Square Enix partners with Gas Powered Games photo

Square Enix announced today a partnership with Gas Powered Games, marking the first time the Japanese company has struck up a deal with a firm outside Japan. We've heard that Square Enix planned to expand west lately, and this seems to be their first step.

Gas Powered Games is best known for their Dungeon Siege RPG series, and now they'll be put to work on the sequel to the real-time strategy Supreme Commander for Square Enix.

“This strategic partnership represents one of the first steps Square Enix ... are taking towards their goal of increasing Western development efforts aimed for the global markets,” the company said in a released statement. "Additionally, Square Enix's foray into the real-time strategy genre is a significant expansion of its product lineup.”

After this interesting first step, we wonder who Square Enix will partner with next.

With the noted 1000% increase in androgynous males to Supreme Commander 2... Oh. My. God. Supreme Commander was already noted for its ridiculously high system requirements. But now with all the units sporting spiky hair and gigantic swords? It's a polygon-related disaster waiting to happen. Gas Powered, remember, I like to play games that can get better than a 3-4 FPS, so keep the Omnislashes to a minimum, please.

Supreme Commanders will now have to go emo for 20 minutes before detonating in a ball of fire that takes out the screen.

Destructoid, I'm getting tired of these relevant, ridiculously not-witty-at-all pictures.

LOL at all the comments, you guys beat me too it. Square character design meets RTS? I can't wait to see how messed up this can get. We'll see I guess. Who knows how much they put their influence on to it. This could lead to really good things. RTS/RPG, maybe? Please??

They are publishing it, the same guys who made the last one will still be making this one. I doubt you'll see any square type influence in this one, besides their logo on the box (probably going to drive more sales this way).

I cant see SE having a huge influence over this series. If they can convince Chris Taylor that its worth taking more time in balancing to make each army more interesting and less pretty much the same, thats good enough for me.
