Square's DS horror offering, Na Nashi no Geemu (Game with No Name), made waves in my consciousness a few months back when some screenshots were spied in Famitsu. Now that the title is nearing its Japanese release date (July 3rd) more information is hitting the net, including a new trailer and the appearance of the official website.

While the website is every bit as scary as I hoped for it to be and shows in-game exploration holding the DS like a book, the trailer itself actually shows the "game within a game" that you play as part of the storyline, which draws a sharp contrast to the spooky atmosphere with a sudden dose of Dragon Warrior-style graphics and music. Wha?

I still love the concept here, it's just that the jump from one atmosphere to another was a bit unexpected. After I regained my sense of balance and absorbed it all for a few minutes, I realized I wanted the damn game more than ever. I don't think there's even a question of something like this coming to the US, it's about as likely to rain cows. That's a sad thing, because I honestly don't think there is a single game I wish I could play (and understand) more than this one right about now. Sigh.

[Thanks, Adam!]

Thanks, I'd been waiting to hear more about it. It looks like it will really work at enveloping the player in more ways than one. I want it so baaaaad!!! *cries*

This is the kinda thing that they need to do more in games.
The first game I played with such weird surprises was the first Metal Gear Solid game.

Not sure where that title came from, but the correct title is Na Nashi no Geemu.
Looks like someone read it in the wrong direction and can't tell the difference between shi and tsu in katakana.

@Zerozaki Ishiki - I feared that. I've seen multiple names for it all over the net. Thank you, I will edit it to reflect the correct name.

Whoa... that looks VERY intriguing. I want to know more, but heres to hoping they keep a lid on it so tight that no one will know what it is until release. Blair Witch like hype would be an awesome twist to what looks like a reality within a game within a game.

wow that's really intriguing. It seems that the 8-bit game in the story is actually a cursed game. Whoever plays it will be dead in a given time frame and the player is to explore the mystery to simply survive... This is actually really typical Japanese horror plot, but the way its implemented in a game it's pretty special.

So let me get this straight this is a dementium type horror game for the ds where the central theme of the story is based on a (presumably) cursed 8-bit rpg?...........Um...............DO FUCKING WANT.

Haunted by Dragon Warrior?

*confused* Someone wanna give a summery of the Japanese text onscreen in the trailer?

I wouldn't be surprised if it DID come overseas.

Square's been pretty kind with the porting of late(and actually got good voice actors, lately, though Konami still rules all in that regard) and this probably isn't that hard a game to port(lots of text, yes, but unless lots of the puzzles/gameplay revolves around Kanji...)

Also, Square knows this stuff sells in North America. Silent Hill shows that much.

That trailer gave me a very David Lynchian vibe, with it's very quick transitions between styles and oddly creepy music. I like the game's overall weird style as opposed to just plain horror.

At the same time very awesome but very discouraging as well. I wish they would realize that there are many of us who thirst for this kind of... immersion and weirdness. We're not all CASUAL GAMERS and FRATBOYS over here.

I love that they added the graphical glitches to the 8-bit portion. That was a nice touch.

I need that game. I mean, come on, you're playing another game in it that, I really hope, parallels what's going on in the actual game.

It's just like The Black Freighter in Watchmen.

Here's some plot info from wikipedia.
The plot shown so far is about a cursed RPG game. If anyone plays this game, they then are found dead. An image of a girl near a window of some sorts might hint who's responsible for the deaths.
