Square Enix set to work on the cinematics for Deus Ex 3 photo

Eidos Montreal isn’t working on Deus Ex 3 alone. In a recent conversation with Edge, studio GM Stephane D’Astous revealed that Square Enix Tokyo is planning to handle the CGI cinematics for the upcoming follow-up to a bad game. Neat.

"Deus Ex 3 is going to be the first project which will be a concrete product of joint effort between Square Enix and Eidos," said D'Astous. "The cinematics -- by which I mean any CGI pre-rendered cinematics -- are going to be done in Tokyo by Square Enix, and that's going to be amazing."

D’Astous said the idea behind this collaboration came to him one summer morning, probably before he bothered to eat breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day and certainly the most important one in the morning.

"It was in April when Square Enix acquired us, and by June, July I was trying to think of a project we could do together. One morning I woke up and I said, we'll, they're known for their cinematics, so why not get them involved with those?"

In the short conversation, D’Astous also teased that the Square Enix Tokyo team wants to work on Thief 4 (or Thi4f) in addition to Deus Ex 3. But it appears no firm plans are in place quite yet.

Deux Ex 2 was bad? Maybe lacking in the exploration department and a little shorter than the first, but also a lot less redundant than the first. But oh yeah, they made it for consoles, too, that apparently was why it was a "bad" game. PC gamers never let it have a chance.

Cool to see SE show interest in these two particular franchises, though. So long as they're not too Japanafied they seem like the perfect kinds of games for the two studios to collaborate one, they do have a fair share of RPG elements, but have always lacked one thing SE seems to obsess over - polish.

Cautious optimism... rising...

I really want this to rock. But I really don't know if it will. This helps at least.

I liked Deus Ex 2. A lot of people were instantly turned off of it because it wasn't as good as the original, kind of like Call of Duty 2, but if you stuck with it there was a great game to be had.

If Deus Ex is a 10 out of 10 as most would agree, Invisible War is like a strong 8. Mods for the textures have made it playable even today as well.

Anyway, this is cool news I guess. I like CGI movies in games, I know in-game assets are good enough to tell the story now, but there's something about a slick CG movie that makes the game feel more badass. Since Deus Ex 3 has been a long time in development I really hope it is the polished and deep RPG experience the developers have promised.

Finally some news! Glad to hear it's still being worked on. I don't care if it doesn't quite live up to the original, the first two were a blast, and it's an awesome enough universe that even a mediocre game set in it can be fun. Now if they could just give us a release date...

Dues Ex 2 was also considered bad because it has less gameplay features then the original. Hacking the original actually required some input instead of just clicking on a door.

I didn't mind DX2 thaaat much, but it was definitely not a worthy sequel. CGI movies in Deus Ex? Don't think that's really necessary... The few in-engine scenes in DX1 worked fine for keeping you attached to the game world imo.

I never played DX1, and I thought DX2 was a great game. I suppose that's why.

@Steel

You're referring to the redundant elements. There were enhancements that you could make to weapons to make up for not choosing the Biomod in the original DX and then there were skill points to improve your abilities with said weapons. There's no balance there. DX2 was more balanced in that regard

The hacking was nothing special. Wasn't even a required part of the game in many cases. Just because something seems to add meaning and complexity to a game doesn't mean that it does.

I played DX and DX2 practically right next to each other, so I never had the chance to look at DX through rose-tinted glasses. I liked it, but also saw it for what it was. My biggest gripe with DX2 would be the graphics were so emphasized the game itself was smaller at the expense of looking pretty, which also diminished exploration quite a bit.

I was hoping Deus Ex 3 would be as successful a spiritual reimagining as Bioshock was to System Shock. One of the biggest things Bioshock nailed was not interrupting your play experience with cutscenes, so this disappoints me.

Get your Japanese anachronisms out of my contemporary Western gameplay (no offense to the few Japenese devs who "get it")! Feel free to disagree, of course. Different strokes and all that (read: do not troll me for not being simply being happy).

I don't have much hope for Deus Ex 3, I wish Warren Spector was working on it (I know he helped make DX2, which sucked, but I'm sure he's learned the mistakes of the sequel).

How very.... unnecesary. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Also Deus Ex kicks ass, and Deus Ex 2 is right behind it. I don't understand why it gets so much hate.

This new scares me not because of the involvement of Square Enix(which is what normally makes me question the quality of a game), but rather the mention of cinematics.

I can only hope that this only refers to the opening and ending scenes >.<

The Deus Ex games have had CG intros and endings, so I fail to see why they would suddenly start being injected in every corner of the game. Oh right, people assume things about SE that they don't always do.

Also, it already had the convoluted plot worthy of an anime or comic book anyway. Of course, this was compounded by DX2's "all the endings were true" premise for the story. I hope they avoid that an just pick one for DX3.

Usually when you go with "all endings are true" that just means you've created a multiverse and that's OK, but when you try to blend all endings into the next phase that's kinda messy.

"...the follow-up to a bad game"?
Shit Brad, you just showed us all that you don't know what you're talking about.
DX2 wasn't perhaps as great as people anticipated, but it was good in its own right, and packing a shit-load of atmosphere.
Gamers are way too good at holding grudges when games don't quite reach their ridiculous expectations.
I'm pumped for DX3, cyberpunk needs a revival.

And yeah, Deus Ex 1 was leagues better than 2. Leagues.

There was never a Deus Ex 2. There was this thing called Invisible War... and I like to believe it had nothing to do with the original game. I'd actually like to forget that it ever existed.

The key word here is "pre-rendered". Any game with graphics is made entirely out of CGI.

Reminder that Deus Ex 3 will have regenerating health and a cover system, and that the guy in charge of creating it thinks that the original game was "too slow."

DX3 will be a prequel that takes place even before the original. The multi-endings within DX: Invisible War probably won't effect DX3's story.

this is the first time I've seen a japanese/north american buyout actually leverage some strength on the japanese side. usually it just means japanese companies outsourcing their IPs to cheap US/canadian labor, but in this case, everyone could benefit from getting Square to crank out non-finalfantasy Videos.

deus ex 2 invisible war was quite good once the patch was released. I would say quite ahead of its time maybe... buggy, but ahead.

Now I really love the idea of a Thief 4.

Will Deus Ex 3 have a 1 hour unskippable intro?

In all seriousness though, it is interesting to see what Square Enix would come up with. If they could pull off the dark and serious look of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within or even Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, perhaps they have something there.

DX was awesome because my 200MHz pentium could run it.
Thief was awesome because i brought it out of an impulse buy and ended up being floored by it.
Thief 3 was awesome because my old radeon could play it.
Thief 2 was awesome but not as awesome as Thief 1.
DX2 was awesome until it got kind of boring at the end.

As for DX3, Gameplay > CGI.
As for Thi4f, please bring Garret back, and maybe a new apprentice.
