Square Enix sped up Final Fantasy XIII localization photo

Way back in 2007, we heard that Final Fantasy XIII wouldn't be out until 2009, and now that we're actually in 2009, Square says it'll be 2010. The long wait is nothing new for Final Fantasy fans, who are used to waiting several years between each of the major installments, but we all agree that Final Fantasy XIII looks hot. Like, really hot. Therefore, it makes the wait feel all the longer.

According to UK website Videogamer, it may be that the wait won't be as long as we thought. Producer Yoshinori Kitase spoke about the localization process, offering up some hopeful information for fans:

"Traditionally the Final Fantasy numbered series, it takes about half a year between the release in Japan and the release in North America, and another half a year before it's released in Europe. But we would like to minimize this, this time ... for example, we have already started recording English voices, and also the text localization has been in progress, too. Normally we complete the Japanese version first, then move on to the US and EU versions, but this time there are some tasks that are happening simultaneously. So this time we're hoping to release sooner than a year later [in Europe] than the Japanese release."

I'm not going to hold my breath, but at the same time it's nice to know that the localization is going differently than before (and that English voices are already being recorded!). The sooner the better, as we want to play it super bad. Also, then I can buy the official soundtrack instead of sitting on the Final Fantasy XIII homepage and listening to the music over and over like a total dweeb.

Kon wants FFXIII?

I thought all he wanted was Rukia's affection.

Oh well, I could be wrong.

That being said, I do want to get my hands on the game if only for the music.

This is very similar to the 'UK gets Final Fantasy XIII last' article done a few hours ago. But if Final Fantasy XIII gets released at Christmas or around then I will be a very happy girl.

FF has been a huge part of my gaming life since I first experienced 1, but mostly 4. I even dabbled in 11, with the unconventional choice of 10 being my favorite. After the disappointment that was 12 (it wasn't bad in my opinion, it just wasn't "special", like all the other FF games), 13 is looking really, really good.

I hope they take the time to lip sync the voices, that would be awesome. The non syncing in FFX really bugged the pants off of me.

Thats one thing that impressed me with at least the FMVs in Crisis Core, they actually went back and did that.

@Collette/Article
We do not all agree, I actually dont think FF13 looks that great ;_;

You know, Colette, someone already uploaded all the FFXIII music from both the website and the demo in MP3 format.

I know this because I've also been listening to it like a total dweeb.

From my very first battle against Warmech, I have been hooked to FF games. This will be no exception.

Here's hoping the English voices are as fantastic as they were in FFXII!

A major Japanese dev changing the status quo is a good sign, I think.

the wait has been so long that I've kinda stopped caring about Final Fantasy XIII to be honest, but when it does eventually come I'll defiantly check it out

@Phoenix Gamma: Link please!!!
@News: I'm really excited. I was worried that the US would have to wait a year or more due to Dev time on the 360 version (God damn day and date release). If this is in my hands by late '09/early 2010 I'll be a happy camper.

I will say that right now(after watching those videos of the english subbed demo on G4), I am kind of excited for XIII. The combat system looks like it could be really slick, the graphics are good enough(some textures could be crisper and animations could be smoother), and the music...oh...that battle music. I also like how they appear to be going for a more sci-fi/cyberpunk feel with this one too.

I don't think it'll make much of a difference to me though whether it comes out before or after the new year because I'm definately waiting for reviews and renting it before I make a purchase.

I was excited...2 years ago...sadly...because FF used to be my favorite series. I would tremble with excitement as the date neared. But now...meh. I still will play it tho

@Brian Keljore: it wasn't her "affection" that he wants haw haw haw.

Thanks for rubbing it in that us Europeans won't be seeing FF-13 until at least early next year T_T

This is childish. Let's get into the 21st century, shall we? Release the game with subtitles when the Japanese launch occurs, then release a downloadable patch for English (or French, or Spanish, etc) VO and lipsync. Those who can wait can get the English version on disc (since not everyone has broadband or the HD space on their PS3s) when it comes out in six months, and assail their ears with dialogue approved by the world-renowned Deaf Approval Union. The DAU doesn't work cheap, or get results quickly, but if you want really bad English VO, there's no one else you can trust.

Seriously though, this is more than likely costing Square-Enix more money than the other traditional route, since rewrites, re-lipsyncs, re-recordings, and other such costly measures are taken to ensure a simultaneous release in multiple regions. Let's not even discuss the increased possibilities for lower quality control.

As an example of where this suggestion works is in Europe; many PC game makers (Blizzard and Bioware among them) release "Version Originale" (VO) in France with English text and VO (as released in the US and UK) for fans who want to play the game but don't want to wait for the translation. At later times, the translation has become available to those who want to enjoy it that way.

There are two things this suggestion breaks: a) the release/hit practice that has taken over the video game industry (i.e. - a game must sell the majority of units in the first two months, otherwise it's considered a failure) and b) the opportunity for bugs to be fixed in the intervening six months and an "International" version release later in Japan incorporating all those fixes. Boo-hoo on making more money by double-dipping in the Japanese market.

PAL is 50Hz instead of 60Hz. Leads me to believe there's more than just voiceovers and text, but I could be wrong.

@ JonB

Yet these days a lot of games released in PAL territories are 60hz only anyway - just look at most 360 releases, they're increasingly 60hz only. They used to have a big panel on the front of the box saying '60hz only', now it's relegated to a little one on the back. The fact is you have to have a pretty old TV nowadays for it to not be 60hz compatible, and if you do then you really DO need to upgrade.

Yawn, this is taking way too long, even for Final Fantasy standards. Squeenix usually releases Final Fantasy games every 1-2 years, but now it's almost 6 years?! What the hell? What were they doing for all this time? Partying?

I don't see any way of them porting the game over to the 360 in half a year.

To be fair, Squeenix didn't have a problem with horrible dev times between games until after FFX.

Final Fantasy 8 - Sept. 1999
Final Fantasy 9 - Nov. 2000
Final Fantasy 10 - Dec. 2001
Final Fantasy X-2 - Nov. 2003
Final Fantasy 11 - March 2004
Final Fantasy 12 - Oct. 2006

I know not many count X-2 and XI, so it felt like a 5 year stint between games then. But right now this is the longest dev time between FF games in recent history.

Release the game now, bugs and all. Don't bother polishing it, or making it, you know, actually good. We as consumers have a right to play new FF games at least once a year , and since we are essentially your master(s), Squeenix (we pay your bills, yadayadayada), you OWE us! Leave the Japanese subtitles and VO and don't bother with the English translation, I will learn to speak/read it.

{/sarcasm]

...And the trend of wanting japanese voices continues, and it makes no sense. They usually lip sync it for the english version(like MGS games) and usually the english voices are on par with the japanese ones. It's not the 80s (or even partly the 90s) anymore. FFX had questionable acting, but if FFXII did anything right it was the voice work.

Persona 4, a very japanese game had a great localization and great voice cast too(english and japanese).

Good for them. I hope they start releasing names of the english cast. I hope to god my man Johnny Yong Bosch is playing Snow. Snow was MADE for JYB.
