Square Enix's free MMO Concerto Gate comes to the US photo

One of those formerly Japan-only, "no fair!" games is actually coming to the US, and its a free MMO from Square Enix to boot!

Concerto Gate is a PC MMORPG, but it plays closer to a console RPG, and includes a roving party, random battles, and big-headed characters. OnNet USA will be the North American publisher for the game.

Concerto Gate includes something called the "terra-generating system," which constantly changes the topography of the game's world. Players will begin to see gradual changes in the game's scenery over time, and OnNet lists demolished forests and sprouting mountains as some examples.

OnNet USA's CEO Kevin Kim is sure you'll like this MMORPG. "I guarantee you will like Concerto Gate," he says. I like his confidence! Let's hope he's right.

Be on the lookout for a public beta launching early in 2008.

Normally these free Korean games always make me iffy, but this one is not only not Korean, it's a Squenix game. Here's to hoping it's decent; I've been looking for something to fill the MMORPG hole in my life since I stopped WoW a while ago.

So how will the costs be made up? Micro-transactions or ads?

I'd check this out. I've never played an MMO, but a free Square-Enix game could be worth trying out.

I'd consider it if they had an actual US server.

FFXI sucked -- there was 2 or 4 second lag to do anything, and if you went online at weird hours it was impossible to find people that spoke English. You can play with people who don't speak your language but it can make things very difficult.

(and don't knock the Japanese players, for a damn long while they were the only ones high level enough to cast Life on you;P )

This game looks really nice though. Good blend of retro and new. Definitely will at least try it.

This is cool to see. I'd prefer Front Mission Online instead though. That's the kind of MMO we really need to shake things up in the MMO scene, where too much fantasy stuff rules the roost.

If this CG onto consoles, I'd check it out.

XI was a fine game, it had its share of problems, but most games do. If it weren't for the ridiculous amount of GRINDAN and the time consumption, I'd probably still play,
