Standalone version of NFL Head Coach 09 to be released after all photo

Here’s some good news for the few of you who actually wanted to put your football coaching skills to the test without springing for the 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of Madden NFL 09. Contrary to all information that we had hitherto heard, it turns out that EA will now be putting out NFL Head Coach 09 by itself. According to Peter Moore (and EA’s official news post on the game’s Web site), this was a direct result of fan feedback — nicely done, guys!

Unfortunately for football strategists looking to pick up the game, the standalone version won’t be out until three weeks after its release in the 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition on August 12th. Look for NFL Head Coach 09 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to hit store shelves on September 2nd, the day after Labor Day, for $49.99. Yeah, I also think the price point is about ten bucks too high, but what are you going to do? It’s EA.

Ooooo . . . that is a bit high. For that price, I kinda feel like I'd sooner just go ahead and get my Priced Madden on and get the Head Coach as a "added bonus".

But then again, I imagine the return rate of Head Coach to be generally high, since it isn't for everybody and not everyone gets that. I for see a used discount sometime in September.

I don't have a problem with the guns in Bad Company. I think the method of getting the extra guns is fair (a little marketing thing or wait a few weeks/months). Fine. But games like this is why I hate EA. Not only do they release the same game every year, now they're taking features from said game and turning it into a full game? Really? I understand the re-releasing of Madden football every year (or at least before the internet on consoles), but really...a feature to a full game. No. I hate you EA.

@Stetsonblade: That’s not really what NFL Head Coach is about. I’m not justifying the high price tag, but while Madden has a franchise and owner mode, it doesn’t have anything resembling a coach mode. In this game, your on-the-field duties consist only of calling the plays and seeing how it all turns out. But there’s a lot more to being a football coach, as I’m sure you realize, and there’s accordingly a lot more to this game. I’m not saying that I’d buy it, because I’m not a football strategy guy. But I think you’re misunderstanding what this game comprises.

I wish there was a game solely dedicated to owner mode. I'm always so disappointed at stadium creation options.

Hell, where's my EA Stadium Designer 09?

@Samit
I think what he means is it used to, and because of that, I hate EA. EA ruins everything they get and even though they put out some short OK games sometimes, they have really taken the gaming industry down a few notches. No bang for your buck with their games; rehashed same games; even the new BF3 is going to just be a remake of BF2 with "better graphics". The Sims and all their glorious expansions. EA knows how to make money and it's to market towards morons.

You know Samit, I don't understand why they think after the abysmal failure of Head Coach for the Xbox, that a new Head Coach is going to be successful on the 360.

Just give me NCCAA 09 please and make it snappy.

Head Coach 1 was a good idea plagued with a shit system. The load times were god awful, the time management system was way too rigid, and the flow of the game sometimes just didn't make sense. Not to mention, for me, it froze up sometimes on those loading screens. It was a hot mess and I soon lost intereste because of all the tedium and minutia, coupled with the horrible load times for everything.

My hope is that they saw that, aside from concept, there were a lot of implementation issues in the first run and are looking to correct that and give the series another try.

@BigPopa
My guess is that they see Football Manager games doing well in Europe along with the fact that so many people still get into fantasy football each year. I imagine they're trying to tap into and grow that market, considering they're piggy backing this with the collectors edition. Old heads/long time fans and big current fans will be all over the collector's edition. If they ever put Madden down long enough to actually try out headcoach, the hope is that they'll find some merit in it.

Though admittedly strange it is that it taps into the very same game/time pool that would likely spend hours playing through seasons of Madden. Come to think of it, this might be a great game to really push on the Wii. It requires far less dexterity than Madden, and might fit well with the alleged "casual" demographic . . .

Can we get Holmgren on the cover for 2010 to keep the play it safe theme going?

The first game was awful and this is coming from a big time football guy. There was no strategy involved in this game it was just repetition. If you just practiced the same players and same play over and over again you could get the guy up into the 90s and just kill everyone. I won the freaking Super Bowl with Jets and went 14-2. If you want a real coaching sim check out Front Office Football on the PC. Soooo much better than this crap.
