At last month's Tokyo Game Show, I got my hands on Square-Enix's Star Ocean: First Departure for the PSP. I wanted nothing more than to show you how wonderful the game looked, but Squeenix had me on camera lock down, and they only supplied me with a couple of craptastic screenshots. The day has been saved by both Gametrailers and Jeux-France, giving us both video and screenshots of the upcoming RPG.

The above trailer is little more than a Japanese teaser, but it does give you some idea of the quality of the cutscenes I talked about earlier. The low quality of the video does not do the real thing justice.

Jeux-France has got the real goods with a gallery of forty high-quality images from the game. Screenshots of the above-mentioned cutscenes, along with several battle and overworld/map pictures should make any JRPG fan's day.

Hit the jump for a few highlights.

Those that hate anime may not dig this game.

The pre-rendered backgrounds look great.

[thanks to JV and Gametrailers]

Looks great! Hopefully it will transcend the mediocrity plaguing most PSP RPGs.

For the first time since I sold it over a year ago, I'm starting to miss my PSP.

I wish RPGs had fully 2D anime battles.

To nilcam--

That would be awesome. Especially with decapitations.

Wow, nice anime shots. In my mind, animation always beats CG cutscenes.

I never did like the star ocean games, the story lines were always kind a weak sauce -_- specially the last one.

I'm actually unhappy with the new artwork style for the characters here, because they're using the same artist for SO2 as well, and they made Rena look like a 12 year old... D:
