You may have seen the big reveal of SSX: Deadly Descents on the VGAs last night and thought to yourself, "That video was cool, but I wish I had at least three screens and some sort of description of the game." Destructoid to the rescue! Below you will find three new screenshots from the newly launched official page.
That page also has a brief description of what the game is actually all about. In SSX: Deadly Descents, which is officially revamping the franchise, you'll join a team of snowboarders who attempt to tackle the largest and most dangerous mountains in the world. But remember this is an SSX game so "in SSX: Deadly Descents the first goal is to survive. The second, in true SSX fashion, is to look good doing it." It may kill you, but doing that triple backflip is really important.
P.S. Could they have made this look anymore like some Call of Duty game?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I still can't wait though, I can tell this is easily going to be a properly insane SSX.
Actually, the last one would be an improvement. Hm.
See, when a band covers a song, for it to be a good cover, what made the song great originally still has to be there OR PEOPLE WILL HATE YOU FOR TOUCHING IT. It needs to be about the song and not about the band.
Well, unless you were Johnny Cash. The Johnny Cash of video games is pretty much Retro Studios at this point. They can take your old, beloved game and make it better than it was. To the point where the original creator's take looks like shit, really.
Nut not everyone can be Retro Studios or Johnny Cssh, so sometimes its just better to stick the the script and keep the fans in mind instead. You know, rather than be so Uwe Boll about it and going your own way.
I didn't even notice that. A game about slaying your enemies with your high moral standards and sense of ethics would be nifty.
Also, that's a nice helicopter, but why is it one of the first images released from a snowboarding game?

Put me in the "yeah, fuck this noise" camp.
Because that's what this is, except with Tornado's on Mountains.
Which is why Uncharted 3 is getting such a baleful response, I suppose?
I guess why that same formula doesn't apply here.
I second your question for Destructoid to query EA on the fans reactions. SSX has been one of my favourite series and the last 2 (on tour and blur) were so dismal I had to get rehab. haha We need a good mix of tricky and 3 to sooth our pains.
People have a right to voice their opinions, especially fans of the classic franchise. I disagree on being lose-lose.
There's plenty of ways they could've innovated, improved, and expand the experience while still keeping the charm of the original series. The "gritty" CoD genre, much like 3D in films, is becoming a careless cash-in option that even stained the likes of Goldeneye on the wii.
What they could've done was mix new boarders with old, expand the trick system, create wild new tracks to shred, allow online competitions, maybe even add a create your own boarder option as well. There was so much that could've been done to keep the charm and thrills of the classic franchise, but instead EA decided to hop on a bandwagon that seems to kill many games that are not from the source material.
Note to developers: Innovation does not mean darker color palettes.
I completely disagree with you. Hell, they could have announced that they're creating HD ports of SSX 3 and SSX Tricky and sticking them one disc and people would have been overjoyed. If they'd gone the obvious route and made a new SSX game that was just bigger and badder, with new songs and crazier jumps, it would have been a huge success. I know I'd have a preorder down the moment it became available.
You'll also note the backlash against Resident Evil being "updated" to feature moving-and-shooting, the complaints about the recent Silent Hill games moving to a more western and action-orientated feel, complaints about recent FFs lacking open worlds ala older games, etc. When people like a series it is because they like what that series has to offer and they want more of it. Nobody asks "please sir, can I have some more?" while secretly hoping they get given something different.
People like SSX. The people who like SSX want more SSX. This clearly is not going to be like the other SSX titles. People who like SSX don't want that. Perhaps there are other people who previously did not like SSX who do want this, but existing fans evidently don't. No, not everyone cries for "innovation" at the drop of a hat.
I actually enjoyed dark summit, call me weird haha, dont know why but it was quite fun.
@Pumpkin King
EA BIG have been absorbed into EA, they arent a independent developer anymore. I remember finding it out a while back because I was curious myself as to what happened to them. So who knows if any of the key SSX dev team still work at EA?
Only this game can tell us.
Yall see Call of Duty. Good on you.
I see SSX 3, but just the bare mountains and (even more) insane weather. I don't even need impossible to preform tricks or bumping tracks (though the tracks part would be icing on the cake). The fact that they're keeping a weather system from SSX 3 is enough to solidify a purchase for me.
The only thing that's been confirmed real are mountain locations. As far as I'm concerned, nobody in their right or wrong mind would board down these mountains in the conditions EA Canada is presenting them in the first place, so you can throw that realism shit out the window.
So here's the potential of what we have; Out run an avalanche in hurricane force winds at break neck speeds on top of a 20,000 ft. mountain, just because you want to prove you can, while doing insane shit in the form of tricks because you can?
Fuck, they could put Alex Mason as the main character in the game, give him a gun, and fill the mountain with VietCong, and I'd still buy 2 copies.
Maybe it's because I actually enjoyed xXx, but hey.
That said, I will admit the aspects of wingsuits like that being thrown into the mix excites me. If it's a fairly open course like SSX3,I like the thought of jumping off a giant jump, and at the apex deploying the wingsuit and sailing to a different route down the mountain. It seems like a pretty amazing idea to me.
If they can improve on the gameplay (not just turn the controls into Skate), I'm fine (yet sad) looking past the art direction.
100% fucking agree, all of us posting here gonna end buying a copy of the game, the ''The second, in true SSX fashion, is to look good doing it'' description part give me hope, don't see it? F-A-S-H-I-O-N''.
hahahah the alex mason quote get me lmao hahah
Like I said this just needs to be called Deadly Descents, take out the SSX. It has nothing to do with that game. That way they can make a SSX that's like the originals, and still have this. Since if they release this and try to do a arcade like SSX that would just be confusing as all hell.
Just because the visuals are "realistic" doesn't mean the gameplay will be.
Now if someone says "this sucks" it's an absent argument. But if they say it sucks and break down why they think it will be a disappointment is called a rational argument.
Extreme weather conditions alone isn't enough to make me purchase the game. Neither is the "grittier" atmosphere/look.
I will wait and see, since I have a feeling the reception probably won't be as strong critically and sales wise.
Sometimes change can bite a game in the ass. Perfect example, again, Goldeneye on the Wii.
Sometimes keeping the same successful formula works (uncharted, ratchet and clank, zelda series all come to mind).
I would've liked to have seen them keep some of the old, add some new. Now completely overhaul the franchise and giving it a "darker" mood. Simply because there was no need for it to be a darker game.
On the other hand...WTF?!Seriously? Hope they don't spam grenades or use wall hacks, 'cause snowboarding games used to be fun, hope they still are and that there's no one to shoot at me while doing it.
