Way back in 2007, we heard that Final Fantasy XIII wouldn't be out until 2009, and now that we're actually in 2009, Square says it'll be 2010. The long wait is nothing new for Final Fantasy fans, who are used to waiting several years between each of the major installments, but we all agree that Final Fantasy XIII looks hot. Like, really hot. Therefore, it makes the wait feel all the longer.
According to UK website Videogamer, it may be that the wait won't be as long as we thought. Producer Yoshinori Kitase spoke about the localization process, offering up some hopeful information for fans:
"Traditionally the Final Fantasy numbered series, it takes about half a year between the release in Japan and the release in North America, and another half a year before it's released in Europe. But we would like to minimize this, this time ... for example, we have already started recording English voices, and also the text localization has been in progress, too. Normally we complete the Japanese version first, then move on to the US and EU versions, but this time there are some tasks that are happening simultaneously. So this time we're hoping to release sooner than a year later [in Europe] than the Japanese release."
I'm not going to hold my breath, but at the same time it's nice to know that the localization is going differently than before (and that English voices are already being recorded!). The sooner the better, as we want to play it super bad. Also, then I can buy the official soundtrack instead of sitting on the Final Fantasy XIII homepage and listening to the music over and over like a total dweeb.

I thought all he wanted was Rukia's affection.
Oh well, I could be wrong.
That being said, I do want to get my hands on the game if only for the music.
Thats one thing that impressed me with at least the FMVs in Crisis Core, they actually went back and did that.
@Collette/Article
We do not all agree, I actually dont think FF13 looks that great ;_;
I know this because I've also been listening to it like a total dweeb.
@News: I'm really excited. I was worried that the US would have to wait a year or more due to Dev time on the 360 version (God damn day and date release). If this is in my hands by late '09/early 2010 I'll be a happy camper.
the english voices sounds weird and doesn't match with the mouth movements
I don't think it'll make much of a difference to me though whether it comes out before or after the new year because I'm definately waiting for reviews and renting it before I make a purchase.
@Brian Keljore: it wasn't her "affection" that he wants haw haw haw.
Thanks for rubbing it in that us Europeans won't be seeing FF-13 until at least early next year T_T
Seriously though, this is more than likely costing Square-Enix more money than the other traditional route, since rewrites, re-lipsyncs, re-recordings, and other such costly measures are taken to ensure a simultaneous release in multiple regions. Let's not even discuss the increased possibilities for lower quality control.
As an example of where this suggestion works is in Europe; many PC game makers (Blizzard and Bioware among them) release "Version Originale" (VO) in France with English text and VO (as released in the US and UK) for fans who want to play the game but don't want to wait for the translation. At later times, the translation has become available to those who want to enjoy it that way.
There are two things this suggestion breaks: a) the release/hit practice that has taken over the video game industry (i.e. - a game must sell the majority of units in the first two months, otherwise it's considered a failure) and b) the opportunity for bugs to be fixed in the intervening six months and an "International" version release later in Japan incorporating all those fixes. Boo-hoo on making more money by double-dipping in the Japanese market.
PAL is 50Hz instead of 60Hz. Leads me to believe there's more than just voiceovers and text, but I could be wrong.
Yet these days a lot of games released in PAL territories are 60hz only anyway - just look at most 360 releases, they're increasingly 60hz only. They used to have a big panel on the front of the box saying '60hz only', now it's relegated to a little one on the back. The fact is you have to have a pretty old TV nowadays for it to not be 60hz compatible, and if you do then you really DO need to upgrade.
and I still can't get enough of the battle theme....
Final Fantasy 8 - Sept. 1999
Final Fantasy 9 - Nov. 2000
Final Fantasy 10 - Dec. 2001
Final Fantasy X-2 - Nov. 2003
Final Fantasy 11 - March 2004
Final Fantasy 12 - Oct. 2006
I know not many count X-2 and XI, so it felt like a 5 year stint between games then. But right now this is the longest dev time between FF games in recent history.
{/sarcasm]
Persona 4, a very japanese game had a great localization and great voice cast too(english and japanese).
Good for them. I hope they start releasing names of the english cast. I hope to god my man Johnny Yong Bosch is playing Snow. Snow was MADE for JYB.
