Square Enix says 'wtf?' to Koei/Tecmo merger photo

The games industry is turning into a geekier version of Dallas lately, with all the drama flying around the board rooms. There are new developments in the Square Enix/Koei/Tecmo love triangle, as Squeenix has responded to the rejection of its friendly takeover bid. The house of Final Fantasy was snubbed by Tecmo earlier today, before it announced that it was in talks with Koei and pursuing a merger.

Square Enix would like some answers and has asked Tecmo to clarify what exactly is going on, and why the company's offer was rejected. Here's the official request:

The Company immediately requested TECMO for explanation of some issues as follows:

1. Please confirm that the decision on the start of discussions with KOEI toward integration of management is the reason for rejection of the Proposal.

2. If that is the case, please clarify concretely that major terms of integration of management with KOEI (form of the integration, stock prices assumption, integration ratio and so forth) are favorable for TECMO's shareholders than the Proposal.

3. If not, please clarify that TECMO has an alternative plan, which is favorable for TECMO's shareholders than the Proposal.

The Company will make definitive decision on its plan immediately after receiving a response from TECMO.

I think the only sensible way for Tecmo to respond to this is to say: "I just don't see a future for us. I'm sorry, it's not you, it's me." There's certainly a slight whiff of bitterness coming from the Square Enix camp here, especially with regards to the cynical swipe regarding Tecmo's shareholders. Sadly, I foresee these kinds of shenanigans happening more and more as the industry begins to consolidate and plays for power are made.

They just want Tecmo to publicly admit that Squenix's deal will give Tecmo's shareholders the most bang for their buck, and then Squenix can go ahead with a smoother hostile takeover bid.

Of course, Tecmo will come back with some explanation of how, even if Koei is offering less per share than Squenix, it nevertheless somehow builds more value for the shareholders than buckling under to Squenix. Also Tecmo will claim that the shareholders will be better off as they were before all the takeover talk, which is usually even harder to claim with a straight face.

Well, if you ever wondered what would it be like to face Ryu Hayabusa against 3,975 faceless samurai at one time, It looks like we might be finding out.

I don't think Square knows how to take rejection.

Square has backed down now. I guess persistance doesn't count in the world of gaming. EA proved that.

I think SE should just roll over both of them and be like, "You'll thank us later. Now let's get Final Fantasy Warriors out the door in 6 months."

It sounds like a letter from someone that just got dumped.

"Just tell me what I did wrong? You know you'd be happier with me!"

Word has it that Balthier is currently sneaking into Tecmo HQ to steal Ryu's Dragon Sword.

This shall be a bloody war spurned by politics and retarded plot lines.

Does this mean we could get Dynasty Warriors and Monster Rancher hybrid?

Perhaps a Ninja Gaiden where you consult your war strategist on how best to flip out and kill people.

Thank god the last thing ninja gaiden needs is for sqaure to piss on it like it does with the on going suckage that they turned final fantasy into since final fantasy 7.

They would turn Ryu haybusa into one of there sucktasic characters that look like a "man-women" like Cloud and then make him an annoying ass EMO like sepiroth, no wait that is all the characters of final fantasy since 7..

Well no I take that back 9 was rather decent on characters and not being annoying.

Oh and then they would put the even sucker vincient in ninja gaiden and make it a dirge of ceberus suck fest, you know since it did not suck enough the first time.

OH and the mana games will get Dawn of mana Tecomo bowl with havok physics as there final piss on what was a good game series known as secret of mana.

and then they will just keep ignoring chrono trigger like always and put out a port of it every 6 years.

Nice choice Tecmo, even with the stale ass Dynasy warrior games, they have less of a chance at screwing you over, the games sqaure would make you do would suck so much you would go under in 3 days.

Much like how the final fantsy films is still making sqaure bleed and that is a good thing, that level of suck is not to be forgive and they should be forever punished.
