Squeenix president likes multiple consoles: Squeenix president is sensible photo

Lately it seems that developers have been expressing their longing for a single console to rule them all. Both Dennis Dyack and, more recently, David Jaffe, have supported the idea of a one-console industry, an idea that is both fanciful, unworkable and simply bad for the business. Luckily, Square-Enix president Yoichi Wada appears to have a good head on his shoulders, and has extolled the virtues of the multi-console industry we currently have:

"It was going to happen anyway, it wasn't accidental ... Videogames became popular in the 80s, and for about fifteen years, until the year 2000, the main focus was just on ensuring that everybody had a console. Now we have moved to a new era where we have more types of gamers and console users, and what is important for both hardware and software makers is how to deal with diversified demands from diversified users."

Unlike Jaffe and Dyack, Wada recognizes that human beings are a diverse race and that different consoles appeal to different people. Even machines like the PS3 and Xbox 360, while similar creations, appeal to differing consumers. While Wada admitted he, as a software developer, would like the convenience of a single format, he also conceded that it would be impossible to create.

That, really, is the only reason why anybody could support a single hardware platform -- convenience. It sure is easy to only have one console to buy, one console to develop for, and one console to purchase software for, but let's face it, the industry would become a far duller place, and a lack of choice is inevitably going to be bad for the consumer. Good on Wada, for being able to see the wood, not just the trees.

[Thanks, Aerox]

nice post.

i agree with jim, in the 'sense' that different consoles provide different experiences. for example, nintendo and microsoft both have different genres of gamers and games, which i beleive to be a good thing. if you want kiddie games for the most part, get a wii, if you want more mature games, get a 360, if you want a pile of shit that costs 800$ at first and takes years to build a decent game catalogue, get a ps triple.

of course its possible to make multi console games and all that, i just feel each console garners a different gamer and different styles for the games, which i beleive to be good.

If only he realized we only wanted one final fantasy and not 5 different versions of XIII

I've never seen buzzwords woven together in such a sensible way before.

I disagree! (with the exception of the DS and possibly the Wii). Having one console would be good for almost everyone.

It'd be bad for one company to have a monopoly on video games (consoles). What would be bad about having ONE (open) format?

Every console has its pros and cons when it comes to content, as much as I like my 360, its got far to may shooters, the Wii is a family machien mostly and the PS3 is trying to branch out in all directions, its just taken them a long time to get there.

I say go with what interests you the most, but I am glad for multi console games, I bought my GC for the RE games and I barely used it most of the time because it had so little going for it, an extra console helped those droughts.

Yoichi Wada knows what's up. Unified platforms lead to what turns into a poor product.

Of course competition is better for the industry. I just hate the fanboys who pop up from being unable to afford more than one console.

I think most people are missing the point. They want a unified platform not a single manufacturer. They want something like the DVD player market. Last time I checked there was plenty of competition in that particular area. I will admit that beyond that it does get a bit impractical with all the difference's that can crop up with memory and graphics that don't really come up in the DVD market.
