Square Enix: We don't separate East and West markets photo

There has been a lot of talk lately about Japanese studios "going West" and "appealing to Western gamers" as the Japanese market allegedly sinks into decline. While chatting with Square Enix about The Crystal Bearers, we took the opportunity to ask game producer Akitoshi Kawazu what he made of the whole "go West" movement.

"The presence of Japanese games is not as strong within the international market these days, and as a business that creates and sells games, the reception in the Western market is naturally a point of interest to us," he explains. "However, when developing a game we do not separate our target audience into categories like 'Japanese' or 'Western.'

"We look more to player preferences, such as those who like higher difficulty levels, those who enjoy more of a collection element, those who look for more freedom in a game, those who like to have set objectives, and so forth. I do feel that one major difference in the Japanese and Western gamers’ preferences lies in the art style."

Do you think that Japanese and Western gamers can be easily distinguished, or do you believe that it's better to do as Square does and classify them by gameplay preferences? In any case, it's an interesting discussion to have as more and more Japanese studios look to Europe and North America in order to make a profit.

BULLSHIT. If changing the theme song of a game to a more "western" artist isn't separating the market, I don't know what is.

I agree, it's a bit of a contradiction.

Well Japanese are only prejudice against foreign companies so ya, they can do whatever they want.

However for a non-japanese company ya there's a difference, especially for anything MS exclusive. They really had those RPG betas.

If you don't it's only because you are remaking the same game over and over and over again

Ignoring non-Japanese customer feedback constitutes non-differentiated development?

m8s...i really dont care when they make a JRPG at its best. Without taking care of the Western gamer....but its shhht when they say they dont seperate. ofc they do, look at NieR. They made two versions...for what? i dont need a western version or smthng like that. But with they NieR they show that they seperate the market.with some unreleased games in NA / EU such words are pathetic.

I'd love to separate her markets. As in I would have sex with her if she was real.

I kinda wish they DID separate the markets, Japan should get the RPGS that disrespect your time and are 200+ hours long while we get the 40+ ones!

If and when I play FF13, I'd like to do so in Japanese w/ english subtitles. Does anyone know if it'll be possible on the US version? Since the PS3 launch I've been hearing 'oh, since it Bluray discs hold 50gigs, we can put all the languages for our game on it' and I have yet to actually see a company do it.

@SnatchTease, There have been games with multiple languages. For instance Demon Souls (Chinese Version) however, when they port a game to the US they figure they can only speak one language. So they only give it in one language. It doesn't even occur to them to put the original Japanese on the disc. Someone brought that up to Level 5, White Knight, and they had the look of wtf are you talking about on their face. They don't understand why we want it, when they spend a huge sum on getting English voices.

To your question I'm not sure about FF I heard it takes up 43-45gigs or something the Xbox360 takes up 30gigs. Not to sure what their cutting out for Xbox360. I doubt they could do that with just compression. However to the languages I'm honestly not sure how much space that takes up. I do know White Knight last I heard was "supposed" to do it.

Eh, when you treat American vs. Japanese player preferences as completely opposite... isn't it the same thing?

Didn't they come right out and admit that Last Remnant was developed primarily with Western audiences in mind? Hence the completely unnecessary addition of blood and mild language solely to earn the M rating?

@renegadepanda- The problem with The Last Remnant was that different parts of it were developed with completely different audiences in mind, and became something of a clusterfuck as a result. 38/40 at Famitsu, yet a 66/100 aggregate over Metacritic, coincidence? Ultimately, technical issues, as well as the "hardcore" (?) gaming features (repetitive battles, extraneous sidequesting with vague objectives) turned it into a game that appealed to relatively few people on either side of the ocean.

The thing should be how to respect both markets, not only in regards of americanization, because there is still the European market, and the latin market, is not about separate, it´s about mix in a good way, but Squeenix is still rushing in every other game that is not Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, so until they finish that issue over, we´ll stuck until they want.

In my mind Famitsu is a lot like GamePro, they are biased and paid off for their reviews. There is no other reason for anyone to give Godfather 2 a perfect score.

I like the Japanese style. Sometimes it makes you feel more cultured when you play a game with heavy region influence. The western style is becomming to much like the Hollywood style.

@SnatchTease, According to many, it is now. They realized advertising dollars were improved when they vote a certain way. Apparently this has been going on for the last few years. With recent years seeing more perfect scores then the rest of Famitsu's ENTIRE life time. So something is going on.

Only way to truly satisfy the western market is to satisfy both your fanboys and those outside the niche. Best way to do that is Dual Audio selections, keeping everything in tact before localization while adding the extra localization. Most games are subbed in their native(To the version released in whichever country) language regardless for the hearing impaired.

I think Final Fantasy appeals to stupid fangirls like myself...
I mean srsly...I rarely see a good video game these days that ACTUALLY focuses on relationships with other characters and characterization in general.
And for that I love Square Enix.

"What is a JRPG? A miserable little pile of secrets!"

I'd seriously like to see what kind of reviews FF13 would get if there weren't any numbers that show up on top of the enemy's head when you don't give him a good whack.

I just replayed FF4, and somehow found myself addicted in spite of the god-awful writing, laggy battles and atrocious encounter rates. It must've been those heroin-laced numbers. It's exciting when your character gets a new sword that finally breaks the 1000 mark.
