paying $14.99 every month for the standard membership.
Whose diving into this now that these savings have popped up? Or is anyone in the beta and can tell us if it's worthwhile? I would assume that the Lifetime Membership is something no true Trekkie could ever pass up, though its ability to allow you to live long and prosper is null and void.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But im not about to trow that kind of cash on the table without trying it atleast once. And seeing as there are no more beta keys I probably never will.

I haven't the time to play the beta or the money for a Lifetime sub. £40 is a bit much to buy this game. so I'll probably stay out of this one.
Do other other MMOs offer that sort of deal at all? Just seems a really good idea to me.
Thanks a million. I realy wanted to try it ever since I saw the feature on GiantBomb. :D
It is no problem. I know how badly I have wanted to get in a Beta before and not been able to. This time I do get into one but haven't the time play it it's typical.

I've only seen Cryptic doing this with their MMOs Its such a good idea. Heck I bet Blizzard will adopt this at some point. Think of all that money they would get from the constant players!
PvP is currently really unbalanced but that'll be addressed before release.
It's a bitch saving up for a Constitution class though.
The away team elements are less polished, the AI being erratic at best. It has a very KOTOR feel to it, which is never a bad thing. I'm holding out judgement too much on the away missions however, as I've only done a few.
It also seems much more instance/mission based than I expected, being less about actual exploration. You have explore 'missions' as such, but there doesn't seem to be any exploring for the sake of exploring.
I don't know if it will have the same longevity as something like WOW or EVE, however I'm unsure if that's actually a bad thing or not. The game does look like it will be huge, but not social life destroying in the same way as other more established MMOs.
The game is really cool. It feels like Star Trek. Space combat feels like spaceSHIPS, not twitchy zwooosch zwooschh fps action. Which is great. Ground combat feels good too, a bit like Tabula Rasa i suppose, but better thought out.
I'll definetly be buying it, in fact i already did.
HOWEVER, lifetime subscriptions are generally never worth it. I mean, Champions Online lifetime subscription anyone? Matrix Online lifetime sub anyone? Didnt get much use for those :P
I'm sure this game will get a loyal fanbase, because as i said, its a cool game.
But it is an mmo, and it is just 1 game. You will NOT be playing it for the rest of your life, possibly not even through the entire year (if content isnt pumped out).
So imo, a lifetime sub isnt worth it, no matter the mmo. Possibly for WoW or EVE, but i'm tired of those, so no not even there :)
Still, I am such a Star Trek fanboy I can see myself devoting a lot of time to it.
@Scroll: You get a free ship at level 11, those prices are for extra ships, the purpose of which is beyond me.
Except it's still a good idea, with the expansion every couple years or so, they will still be getting a constant income. It's not like everyone will want to go for a lifetime.
For WoW it is not a gamble they'll get new subs its basically a fact. It the reason behind Activisions pricing on MW2. People will buy into it.
"Get real, Blizzard wont ever offer lifetime subs for a simple reason. too many lifetime subs doom a game. "
Huh.. weird.. it worked great for LOTRO from launch. Not really sure what crevice you pulled that statistic from.
Oh thank god, either cruiser, escort or science right?
I REALLY enjoy the space combat, and I sorta enjoy the ground combat, but I absolutely can't stand the way the world is set up. Every single area is an instance, the world is chopped in to bits and it really breaks the experience. Imagine if in WoW, leaving Ironforge brought you to an instance, and when you got to another town or ANY QUEST AREA you went in to another instance. Sounds exciting, doesn't it?
Been playing this game for a while and I love it. It's without a doubt one of the most interesting and fun MMOs I've ever played.
That being said if you are a Star Trek fan and always wanted to live the fantasy, here is your chance. It will only get better as time goes on as those of us comic book nerds experienced with City of heroes. There will always be whiny bitches coming out of the woodwork who do not like the game you are playing. I have a large subset of friends that do nothing but tell me how weak WoW is and how great their MMO is. Yet I am still playing WoW after five years and they have gone from one game to the next. I do try just about every MMO when it comes out and have to admit that Collector's Editions make me blow money like a fool. I early adopted AION just for the sweet action figure and in-game stuff only to discover I was not a big fan of pretty anime korean style gaming. Go figure.
My point is that you need to try this for yourself. If you see a review at either extreme and you do not already have an opinion about Cryptic games, just skip it. The author has already made up his/her mind and there is nothing you can do except try the game and review it on its merits. Had I listened to reviewers I would have never had the joy of grinding out Argent rep pre-BC or the misfortune of running MC over and over and over again.
Try the beta if you can, play for a month if you want. I like the beta and I like non-paper doll aspect after so many years of being tied to gear (and especially after reading "pst achiev/stats/gearscore" on WoW ad nasuem.)
