Square Enix saves guilds from the trouble of vomiting, boss will be fixed photo

As we reported previously, there is a Notorious Monster in Final Fantasy XI that is really hard. So hard, in fact, that you can fight it for over 18 hours and get nothing but vomit and tears to prove your mettle. Recently, Kotaku reported that Square Enix is going to fix the issue.

An update to Final Fantasy XI’s official site pointed out that this “issue of major unrest in the community” needed “alterations [to] prevent such battles from exceeding a certain predetermined length of time.” Square apparently has some sort of shut-off counter when it comes to Notorious Monsters, and the vomit clan approached Panemonium Warden using “unanticipated methods” which then led to the whole “I’m getting literally sick from playing this game” issue.

The update will roll out in September and will hopefully alleviate the need for water bottles and puke buckets for those that plan to brave Pandemonium Warden.

Can't they just come with a warning, like cigarettes?

KMCC: They did.

Like Big Cig, the really don't care about their own warnings though.

Hey, all we need to do to get them to fix something from now on is make a media blitz.

Good to know.

“unanticipated methods” aka "doing it wrong".

square should fix nothing, these people didn't have to play for 18 hours.

Psycho, Square themselves said the boss fight could take over 18 hours.

I think psycho's point is that nobody's putting a gun to their head, it's the player's decision to sit there for 18 hours fighting a single monster. Square is just changing it because of this controversy, they NEVER change anything because the players want it.

The controversy is there because no digital monster should take 18 hours to beat.

Nope, it's because it's a health hazard.

I'm a bit thrown by the "unanticipated methods" part - some of the comments on Kotaku indicated that the Guild was one of the best in the game, and that the monster had never been beaten. But the language of the correction makes it sound like the players methods led to the 18+ hour deal, not the difficulty of the monster. So was Pandemonium really that hard, or were they doing it wrong?

Also, gaming till you literally vomit is kind of awesome, if true.

@-PL-: Which plays right into a boss should not take 18 hours to fucking beat.

If: A Boss takes 18 or more hours to beat,

You: Feel really fucked up after you kick ass/ get your ass kicked.

@Burzumy: I read a battle summery by one of the members of BoL, and from the looks of it, it seems like the shit itself is not that hard, there is just a lot of that shit, making it seem like it's hard, when it's really just tedious and takes a long time. BoL said they could have done it in about 5 or 6 more hours after they quit, but then people started AFK'n and vomiting after a massive wipe, so they stopped.

Not to say a newcomer would come in and whip the floor with Pandemonium if Square made it weaker/removed some of the shit required to beat him/her, as it is tough on its own, apparently.

What the hell does Squeenix mean by "Unanticipated Methods"?? The one where you fight it and you pass out? I guess Asian gamers have more stamina :D

Hey, and I thought Molten Core was bad, at least it never made me vomit, just tend to alt+tab out and watch Youtube videos as loot was distributed.

Shut-off counter? So instead of spending 18 hours to kill the boss, they just have to survive for 12 now?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think monster battles should be 18 hours. But Square doesn't care. Everything about FFXI is just a trick to get people to play as long as possible. Imagine how much longer things would take in WoW without flight masters. That is FFXI.

If players merely complained about these monster fights, Square wouldn't have done anything. People had to actually start getting physically ill in order for Square to do anything, because it becomes a legal risk. The last thing they need is some kid dying in front of his computer screen because of a 24 hour boss battle. But, if people didn't get sick, Square would try to drag it out as long as possible because that is what they do.

This just blows my mind. Why would anyone do anything for 18 hours straight? And what in game reward could possibly make this worth attempting?

PL is right. Players have been complaining over monsters such as Tiamat, Jormungand, Vrtra, Absolute Virtue ect for years. Such fights takes the need of 20+ players (normally around 30+) to all unite at a certain time point to fight for the next 1-5hours non-stop, no breaks, no mistakes. Any small mistake could lead to Deathga to everyone and loosing all that time played.

@ Superfluous Moniker - If you tasted FF11, you would realize that in order to be good or respected, you need to be the best, to be the best you need to fight the impossible, and hope you get something. FF11 really makes that point out. Having a +1 item can drastically make a difference in your battles, so you will see people cutting each others throats just to get a inch more than the rest.

btw, I am one of those rare people that actually got laid through FF11, so some rewards are actually worth it, lol, but wouldn't do it again. I prefer just going out n club for that stuff.

oh and btw, I call BS on that SE is going to fix anything. They are just going to give some minor relief by reducing monsters HP a little or making them not so much insanely hard, but in the end it will still take hours to beat + the hours of preparations.

in the past 7 years this game has been out, only minor tweaks have been done to help players a BIT, but not to the point you can do shit by your self.

I never liked boss battles. That whole game dynamic is getting old, real old. The longest I would possibly considering engaging a boss battle in would be 20 mins. 18 hours on a single boss? Yeah, if you PAID ME to do it. Sometimes when Japanese video game developers go over the top they go right over the top and head out towards Pluto.

Cube: Linkshells are Guilds, just another name for them.

Anyone notice fta that the change is to make a "decisive outcome obtained in a shorter time"? Any bets that after 2 hours the boss drops AoE insta-kills ad nauseum?

I still have the sinking feeling that people are doing it wrong - I can think of more than a few "trick" fights that when done wrong are nigh impossible.
