Square Enix: We take too long to make games photo

It seems like we've been waiting for ten thousand years for Square Enix to finally release Final Fantasy XIII, and Square Enix itself won't deny that some of its games take forever to come out. In fact, company boss man Yoichi Wada has admitted as much, confessing that the publisher does indeed take too long with its titles.

Wada was asked if we could trust notoriously sub-par Eidos titles, now that the Tomb Raider and Kane & Lynch publisher had been bought by Square Enix. Wada said that they certainly hope to improve the quality of Eidos titles, but that it's hard to make sure games are finished while releasing them on time.

"Yes -- that's what I hope to achieve for the entire group," he said. "But we at Square Enix also have a problem -- it takes too long for us to produce a game...

"In reality I think the issues we have are basically the same. On one side you might say that because of the budgetary constraints they released the games without having the games polished to perfection, but on the other side we take too long to release the game.

"So we have the same issue in the management and control of the process isn't strict enough. Even though we're producing entertainment products we need to have the right production process in place -- and that is something that I'd like to implement across the entire business in our group."

I hope that Eidos learns from Square and not nice versa. While I think Square announces games too soon and then makes us wait years before we see anything of them, I'd rather deal with that than have Square Enix adopt Eidos' business practices.

They could always use "Enhanced Management Techniques".

I don't care how long they take. XIII could take another 5 years for all I care, just as long as its epic and stuff. Godfather II got another quarter of work time and it still ended up like... well, yeah. and before you say something, no, duke nukem forever won't be good, because 3DRealms are just a bunch of lazy asses that won't deliver. (he he he)

I'd prefer to wait for the game as long as its quality is assured(perfection can't be rushed). Its just that when it comes to quality square hasn't been so hot recently and its starting to seem as if the waits aren't worth it (a lot of people on the ps3 wanted squares stuff for a while but these days nobody really seems to care, only because they're taking to long, and the reviews haven't been so hot).

And announcing your game 4 years before its ready (and then delaying it)probably isn't a good idea either.

SQUENIX games should never be announced until a month before release.

I'd rather wait for a great game rather then having crappy games coming out all the time.

Traditional Japanese RPGs simply take more development time. In most cases, the very best roleplaying games are released closer to the end of a systems lifetime. In the case of Final Fantasy, they seem to want to pack a ridiculous amount of content in them (which will line the pockets of the Game Guide publishers. There's just no way to complete everything without one; unless your psychic-ability told you not to open 4 specific treasure chests in order to receive an ultimate weapon (FFXII). Recent SquareEnix efforts have been all over the map. Infinite Undiscovery I'd give a C (totally worth 10 bucks at Best Buy right now), Last Remnant was better (especially on the PC, go figure; but I'm having a blast with Star Ocean 4.

They should wait to announce games until they have a better idea on when it will be released. Now where is my Chrono-sequel and HD console Dragon Quest!

Yeah, I'd rather wait years for a good game than months for a rehash of something I've already played to death.

I'd like a little insight as to the Japanese game development process. There's what seems little oversight and little concern as to street dates. Check out the loose timelines placed on Polyphony for Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo is rapidly being outpaced by Forza, Project Gotham, and Burnout simply because no one turns the screws on Polyphony to turnout a finished product. Will it be better than Gotham or Forza? Doubtful, but then, it's PS3 exclusive, so it's kinda irrelevant.

When you do something, the aim is to do it:

Fast
Cheap
Right

But you only get to pick two.

Hey look, (cgi) ass.

But yeah, Square should just stop announcing their games so early. It's more just tiresome than anything else when they announce a game, show one piece of concept art and a couple of screenshots saying it's nearly finished, then three years down the line we finally get the title.
It's doubly annoying because of course the games still sell fantastically so there's no pressure on Square to up their game and speed up.

My thoughts exactly Jim. And at least Square recognizes that they take too long on games, and jump the gun on when they announce titles only to back down on their anticipated release date to make a quality product and not rush it.

Square Enix takes too long to make games? How many Final Fantasy side games have they released on the DS and PSP over the last year? Quite a lot actually. I think they're referring to the MAIN Final Fantasy games which takes a long time to make. 6 years to make a game seems a long time. You'd expect they were making some super MMORPG game or something with that time frame.
