Star Ocean: The Last Hope gets a 360 Collector's Edition photo

You know that dirty trick game companies sometimes pull where they put out a game, and then a few months later they announce some collector's edition or enhanced version with extra stuff you didn't get in the copy you bought at release date? Well, Square-Enix just announced that Star Ocean: The Last Hope will be getting that exact treatment, and I have a feeling that hardcore Star Ocean fans are going to grumble but buy it anyway.

Here's what you get with the Collector's Edition, which is for Xbox 360:

  • Limited edition Star Ocean: The Last Hope Box: Unique 'digistack' packaging with dual gatefold, inside a special collector's sleeve.

  • Star Ocean Soundtrack Compilation CD:
The Star Ocean Sound Best Collection showcases key themes from across the series specially chosen by the game creators and series fans.
  • Five Star Ocean: The Last Hope Character Cards: Collectable prints of lead characters from the game, using rare artwork not officially released in Europe and other PAL countries.

  • Brady Games Official Miniguide: 32 page game guide printed in full-colour, with extra character artwork, descriptions and walkthrough information - to help you on your journey through the universe.
  • Three Star Ocean: The Last Hope Game Discs
Expansive galactic adventuring goes across three game discs, accompanied by full-colour play manual.

This edition is due out on June 5th, but pricing details are not available yet. Hey Square, this is nifty, but couldn't you have released it, oh I dunno, when the game launched?

that's odd that they do this AFTER the game initially came out

that's a shitty "special edition" if you ask me.

And in another six months or so the directors cut version will come out.

Judging by the language in that post, I'm reeeeelatively certain this is just for the EU release, where the game hasn't even come out yet.

People bought Star Ocean in the first place?

Who would play that piece of shit?

^It's not a bad game. Actually the combat is a lot of fun. Unfortunately, pretty much everything else about it is terrible. Still worth picking if you enjoyed the combat of SO3. But I know you're just trolling.

@Woland I beat it last night.

The game's main flaw is the crappy voice acting. The fighting system is very much like all the other Star Ocean games.

This is a horrible special edition though.

Looks like a decent collection, anyone knows the price on it?

This is fucked up. Way to reward your fans who bought the game in the first few days. Ya know, the hardcore fans who give you the most money.

I'm so tired of Square. They disgust me almost as much as Activision.

Honestly, I gave up on any collectibles / CE games, short of a Blizzard game. This Star Ocean is a good game, but hardly worth drooling over extra

If this is to tie with an EU release date, that makes a bit more sense, but remains unjustified for any extra money for the extras, IMO.

What a boneheaded move. You sell the Collector's Edition when the game comes out, not AFTER. Now only the most hardcore of people or collector folks will pick up the Collector's Edition very grudgingly.

And Eva shows up in 3, 2, 1...

Since I didn't buy it the first time, I might be more inclined to get this, but SO4 is already cheap used, so I dunno...

lololol @ all the comments.

Anyways, NinhonTiger90, I'm amused you thought about me right away LOL. Yeah, I'll be getting this because I'm a loser who likes CE and collecting, hence having 2 copies of ToV (regular and CE). But seriously, after the game has been released? Bad move.

I don't know what all this ruckus is about, these are the details for the european collector edition, the release date matches perfectly.

I think this might just be for the European release: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Ocean-Last-Limited-Collectors/dp/B00284ANW6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1243452232&sr=8-2

Also June 5th is a Friday, I thought games were usually released on Tuesdays in the US.

Even though I already have it, I will sadly still go out and buy it. Damn this obsessive compulsion for collector's editions!! (Thankfully I only have it for games and not movies)

I think this is just for us in Europe isn't it, since the game is released when the collectors edition is released?

Why in god's name would they make a collector's edition of this game!? I'm playing it now, and I can't force myself to finish it. The cast is just so god damn irritating and unlikeable. I want nothing more than the game to end and the cast to be destroyed by a nova star or something.

gameplay- same awesome star ocean gameplay that is so unique to this series.
voice acting/story- The story and the general character interaction are the worst I have played in any game. Maybe it's because im old but i remember enjoying star ocean: The second story as one of the best RPG's that i had ever played. I almost feel like the move to voice acting has taken away from my enjoyment of RPG's with the exception of lost odyssey. Well this rant has gone on long enough.

Damm you Tri-Ace( i hold my fists up to the sky and curse their name)

This sort of makes me pissed. I would have bought a CE in a heart beat if it came here.

Oh well. Hopefully this will stir sales for SO4 across the pond.

/sigh

Glad I rented this tripe in the first place anyways.

Things wrong with this game.

A lead character who doesn't look nearly as badass as his CG form. They look like two completely different people.

One dimensional characters.

They ruined the Private Action system and everything it stood for. Lazy move.

The best characters join at the end of the game.

And most of all:

This game would have been 100 times better if Crowe was the protagonist. He was much cooler, had double light sabers, was sexier, stronger, and had a more overall badass role in the story.

I beat the game and it was bearable at times, but over all I have lost complete faith in the SO franchise. The Second Story was so amazing it hurts to see it turn into this tripe.

Sorry for you people who thought I was such a huge fan of the series to the point of blindness but can't live in denial. I am with Nanbu on this one.

Even with SO3's flaws it was a way better game because it had annoying child characters that I could avoid having in my party. It had way better voice acting and a protagonist that was actually a competent, intelligent individual. Not just some goody two shoes grunt with a sword.

Edge: Horrible voice acting and annoying character.
Reimi: Good voice acting yet boring character.
Faize: Good voice acting but fails for multiple spoiler reasons
Lymle: A character that could have been so much more yet never pushed through into anything but a one dimensional monotone character.
Bacchus: Alright character.
Meracle: Annoying cat girl.
Sarah: Oh good god damn. Worst character in the franchise.
Myuria: Awesome character with great voice acting, cool demeanor and over all hotness.
Arumat: Same as Myuria. Needed more development but he was the last guy you get at the end of the fucking game.

Welch: I LOVE HER. SHE MADE THE FUCKING GAME! THE ONLY REASON TO PLAY THIS GAME.

If this game only had a party that consisted of Crowe, Myuria, Arumat, Welch and maybe Lymle and Bacchus this game would be excellent.

This game wasn't bad aside from the terrible voice acting. "KAY!" This is a weak collectors edition! Not only is it being relased way too late the content sucks... Best collectors editions ever were the Lunar remakes!
