Star Ocean and Nier Replicant confirmed for PS3 photo

Star Ocean: The Last Hope has been confirmed for PS3, coming to Blu-ray after a year of Xbox 360 exclusivity. The latest in tri-Ace's sci-fi RPG series will release in Japan on February 4, 2010. Also confirmed for PS3 is Nier Replicant, a new version of Square Enix's upcoming action game, which is PS3 exclusive. It's possible that, as we theorized, Nier Gestalt will be an alternate Xbox 360 version.

The version of Star Ocean released on PS3 will be Star Ocean: The Last Hope International. It features both a Japanese and English voice track, as well as controls specifically designed for Western audiences. with battle additions such as auto targeting.

This is big news for PS3-loving weeaboos!

That's nice to hear. I need more JRPGs on my PS3. Sucks about the death of exclusives though.

@flabzilla: Bad choice. I think you meant to say FF9 though, so I'll let it slide.

I cannot read "Edge Maverick" without thinking of the MST3K episode of 'Space Mutiny'.

"Slab Bulkhead, Fridge Largemeat, Flint Ironstag, Bolt van der Huge, Thick McRunfast, Stump Beefknob, Crud Bonemeal, Crunch Buttsteak, Blast Hardcheese, Dirk Hardpeck, Slate Slabrock, Gristle McThornbody, Lump Beefbroth, Big McLargeHuge, Buff Drinklots, Smoke Manmuscle, Punch Rockgroin, and Roll Fizzlebeef"

THANKS SQUARE/TRI-ACE.

Exactly what I wanted on the 360 version too. Too bad the game is a mediocre fetch quest.

How can you be called "Edge Maverick" and still look like a perfume model?

A JRPG hitting a Japanese console. WHAT A SURPRISE!
Seriously though we saw this coming. Now what extra stuff are we getting?

I was surprised by how much Collete liked this game. I thought it was rubbish. Only slightly better than Infinite Undiscovery.

While I'm happy the ps3 fans will get to play it (as its a really fun rpg imo) wtf is the need for auto-targeting and "western" controls in a JRPG?

And captin bus has won this thread.

I got this game for $20 (KMart Clearance is the best place to buy game ever), and only played about an hour of it. Got to the first world, skipped 90% of the cutscenes (the voice acting makes me want to shoot myself), haven't touched it yet. I might go back to it someday, but I seriously had more fun playing the Penny Arcade RPG games then this mess. Maybe JRPGs have just lost their hold on me...
Wait, they can't yet! Not until AFTER FFXIII! NOooooOooo...
Also, Tri-Ace is getting worse, I swear. After Infinite Undiscovery and now this mediocre Star Ocean, I expect very little from this company.

what do you mean by "western controls" if your referring to the real time battle system, that's been going on since 1995 thanks to Tales of Phantasia.

Unless the PS3 version improves the spotty story and the extremely scaled back Private Actions, the only thing to look forward to is a decent battle system.

It saddens me that I can't be more positive about SO4 since I've enjoyed the SO series pretty much up to this point. It falls into the category of an older series striving into the next-gen market, it's all flash and style with very little substance that made the series fun to begin with.

JRPG on 360 = fail. i don't know why they keep trying it. odds are if you bought a 360, you did not buy it to play RPGs.

Actually, there's a bit more news about Star Ocean 4 International: it also includes multiple languages in the menus (inc. English), as well as multi-language subtitles (also inc. English). In short, this is the most import-friendly "International" JRPG release ever.

Too bad SO4 got abysmal reviews the first time 'round.

Hopefully SO4 has absolutely nothing new aside from the voices. Mostly because it doesn't need anything new. It's still new to all of those PS3 users and as such, really doesn't need anything extra for incentive to play it. If they wanted to play it as it was, they'll still want to play it now.

I'm really sick of either system getting exclusive extra stuff.

More RPGs on more consoles? Nice. SO4 probably will be out on PS3 by the time I decide to get it, but it will be cheaper on 360 so that's where my money goes.

Damn it, this is not a good generation to be an RPG fan. I wanted a PS3 for a while, but caved and bought a 360 simply because it had all of the JRPG exlcusives, like ToV / SO4 / Lost Odyssey / Blue Dragon. Now half of those exclusives have been not only been ported, but ported with significant improvements. I can only selfishly hope Mistwalker doesn't do the same. I mean, I'm happy that more people get to play these good games (not sure if SO4 can be considered that), but still, it's not been easy to have my rationale for spending $300 on a 360 get destroyed.

I guess I'll start praying for a 360-version of FF Versus XIII...although right now, that game looks like nothing but emo-brooding, belt buckles, and zippers.

Every PS3 owner, please do yourself a favor and skip Star Ocean 4. It had good gameplay, but no amount of fun in battles could save this game from its absolutely horrid, irritating cast and inane story. About 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through the game, I just stopped because I couldn't take the horrible dialogue anymore.

Stewie sums up the time I spent with SO4's characters the best:

Every day it seems more and more like I'm the only person who actually thoroughly enjoyed this game. Yes, the cast. Yes, the story, too. I enjoyed pretty much every aspect of it.

Was it the greatest RPG of all time? Not by any stretch of the imagination, but it certainly wasn't one of the worst, either.

And in this version we get the ability to skip cutscenes by pressing the triangle button, so PS3 owners can skip bad the dialog.

@ Mummified Circuitry: Oh trust me, you're not the only person who enjoyed this game. I loved it a lot. Then again, I'm not a picky ass gamer who is going to whine about it not being like "old RPGs." I rather appreciate some new shit than whine about how things aren't like "old RPGs" these days. Plus, SO4 was better than SO3 so that made me happy.

Microsoft publishes their games on consoles. No chance of a PS3 Lost Odyssey.

The latest Star Ocean was so bad, I literally hated it enough to want to smash it. The voice acting was the worst, the characters in the game were so unlikeable that I wanted them to die, the cutscenes were just so awful that I found myself skipping them. I am still angry at myself for trying so hard to like it that I wasted probably 20 hours on it.

I'm glad this isn't full of "Xbox is FPS system anyway" like on Joystiq. I actually bought an Xbox to play FF13, Eternal Sonata, and Lost Odyssey. The fact it had Gears 2 on it was a nice bonus.
The point being, the Xbox 360 has been THE machine for JRPGs this generation. Too bad most of them have been absolute rubbish (the ones mentioned above the only ones worth taking a second look at). I'm glad to see lots move to the PS3, even if it is sucky Star Ocean.
