Did you know that Final Fantasy XIII is kind of a big deal? Apparently it is, because Square Enix has revealed that five million copies of the thing has shipped worldwide. Three million of those games have infiltrated North America and Europe. Yeah, this game is rather large.
XIII is still selling really well in Japan, having launched for the PS3 only on December 17. Also, the entire Final Fantasy franchise has reached a cumulative 96 million shipments worldwide. That's more than your brain can actually conceive.
So yes. Final Fantasy is quite popular.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
12 got a bad rap and that was a great game too.
Final Fantasy XIII is the most "Final Fantasy" since number 9.
I'm not a big JRPG player but there are a select few I really love and I'm always willing to give FF a shot.
why did you buy a game you weren't going to play?
I'd call it an Adventure/RPG, if that floats your boat. The story so far is great (4 hours in) and the battle system is just starting to open up. The battles are a lot faster than any other JRPG I've played. Oh, and I never played DA:O though, so I wouldn't know what you'd be comparing it to.
So if you get it, don't make a decision on giving up until AT LEAST after you pick up your 6th party member.
FFXIII is probably the least 'JRPG' one of the series so far, and is therefore likely a good entry point for you.
I'm no fanboi, but I have to say I've been glued to it since purchasing it yesterday, and my jaw has hit the floor multiple times gawking at the epicness and detail that's unfolding on my screen at regular intervals.
The combat system slowly opens up over the course of the early game and turns into one of the most satisfying ATB systems out of all of them.
Yes, it starts off slow and linear, but once you start progressing deeper into it's story and mechanisms you realise it was deliberately re-setting your expectations and 'training' you for the complexity that follows.
And sure, it has it's share of 'annoying' characters, but deliberately so..
In terms of DA:O, for what it's worth, I'm 100x more invested in FFXIII and I have way more difficulty putting down the controller to take a break than I ever did with Alistair and co (endearing though they may well be).
Buy it (for PS3 if you have one), and put it on the biggest viewable device you have in your house - it deserves it.
I'll definitely take your opinions into consideration. I don't have a PS3 but that doesn't phase me at all. I'm playing on my tv in my room anyway so it's not like I'm missing a whole lot.
Still, it's a hell of a game after the training wheels come off.
Then again, if I'm complaining about a game not being completely amazing, and have only one legitimate complaint (well, one and a half), it's probably pretty good. Considering I had about twelve with XII, and it's one of my favorite games.
But iam playing with the thougt of buy it...for my girlfriend of curse.
But first i want to see a good review.
Best here on Destructoid, they come close to my tastes and they look at things that matter most about a game for me.
If i read a review elswere im a bit scared it is writen by some FF otaku who gives everything a 100/100 score only because.
After playing for about 7 hours, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. A lot of that has to do with the combat, once it starts to open up, it's so cool. It's easily the fastest-paced JRPG I've played. The story jumps wildly from being interesting to being convoluted as all hell though. And it's a shame that there is so little exploration, because the environments, like everything, are goddamn beautiful. But still, it's a pretty enjoyable game.
The battle system is quite a bit faster and if you aren't careful you'll get brought down by regular monsters even.
My friend is hell-bent on finding a place to grind. I haven't yet needed to and so have not made any attempts to find places to run in circles.
I am thoroughly enjoying it. The combat system and character progression just opened up to me and that's where it begins to take off.
I just can't stand vanille's on and off aussy accent. That shit always throughs me off.
not that I hate them but all I have been bale to play is the bad CC games except the last one was not too bad on wii.
I would like to see Square make a real RPG on the wii that fits in the FF universe on the wii that is as good as Super Mario galaxy.
