Square Enix ships five million Final Fantasy XIIIs photo

Did you know that Final Fantasy XIII is kind of a big deal? Apparently it is, because Square Enix has revealed that five million copies of the thing has shipped worldwide. Three million of those games have infiltrated North America and Europe. Yeah, this game is rather large.

XIII is still selling really well in Japan, having launched for the PS3 only on December 17. Also, the entire Final Fantasy franchise has reached a cumulative 96 million shipments worldwide. That's more than your brain can actually conceive.

So yes. Final Fantasy is quite popular.

I'm liking it more than I thought I would. And I lol every time the header image comes up in my game.

same here, completely loving it. kinda slow at first, but it worked with the story, imo.

I'm definitely enjoying the game more than I was expecting to. Once you get over that initial bump, it's smooth sailing and excellent.

It seems the Haters had the loudest voices again.

12 got a bad rap and that was a great game too.
Final Fantasy XIII is the most "Final Fantasy" since number 9.

I loved 12, until my brother deleted my 30 hour game save right before my eyes. By accident, but still...

I thought twelve was pretty and polished but kinda boring. Maybe I am jaded. Maybe the near lethal amounts of mescaline and Sunny Delight I was putting in my system at the time affected my perception of the game. Who knows?

I'm still on the fence. I could squeeze it into my budget but if I do that and don't like it I'll be crazy pissed (*cough*DA:O*cough*).

I'm not a big JRPG player but there are a select few I really love and I'm always willing to give FF a shot.

@Xzyliac

I'd call it an Adventure/RPG, if that floats your boat. The story so far is great (4 hours in) and the battle system is just starting to open up. The battles are a lot faster than any other JRPG I've played. Oh, and I never played DA:O though, so I wouldn't know what you'd be comparing it to.

The game is a linear gameplay borefest for about 5-8 hours or so. After that, its still linear for a while, but when the entirety of the gameplay is finally given to you, it becomes a frantic, fast-paced game of super-chess.

So if you get it, don't make a decision on giving up until AT LEAST after you pick up your 6th party member.

@Xzyliac:
FFXIII is probably the least 'JRPG' one of the series so far, and is therefore likely a good entry point for you.

I'm no fanboi, but I have to say I've been glued to it since purchasing it yesterday, and my jaw has hit the floor multiple times gawking at the epicness and detail that's unfolding on my screen at regular intervals.

The combat system slowly opens up over the course of the early game and turns into one of the most satisfying ATB systems out of all of them.
Yes, it starts off slow and linear, but once you start progressing deeper into it's story and mechanisms you realise it was deliberately re-setting your expectations and 'training' you for the complexity that follows.

And sure, it has it's share of 'annoying' characters, but deliberately so..

In terms of DA:O, for what it's worth, I'm 100x more invested in FFXIII and I have way more difficulty putting down the controller to take a break than I ever did with Alistair and co (endearing though they may well be).

Buy it (for PS3 if you have one), and put it on the biggest viewable device you have in your house - it deserves it.

I wouldn't call it a borefest, but I can see where you're coming from. I'm enjoying the story.

I'll definitely take your opinions into consideration. I don't have a PS3 but that doesn't phase me at all. I'm playing on my tv in my room anyway so it's not like I'm missing a whole lot.

oh, and if anyone on the fence wasn't aware (and cares); first run copies come bundled with a code that might get you access to the FFIV PS3 beta. It's not guaranteed you'll get in, but you get to apply early.

Picked up the game last night and so far it's a slow burn. I know it will pick up at some point but it would have been nice to have the option to jump right in and play without all the hand holding. Also, I would have appreciated the illusion of a non-linear game, SquareEnix did a good job of that in the past so I'm confused as to why they did not in this instance. Anyway, I'll keep trucking away and hope for the best. Patience stays with me!!

I just got Mass Effect 2 (for $40 on that Amazon sale), so this will have to wait. I'm hoping it gets a similar price drop in a few months. It seems like that's been happening more often in the past year.

I've heard that it did not sell as well in Japan as they'd expected or hoped. Also, the price of the game there has dropped to roughly $30.

Still, it's a hell of a game after the training wheels come off.

So they've shipped their break even amount, then. Didn't they have to sell 5 million to break even?

I'm not sure if I'm going to pick this up today... Yakuza 3 seems to take forever to come here in Canada so I guess if I show up and they only have FFXIII I'm gonna buy it anyways because I'm a compulsive buyer....

There definitely is a lot of hand holding at first. But once you get past that, the game really picks up. I just got to the point where i could upgrade my weapons and accessories last night and I'm finally starting to feel like I'm gaining more control over everything.

It's pretty great. If it has a problem (besides the fact that they didn't just copy-pasta XII's great camera controls and made a floaty, horrible monstrosity instead), it's that nearly every aspect of the game, sans presentation, with a couple little tweaks could have been absolutely amazing. I keep seeing places where one *tiny* change would have helped make this the best Final Fantasy, perhaps the best game ever, but alas.

Then again, if I'm complaining about a game not being completely amazing, and have only one legitimate complaint (well, one and a half), it's probably pretty good. Considering I had about twelve with XII, and it's one of my favorite games.

I think the HD prettiness helped counteract the slowness of the first 2 chapters (only a couple of hours). Speeds up a lot (the battle system) once you hit chapter 3. Oh, and I love it.

I allways hated FF. Never got into it.
But iam playing with the thougt of buy it...for my girlfriend of curse.
But first i want to see a good review.
Best here on Destructoid, they come close to my tastes and they look at things that matter most about a game for me.
If i read a review elswere im a bit scared it is writen by some FF otaku who gives everything a 100/100 score only because.

lol'd at header pic.

After playing for about 7 hours, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. A lot of that has to do with the combat, once it starts to open up, it's so cool. It's easily the fastest-paced JRPG I've played. The story jumps wildly from being interesting to being convoluted as all hell though. And it's a shame that there is so little exploration, because the environments, like everything, are goddamn beautiful. But still, it's a pretty enjoyable game.

I'm a couple of hrs into Disc 2 now (read: 13hrs gameplay time). And so far it is quite remarkably like running down the most gorgeous hallway you have ever seen, I find myself stopping just to look at the sky or horizon a lot.

The battle system is quite a bit faster and if you aren't careful you'll get brought down by regular monsters even.

My friend is hell-bent on finding a place to grind. I haven't yet needed to and so have not made any attempts to find places to run in circles.

If you liked Final Fantasy X, you are really going to like Final Fantasy XIII let's put it that way.

I am thoroughly enjoying it. The combat system and character progression just opened up to me and that's where it begins to take off.

I just can't stand vanille's on and off aussy accent. That shit always throughs me off.

Oh yeah, all of you that are loving it now, wait until you hit Gran Pulse. That place is enormous. Easily dumped 30 hours into it, beat the game, and still have plenty to do as far as I can tell.

meh Jim not to be rude but any FF game after FF6 was really not much of a deal for me considering that I only have Nintendo systems and Have not played a true FF games since 1994.

not that I hate them but all I have been bale to play is the bad CC games except the last one was not too bad on wii.

I would like to see Square make a real RPG on the wii that fits in the FF universe on the wii that is as good as Super Mario galaxy.
