Square Enix preparing NieR Tribute Album -echo- for Japan photo

Say what you will about NieR as a game, the soundtrack has been a hit among gamers as proven by the multiple industry awards and album sales it's received.  It seems as though Square Enix is still trying to catch up with fans' demand for more music from the game and is releasing an arrangement album called NieR Tribute Album -echo- in Japan on September 14th, 2011 for 2,100 Yen.

The original score was composed by the sound team at MoNACA, headed up by composer Keiichi Okabe, but it was vocalist Emi Evans's angelic voice and unique alien language created specifically for the soundtrack that earned the score so much attention.  Square Enix recently launched an official website dedicated to the new album which reveals the entire track list, the artists involved, and also lengthy samples of six of the album's twelve tracks.  This is shaping up to be one of our most anticipated albums of the remainder of 2011, so get ready to import this one!

Are you with the many fans who believe that the soundtrack for NieR was the best thing about the game?  Do you think a tribute album coming out this long after the game's intial release will still prove popular?

kinda wish they just stick to Nier Replicant instead of making Nier Gestalt just to suit westerners.

The music in this game is amazing, best of 2010 no doubt about it.
I really hope that Square-Enix try again with Nier. The story was great and they really could improve gameplay and graphics.

They already did catch up though. They released a second album, "15 Nightmares," a while ago with music from the DLC, piano tracks, and even 8-bit remixes.

A third album is definitely awesome news though! I'll be getting it.

True. I didn't care for the DLC music, but the arrangements were really nice. And the 8-bit remix on More SQ was amazing. In fact, there's an interview here (http://www.originalsoundversion.com/sdcc-2011-square-enix-music-interview-with-izumi-tsukushi-and-akio-shiraishi/) with the music staff of Square Enix Japan talking about how the popularity of that 8-bit remix was an inspiration for this album, and that there is yet another (4th) NieR album in the works!

Eh, I thought the story was more effective with a father than with a brother, if for no better reason than it was nice to have a JRPG that didn't feature a teenage protagonist.

they should just make a band and call it 'the nier band' or something and i would buy everything they put out.

not only is this soundtrack easily my favorite ost but it's also easily one of my favorite "albums" ever.

nier in its entirety was a beautiful work of art.

I agree. Nier is one of my favorite games this gen and that's largely because of how wonderful the father daugher dynamic to the story played out.

Besides, we got enough of the incest stuff from the Drakengard storyline.

Nier is one of my favourite games ever,so yeah...DO WANT! I hope this is easily available for download worldwide though :)

Also it has to be reiterated that Nier Gestalt (Western ver.) is the true version. Nier replicant (hence the name) was created to appease the Japanese audience, who will accept nothing less than a tortured bishounen youth as a protagonist. So yeah, old man Nier = True Nier!

Gestalt was the original one. Replicant was made because they felt that the Japanese would respond better to a younger lead.

Personally, I think the story only works with father Nier, and that brother Nier was only eye candy and didn't fit the story at all.

Cavia did NOT shut down after making NIER (thank GOD), they just got absorbed into Marvelous Entertainment, who merged into Acquire, so Cavia is still around and doing their thang, we just haven't heard from them in awhile.

Apologies, Cavia actually absorbed into Acquire (along with FeelPlus and Artoon), and were later merged into Marvelous - got that backwards. Point still stands, though, Cavia is still out there making... SOMETHING themselves - the merger was just like the Index merger that brought Atlus back into their parent company: Still independant but financially listed as part of Index/Marvelous for the shareholders.

I find it funny that people still think that Replicant is the original version. But those most likely the same people that complain about a game not including an audio track for a language they don't understand.

I am amazed that nobody has mentioned how much they hate the game yet. I'm not about to start. Love the game. Music was awesome as well. The intro was probably one of my favorite opening cinematics of all time.

If you ever played Replicant, you'd know it was the original. Some of the dialogue, actions, etc. just make more sense with Replicant than Gestalt.

Cavia said the older Nier was the original design. Brother Nier was only added because they thought Japan wouldn't like an older Nier. Also, if you've read the Grimoire Nier, you'd know that story wise Gestalt Nier (father) came before Gestalt Nier (brother). So either way, you're wrong. lololol

And I have played Replicant. Father/daughter story made more sense than brother/sister.

Keep in mind they are trying to "appeal" to the West. Saying the West version was the original gives it more appeal to the West in my opinion.

Also, yes I actually own Grimoire Nier. Were you able to understand any of it, or did you just look at the pretty pictures? In Grimoire Neir it says "In “NieR Gestalt”, he is thirty-eight (the story takes place in A.D. 3361), and Yonah is his daughter. In the planning stages, “the story of siblings” was the only idea, but taking into account the different markets for the platforms, “the story of a sturdy father fighting to protect her daughter” was born."

To me both stories make sense and I wasn't simply referring to the relationship between Neir and Yonah that made more sense in Replicant. I was referring to the dialogue choices, actions, etc. I can provide more reasons that Replicant is clearly the original.

@Barrit

Nier was always a father, dating back to before the game's release and even to the earliest pre-alpha screenshots. Most of the development team, including Saito, wanted the father, and a minority, including Yokoo, wanted the brother.

Story wise, father and brother were interchangeable because of the the whole repeating world thing. What I was saying was that the story had more weight because it was a father daughter relationship rather than your generic anime/manga influenced brother/sister orphan deal. It just made more sense, when considering the kind of world they are living in, to have the main character an older more grizzled warrior rather than a kid. If you thought the brother sister angle was better fine, I don't really care, I just thought the whole Nier as a brother was too shallow. (and yes, I know they both have pretty much the exact same dialogue.) I personally preferred the story of a father, because as I said, it just carried more weight, also, father Nier's interactions with Weiss was much more entertaining because they had a more equal footing, where as the brother just came off as a kid being lectured by Weiss.

The only reason I've seen to possibly prefer Replicant over Gestalt is Kaine's relationship with Nier, and a preference for the younger character model.

I guess I'll add more information. First of all, what I already said about "Grimoire Nier" above is proof enough, but there was also an interview with the creator's: Director - Yoko Taro, Scenario Writer - Sawako Natori, and Novelist - Jun Eishima. It is a very long interview and they joke about young Nier prostituting himself for money, going into a little bit of detail about how Emil and Kaine both like Nier, but saying they didn't want to put too much emphasis on any of that because "'An older brother saving his sister' was the main theme we wanted to portray". It also included a part about them going into further detail about the meeting with Square-Enix USA asking them to just go with Gestalt.

Yoko: We somehow made it possible to release both “Replicant” and “Gestalt” at the same time, but there was a time when “Replicant” almost got called off.

Square Enix Promotion Staff: Something like that did happen.

Yoko: It took approximately 3 years for development, but during that time we were called to a meeting with America’s Square Enix to give a brief report on the game and its progress. Back then, we planned to release the two games earlier, so we were on a tight schedule. When we realized that during the meeting, those higher ups just reasoned “Can’t we just go with “Gestalt”? We could live with not releasing a special version in Japan, can’t we?” in english. (laughs)

-And what happened after that?

Yoko: The producer Satou, who was sitting by my side, just sort of looked at me with a “…what do we do now?” face, and I just stuck to my opinion that I really didn’t want this. (laughs) If we can’t make “Replicant”, our development team’s motivation will go down like crazy, and as a result even “Gestalt” will be released later!? Are
you okay with that!? Is what I threatened them with.

Square Enix Promotion Staff: That was pretty selfish.

Yoko: We planned to make a sibling story in the first place. Although back then “Replicant” was to be voiced in English, but there was some trouble with the voice actors.

Eishima: Now that’s news to me! If “Replicant” had English voices with subtitles, it might not have become such a topic of discussion.

Yoko: Then producer Satou said “Let’s just do it with Japanese voices” at the last moment on a whim…maybe it was a wise decision.(laughs) So he adjusted the voice actors.
-------
Of course, people will believe what they want to believe. As far as the story "carrying more weight", I wasn't trying to argue which carried more weight at all, since that is just preference.

I read a translation of that interview, and they were only interested in Replicant. By your own argument, they were trying to "appeal" to Japan and ignoring Gestalt.

Anyways, Gestalt was in production before Replicant, and it was an xbox exclusive. When they decided to also release it on PS3 they created the younger lead that Yoko wanted. This right here is the core of the argument. Ignoring lore, and preferences, Gestalt came before Replicant.

Regarding my immense dislike of Replicant, I remember Yoko saying something about it being a role playing game, so the protagonist had to be a young boy. Which in my opinion is utter bullshit. If you want a young lead, do it for story not convention.

Whatever, I don't want to talk about this anymore. I'm probably making this too personal since Nier was my favorite game of 2010 and it really bothers me that not enough people gave it a chance.

I got nothing but praise for that game. Best tragic story in a game I've played in years. I say that knowing fully well the game had issues but the story more than made up for it's short comings.

-A little off the subject-
I made the mistake buying the DLC for this game after I finished all 4 endings >_<. Anyone that has finished this game with all 4 endings knows what that means...

Enough back and forth about the versions. Both have their appeal to me. In Replicant, it's really much more of a growing, harrowing experience for young Nier whereas Gestalt seems to have a lot more passion for me. An older man with the kind of life he leads and those motivations just seems like a lot more of an interesting tale to tell. Besides, with Drakengard and Gestalt, I'd say Taro Yoko is definitely one of the better dudes at making out of the norm RPG protags.

Anywho, I'm excited as hell for this album. Funnily enough, was just listening to the Drakengard/Nier OSTs.
