Square Enix's Taku Murata speaks about Crystal Tools photo

Remember back last year when we got word about Square-Enix licensing the Unreal Engine 3? Then they announced the "White Engine", which had its name changed to the "Crystal Tools" engine around GDC time? Since then, we haven't heard too much about the newly renamed initiative, but thanks to an interview over at Gamasutra with Taku Murata, Crystal Tools' General Manager, some detailed information about the project has finally come to light. From the interview:

GS: A lot of companies in Japan have mentioned that they feel that the Japanese game market is falling behind in terms of technology, partially because PC development and advances in that sort of technology have been happening mostly in Western markets, and support is in English. This engine, though, seems quite high-end. It's very unusual within the Japanese industry right now. Do you agree with that?

TM: Until the PS3 was launched, regarding the 360 and PS3, it is true. I agree that maybe Japanese game technology is behind because there were no previous experiences, or a base in that PC market in Japan back then. Since then, things have changed. Now, I think it has come to a point when the PC architecture and technologies have advanced, particularly in terms of the Japanese way of expression, such as, "In this game, we feel very strongly that we are very capable."

I do think that in terms of the language barrier, yes, it still is a challenge. We do face those challenges in terms of communication, but in terms of technology, I don't think we're behind. We probably have conquered that problem...or probably we have gone across that point and advanced.

With the engine confirmed for use in FFXIII as well as Square's upcoming MMO, we can expect to see some changes coming soon, but what does that mean for the average Final Fantasy fan? Murata describes Crystal Tools as "very Square-like" in one part of the interview, but that isn't saying much considering we've never seen their flair applied in this way before. We'll have to wait to see what hands-on time with these games feels like before we can actually comment, but it's interesting news regardless.

If this type of thing floats your boat, you can check out the full interview here.

Advancement is good, but I doubt it will be close to the advancements made here in the West. Will have to wait and see the engine in action to really say anything else about it.

From the article - "Since I joined Square, I've done Secret of Mana, and the second in the series of that -- Seiken Densetsu 3 -- I don't know if it's been released here."

No it hasn't ya fucker! Get on it!

I agree with you loki d20. The engine will probably be fully developed in japan, and we'll just have to wait until it's finished to see a lot more of what it has to offer. :)

Well, I'm a FF fan but own a Wii and DS... so I don't expect to get any of the Crystal Tools love. XD

knowing square, no matter what engine they use to make their games, they will always be at the top of the line graphically. at least their final fantasy games will be.

@loki_d20 and PaperBowser0

if the trailers they've released so far, which shows what seems to be gameplay footage (theirs a menu), and which square has confirmed that about half of isn't CG (sorry for the bad grammar), then the white engine/crystal tools is definitely looking really good. and the trailers are from almost 2 years ago at this point.

It doesn't matter what their tools look like. Anyone who attended their WiiWare session this past GDC knows that no matter how awesome Square's tools are, their procedures to create a game are old, stagnant, crippled, and just plain stupid. Instead of starting the design of a game via mechanics, technical feats, or feature listings, they draw up art assets.

Yeah, that's right... Art assets.

And that's what's used to launch the development of a game...

I'm not saying Square sucks or their games suck, I'm a huge fan myself. But it really doesn't matter how good their technology is, their development will forever be slower than it could be and their ability to increase the feature set or implement new ideas is stifled all because of their traditional Japanese businessman red-taped company.

Still... after FFXII, I'm looking forward to FFXIII. But I'm looking more forward to FFT:A2 :)

But...

Can it do Crysis? I really doubt it can come anywhere close to it!

So...is this a new game engine entirely, or is it jsut basically a Japanese Unreal 3 engine? Or, is it like Unreal but catered for emo-whiny action rpgs?

I played about 20 hours of FFXII before I realised I didn't give a shit about any of the characters, I didn't like the combat system, and the way the story was structured with cyclical 5 minute cutscenes, followed by 3 hour dungeons, followed by cutscenes continuing the conversation being had 5 minutes ago completely disconnected me from the story. I stopped playing, haven't played since, and have no interest in going back to it. Square were my favourite games company at one stage, I'd buy everything that had their name on it, but they've utterly killed any interest I once had in their games. FFXIII is a big "meh" for me.

'Very Square-like' in the sense it makes Nomura's character design extra pretty?

->Veck: No, what he meant by that was that the main character shown is actually male.

So uh...no word on when they're actually going to finish a damn game that uses it? They're certainly taking their time.
