Square VP talks about new MMO, says some wholly unbelievable things photo

Those Square-Enix people say the craziest things. In a recent Fanfest report, Square Enix vice president and producer of Final Fantasy XI Hiromichi Tanaka and other members of the Square Enix development team had some interesting input about the impact of World of Warcraft on Final Fantasy XI's user base.

When asked about the topic, the team stated:

"Actually, we haven't been affected that much by WoW. When FFXI hit its peak users was about the time that WoW was released, and when it was released we didn't see a big reduction in the players. It's pretty much been about the same."

They added: "We feel that with a lot of MMORPGs on the market, players have the choice of the one they want to go to and they'll try them out and then they'll stick with one -- and we see that people who chose FFXI have stuck with it."

While these timelines are factually true, saying that your MMO wasn't affected by WoW is like saying it didn't hurt that much to get your cheeks scraped off with a cheese grater. Add in that legions of players quit playing Final Fantasy XI with the complaint that it was boring, and you have some definite issues there. Ah well, Japan will play it no matter what.

Square is unphased though, plugging away on a new MMO project. The big question: Will it be Final Fantasy or something new altogether? Per the horse's mouth:

As you might already know, members from the current FFXI team are working on a next generation MMO, but it still hasn't been decided whether that's going to be a game in the FF series, a continuation, or a totally new game. We are working on it, but it hasn't been decided that far yet.

There you have it, kids. Now go slay some murlocs or something.

"We are working on it, but it hasn't been decided that far yet."

WHAT? It must have gone down like this:

"Ok team, go start coding and designing a gorgeous Japanese-looking MMO where players can grind away five years of their lives. We'll let you know in a year or two if we need Chocobos in it or not..."

You're right! I do recall pulling something like him out of the ground in SMB2

FFXI exists to facilitate mithra fanservice art. This is it's purpose and it does it spectacularly.

As far as it being a quality game, I returned the $1.99 trial disc to GameStop. They wouldn't give me my money back, so I left it there.

FFXI is the definition of a tedious, boring as hell MMO. I played it for a month and could not stand it, I went straight back to WOW

I have a strange feeling that, aside from Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy, Squenix really doesn't have anywhere else to go. Looks like we get even more tall hair and large swords. Sigh.

As someone who played MMO's before WoW turned all of you into spineless pussy's.

i enjoyed FFXI and the feeling of accomplishment that came with every tedious outing.

Tedium should not be a part of the genre. Level Grinding should be necessary in an MMORPG, but it should have purpose and feeling in it. It should be fun, in general.

All MMORPGs are, by definition, boring and tedious grindathons. Why? Because they're sandbox games. There is no ultimate end to a sandbox title, so a feeling of accomplishment will never come. Have fun going through that same dungeon 50 times so you can get that ultrarare piece of armor that only has a 1% droprate!

Aren't they talking about Concerto Gate? I coulda swore they were working on that, with Kenji Ito and Hiroki Kikuta doing music. Anyway, I attended the Fan Fest, and it was actually really neat how the developer's took questions from fans and offered to change things in the game to answer the concerns of their players.

I've created this account for the sole reason of calling you, Colette Bennett, a complete and utter moron/noob.
I'm not sure if you should feel honored, or if you should go out and actually try playing an MMO.

Having played many, many, mmos in my day I can say that FFXI was probably the best one that I came across. Personally I thought that WoW somehow found a way to be boring while giving the players everything with in 2 months time. Which, oddly enough, is longer than my WoW subscription lasted. For now I'm completely done with MMOs. I don't really feel the need to pay someone to waste my freetime now that I have a job and freetime actually has some bit of value attached to it.

FFXI still has the best combat synergy between classes in any MMO. Having recently retired from 3 years of WoW, if FFXI's devs took a bit of the grind out, they'd still have one of the most engaging MMO's on the market.
