Star Trek MMO goes more

Things have looked good for the future of Star Trek Online since the announcement of Perpetual Entertainment's "shift in focus" and cancellation of the Gods and Heroes project. It seems according to some recent news that Perpetual has actually been acquired by a media company looking to use STO to propel itself into the gaming market. If I had a goatee, I would surely stroke it at this point and contemplate the carnival of possibilities ahead for the future of the title.

However, the biggest news here is that Star Trek Online is reported to be going in a different direction, favoring a "casual" approach rather than a hardcore one. It's been suggested that subscription fees may not apply, perhaps going with the charge-for-content approach instead, but there has been no firm confirmation on such an approach so far.

Here's another interesting tidbit from an inside source: A recent ad on Craiglist's San Francisco job postings is seeking an assistant producer with "strong Korean & English language skills to interface with Korean game development partners." So now Korea will be involved? In what way?

What does this mean for fans that have patiently awaited a frolic with Tribbles in a online universe? It's hard to say for sure, but it's safe to say Perpetual has been on shaky footing the last few months. I've had the pleasure of seeing the conceptual work for STO firsthand during my visit to the studios during GDC, and I'm still hopeful to see the project reach the heights it aims for, despite the recent changes. What do you think -- Still promising?

Unless it's got something other than Star Trek to differentiate it from the already available sea of MMO's, I foresee a mediocre future.

I was never a fan of Star Trek, so hearing how the MMO is going to be all kekeke ^____^ and smiles, turns me off even more.

I'd completely forgotten the project even existed.

If tribbles aren't included as playable characters, I prophesize riots in the streets, acid rains, and all seven plagues occurring simultaneously.

It's actually going to be a Tribble stacking game. How many can you fit in the cargo hold?

I hope this is better than that shitty excuse for a movie coming out soon.

Meh, there's still hope. Of course, there's not a ton to go around, to begin with. I'm still holding out for good Star Wars and Trek MMOs, as well as the upcoming Stargate one.

"So now Korea will be involved? In what way?"

Korean studios have a TON of experience with MMO client/server architecture programming. When a studio is working on an MMO, and having network problems, the natural people to call are Korean devs. They probably arent outsourcing the whole game to Korea to turn it into a grindfest, they are just turning to more knowledgeable developers when they need a hand.

Wow, this is... meh. I mean, it wasn't even a huge thing in the beginning, but now, it's kind of a turn-off (now that we're reminded of the project, anyway).

But the Trekkies/Trekkers will all pick it up anyway to play in between cons. Whee. :/

I will of course be able to get gach as an edible item in this game, right?

Well, it's Star Trek, so that piqued my interest more than most MMOs do, but then, it's still an MMO, and that overrides the Star Trek-ness of it, at least for me. So, don't really care what they do with it, personally, though I guess it would be better that they not cock it up for those who do like that sort of thing.

If they include the Dominion in some playable way, I'm sold.

It was origionally going to be playable as the Federation and several different species. But later expansions would allow you to then expand into the Klingon Empire, Romulan, etc.

Maybe the next company will do a good job of this. Some of the best MMO's are created by nobody's.
