I always buy physical games rather than digital so the memory card price isn't really a problem right now, let's hope it stays that way.
Sony have always had a larger online focus, but with a messed up storage system how can the Vita take advantage of that?
So much for downloadable PSP games...
Wierd box art change, but it's not unheard of. One would hope that all games can save to the flash card/sticks itself.
@Dr-Peace, nintendo hasn't gotten hell for much worse. At least sony managed to design a good handheld in the first place before the bad decisions lol.
I have a feeling I'll get a vita at some point. If it lasts half as long as the psp, I know I will. Just a matter of having the money for one. :(
It's probably a little bit of both.
My guess would be that the game saves progress to the cart, but requires a Memory Card for DLC.
Sony probably means the sticker for games that do require the Memory Card to run, like say an MMO, and Square made the mistake of placing the sticker believing that all Memory Card requirements, even secondary ones like DLC, had to be displayed on the box.
So, an honest mistake with a wee-bit of misleading advertizing?
If it does require a memory stick, then it also requires the warning on the box.
Simples.
You shouldn't cause such alarm among your readers before informing yourself properly.
The official Twitter of the game said that the Memory Card is required for the DOWNLOAD VERSION only. So the packaged version will not need any memory, since it will save directly on the game card.
The news broke more than 9 hours ago on Andriasang.com
Hope this solves the doubts of anyone else wondering about this.
Best!
Yes I understand it is fucking stupid to use a memory card only compatible with vita but we havnt even had confirmation on price or what they look like. Yet people fucking blow up over japanese conversion that ALWAYS not end up being what it actually costs. Ill rage when I actually get proof of what it costs.
oh shit, i think Jim's been "replicated". the invasion begins..
has Sony still not announced what they'll be charging for Vita games? like the proprietary memory cards, im expecting them to be just as prohibitively expensive ($50+ range).
I've seen Sony mention that all games will be able to save to the card,or cloud, but that still doesn't help me that much.
I have a ton of PSP,and PS1 downloads I'd like to play. I'm hoping they release Memory card prices soon so I know if I need a second job or not.
they announced card prices a while back:
4GB = 2,200yen ($29)
8GB = 3,200yen ($42)
16GB = 5,500yen ($72)
32GB = 9,500yen ($124)
The problem isn't that games require external memory to work.
The problem is the PSV uses a propietary format that, as far as we know, is very expensive compared to more common memory solutions including Sony's own Memory Sticks.
"Sony says that Vita games deal with data in two ways depending on the title. Some save game directly to the game card. Others require a memory card. You'll be able to determine which is which by logos on the packaging."
Another theory is just as likely: Money.
early reports indicated that 5-10% of the writeable space will be reserved for save data, patches.
we are talking about 400mb for the 4gb card.
Probably some DLC might exceed that and needed the extra memory
Meant to point out, if you want a more accurate estimate for our price when converting game related stuff from yen to dollars, always just move the decimal two places to the left of the original announced price.
For example, 24980 yen = 249.80 dollars
Sony wouldn't want to cause confusion over what could be a big deal.
The second examples served to illustrate how conversion is handled within the industry.
that will give it about 200mb only for the save data and patches.
The system isn't out yet all this confusion is expected to get cleared up on time.
I think your about right, but i'm thinking the numbers will more rounded. 20$ for the smallest, for example.
If any of you want, you can ask me in this comment thread a question related to the PS Vita and I will try and answer it for you to the best of my ability. :)
I will probably only have time to answer one question.
The filesize of saves is actually pretty small most of the time.
It depends on how the game handles the "state" you are when you save.
Most of them work with "flags", that is, the game itself already knows all the possible things that can occur and assigns each one of them a flag that determines if it is in an "on/off" state, ans the savefile only has the status of these flags, and is therefore small.
Games with lots of customization, on the other hand, have large savefiles because they need to save a lot of info that is exclusive to your own game session. A game like Minecraft, for example, that randomly generates the gameworld as you play, has an increasingly larger savefile.
I think some games will require a memory card for saving game files, but regardles, time will tell, and people should take all info unveiled before release with a grain of salt.
I was going to ask you about the western release date, but I thought it's not yet recorded on your encyclopedia :P
My question is.. why they changed the initial design of the vita?
I like the new design, I'm just wandering ....
No one has really reported on lowering of specs in the clocked rate, RAM department, etc (except for one confusion from Novarama dev that was later clarified) so it would appear that the brick design simply allowed for Sony engineers to layout out the motherboard in such a way that it did not cause such amount of heat to be felt on people hands.

ah, that makes sense. I usually feel the heat when Playing a graphically intensive game on a smartphone.
Thanks, you do know a lot about the Vita :)
Well the fact that they are releasing an online capable machine with NO internal storage doesn't sound like good design to me, it's also a bit large for a handheld. So it's flawed before it even releases by the looks of things.
The Wii always had SOME internal storage, the DSi and the 3DS also. You could actually DOWNLOAD games/apps from the online stores WITHOUT needing to buy anything extra. That seems to be impossible with the Vita, as it has no storage of any kind out of the box.
And yes, the nub cradle for the 3DS is ridiculous, nobody even asked for it.
Yeah, I am not an engineer or even big student of these subjects, tbh. I just do this whole researching stuff in my spare time. If I am wrong, I would not mind being corrected. (a long as people do not curse or throw bad words at me!) :3
As for your phone, I believe the three main things to take into consideration are chip size, clock rate and the program being used. The CPU/GPU size (in nano-meters) will tell a lot about the kind of voltage would be required to run through it. The clock rate is fueled by voltage applied to the CPU/GPU. Lastly, the programs which tell the processor what to do will all play a role (and games on non-dedicated handhelds are ordered to be slightly less "important" in certain API; compared to core OS functions/modules). That's my summary of that stuff. :p
(At last check) The PS Vita uses a Samsung Soc design fabricated via an 45nm die. Programs for the device are low-level API (for its main systems SDK). Stuff like digital PSP games, PS Suite apps and, multimedia will likely use up less processing power.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4553/samsung-to-manufacture-ps-vita-cpu
The clock speed for the PS Vita is not known but, it will be well below 2Ghz and likely above 1Ghz. Oh and, there are four cores which enables more multi-threading/multi-tasking and require less applied voltage (to achieve a certain clock speed). =D
@Im The Singer in Symphony X:
I have glanced over a few posts by that user (while looking at PS Vita articles posted on DTOID) but, I am not that individual (or one of his or her online personas). Also, this is probably my second or third ever comment on a DTIOD article and I am just an average dude, not a Sony "inside scoop" person.
Uh, what else? I might answer another question. I am not sure how these comments work though (aside from the article dies out due to unpopularity in hits/comments). If this comment thread can close, do not PM me. I never respond to that stuff. NOW OR NEVER! :U
