Square Enix teaser is for Final Fantasy Gaiden photo

Last week we talked about yet another teaser site, with Square Enix hinting at what some believed to be a new Romancing Saga. It would seem that Saga fans will be disappointed, but Final Fantasy fans will be elated at the news that a brand new game, Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden is on the way, and it's heading to the Nintendo DS.

As usual, the teaser site's contents were revealed before the site could officially make the announcement, with Weekly Jump magazine detailing Squeenix's brand new game. Gaiden tells the tale of a fourteen-year-old boy who is summoned by a king on his birthday to rescue a princess. Highly original stuff, right!?

The game allegedly takes the form of a menu-driven traditional RPG, in which MP has been replaced by a new "Charge" function. No idea what that means for now, but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough. Customization should also be part of the focus, with equipment changes having an effect on how your character looks. All RPGs should have this function, but barely any do, so that's good to know.

So, no new Saga news so far. Sad things for some. Still, we have another Final Fantasy game. We haven't had one of those for a few weeks.

rescue, not rescure

also, why does square enix insist on having the final fantasy name in so many titles they release nowadays? This could just as easily be Four Warriors of Light (or whatever other non final fantasy name they think of)? does having final fantasy in there really make that big of a difference at this point? i feel like the many nowhere-near-as-good-as-actual-final-fantasies-games-that-have-the-words-final-fantasy-in-them are really ruining the series' reputation...

They replaced MP with "Charge System"? I hope it's based on a cooldown system, where weak magic has short cooldown and stronger magic has longer cooldown. You know the powerup system in Gradius? Something like that.

Agreed. That's one of the reasons I love KOTOR so much,

Judging by the name alone, I'd say the 'Charge' system might be more like the magic system from the original FF1.

I really hope this is a new old-school style FF with a job system. I've been wanting one for years, ever since playing Tactics PS1 and Tactics Advance.

Wasn't SaGa or Seiken Densetsu originally called FF Gaiden though?

I think it was SD, Skadus, under the name Final Fantasy Legend (in the States, anyway). SaGa I'm not so sure about.

@thisissami: But but look at the sales of FF7Dirge of Cerberus! That game sold off of the Final Fantasy (7) title alone. :3

Radiata Stories is one RPG I've played in recent memory where both weapons and armor change depending on what you use. Of course, this only applies for the main character and the only person you can outfit, but hey, it was a nice thing to toss in there. =P

I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING A FULL 3D GARLAND

(I USE CAPS TO MAKE OBVIOUS THE FACT THAT THIS WILL PROBABLY BE THE BILLIONTH REMAKE OF THE ORIGINAL FINALY FANTASY)

@Doomsday Forte: Yeah, I remember Seiken Densetsu was FF Adventure (I remember having the Nintendo Power that had a preview for 'Legend of the Holy Sword', actually) and SaGa was FF Legend, but for some reason I thought I remembered learning the meaning of 'Gaiden' from one of the games in the FF series, like it was a working title or something. Maybe not. Doesn't really matter, anyway, I guess. ;)

@Avalon51: Actually, I was originally going to say that I was in the hopes that this was going to be a remake of FF1 with a full job system like 3/5/Tactics, but I figured that might be an unpopular thing to say for my first comment ever on DToid. ;)

WOWZARS! Square Enix is making a sequel to Final Fantasy I never saw that coming! Honestly I swear that now their just trying to keep making them so they can laugh at fact that it's called FINAL Fantasy.

@ Skadus

To clear this up, in Japan, Final Fantasy Adventure for Game Boy was called Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden. This was the first game in the Mana series and was eventually remade as Sword of Mana for GBA, though the Mana series would later drop the "Final Fantasy Gaiden" part of the branding.

I hear ya, Golden.

Sorry Square, but I'm drowning in FF. What Square don't seem to realise anymore, is that they are oversaturating their market. Each game has so much time needed to play them. With all these games Square are pushing, and FFXIII due soon, I have no time for every game.

Square must be OCD or something, since everytime I request they cut down on so much FF, they seem to be pushing more. I know there's a recession on, but this is all starting to feel a bit desperate. Too many games from one dev can backfire, since we do want to buy other product besides theirs.

I pass on this one for now.

@cowboy TTop,

"With all these games Square are pushing, and FFXIII due soon, "

Did you miss the part that said this is coming out for the NDS, not the PS3? There's more then one "market" to gaming.

Meh, as soon as I heard about that "4 Warriors of Light" title on the trademark list, I knew I would be disappointed.

In that sense, you haven't failed me Square.

*ignores my redundancy*
1) "SaGa" (except for "Unlimited Saga")
2) We've had a "Final Fantasy Gaiden": it began the Mana series.
3) "Charge" has been used to describe the original FFIs' and FFIII's magic system of so-many-casts-per-spell-level.
4) FFCC:MLaaD came out in Japan recently, if that counts for "a few weeks" (not for us, but whatevz).

@Run

The format is irrelevant, as its still FF.

Look at the list

FFXIII
FFXIII Agito
FFXIII Versus
DS games

There's too much FF, its that simple.

I think when you love something, you fear criticising it which is wrong, but some gamers think that way, like Square are gods and can do no wrong.

Like I've said many times before, Square have other jrpg series they can use. Saga and Bahamut are good, but we need to see more of the lesser known, and less of the FF cliche.

I'd rather see a new Vagrant Story, Live A Live etc.......than more fucking FF....AAAAARRGGGHHH!!!

Nope, not buying this one either, Square.

I may have a soft spot here. The only FF games that I enjoyed were the ones that featured the Light Warriors. So, eh, 1, 3 and 5. Awaiting further details.

Yeah this is so confusing. This game is called "Final Fantasy Gaiden". Yet Seiken Densetsu is also Final Fantasy Gaiden. Except over here, where it's Final Fantasy Legend or some shit. Blaugh, whatever. Haven't played any of them, aside from Secret of Mana (aka SD2). Oh wait, I played Legend of Mana on the PS1.

If this truly is a new game, that's one thing, but if it's just another remake, I'll probably pass like I have on all^H^H^Hmost of the other remakes. It doesn't sound like it's a remake of anything, but with Square-Enix these days you just can't be too sure.

Goddamnit S-E! Take a couple months and make my wishes come true:

-Remake one of the Romancing SaGas. I don't care which one, you have three to choose from... IN ENGLISH PLEASE!

-Can the guy in charge of the Mana games, and make a new one that doesn't suck. I've been thoroughly patient since Secret of Mana for a true successor to that series.

-Cool it with the FF blitz. This oversaturation is poisoning your product. Wu Tang did it. Billy Bass did it. Now you're falling down that same path.

-Get off your asses and bless this world with another Bushido Blade.

A FRESH NEW EXCITING IP WITH WILDLY IMAGINATIVE AND GROUNDBREAKING MECHANICS THAT TURNS THE RPG WORLD ON IT'S SIDE!?

Wow, I'm so glad Square decided to reach into it's massive throbbing sack of money and put the effort into--wait...what did you say Jim?

Well, fuck.

Hm, now that I've dipped into Joystiq's and Game|Life's postings, which actually point out that there's little yellow dots in place of any Magic command, the "Charge"s seem like they'd work similar to Xenosaga's system. In the XSs, you got two (or three?) AP (or whatever the term was) each turn to perform actions, and you could save these up up to six to pull off some single-turn c-c-c-combos (more like multiple attacks one after the other, but then you could have characters cut in the turn line and just unleash hell for a round). Dunno just how it'll work in here, though.

What I'd like to know is what they'll call it Stateside. We've had "Adventure" and "Legend", which seem to be the go-tos for localizing "Gaiden", "Side Story" sounds kinda heavy handed, "FF Fables" is taken by the CHocobo series, and just leaving it as "Gaiden" would prolly just make Englishers think of ninja actn (though, maybe there's sense there, given the Ninja class's recurrence in this series).
