First Square Enix snaps up Tomb Raider's daddy, Eidos. And now they could be looking to buy up another games company.
Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada told the Financial Times that he may not be done shopping yet. And he may continue looking west after picking up Eidos.
“The combination of Eidos and Square Enix gives us a good platform from which to expand. In that process, we might decide to acquire another company,” Mr Wada said.
He gives no other indication of what they might be looking to snap up in the future, though. But comments he has made here and in other places has us believing that he'd rather have western companies than Japanese ones. This statement is also good evidence to that:
“In the last five to 10 years, the Japanese games industry has become a closed environment, with no new people coming in, no new ideas, almost xenophobic. It is now slightly behind western counterparts.”
While no specific company pops to mind, one commenter, Aritas, on an Edge article has a good idea:
How about they acquire people who can make a main series Final Fantasy game within a reasonable time frame.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Yeah, seriously. I think they should release a new one every year, kind of like EA with the Madden games! Just think about it... we could have Final Fantasy 2010, 2011, etc. Great idea or best idea? I'd have to say the latter!
WHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? It made me traumatized with RPGs , I only got to touch another one 2 weeks ago with P4 , the story is uninteresting , the combat is confusing , they have a furry character , the main protagonist is copy pasta from the 10 one ,THE COMBAT IS AWFULL ,the enviroments are estremely boring , the combat is terrible ...
Its like dealing with the freakin hydra here, chop one head off and two more (activison, square) take its place.
Square looking to go dev shopping again? That's a surprise, but a good thing. Whatever you do, don't buy Midway.
If it were me, I'd buy Valve or Epic (most likely the latter. Both have a huge amount of talent, have great ties with their communities, which is great for breeding tomorrows talent. This is just what Square Enix need.
NIS
Tri-Ace
or any company that thinks European players hibernate every other year.
or any company that thinks JRPG fans are an average 2 per per country.
I agree on one point though, the story was delivered pretty badly.
Jrpgs there are plenty of, but Square need to learn how to make other genres of game. Most of us play/buy action games, and they surely sell more than jrpgs. When Sqaure can make something like Assassin's Creed or Bioshock, besides mega andro hype machine FF games, then they'll earn my respect again.
Go west, Square.
You shut your mouth right now, just the thought of Square owning Atlus and shitting them up fills me with dread.
You might want see this sitting down :

I believe there is team disputes in that they can't reassemble the original team together. For example some of the team is too busy with FF XI. At least that's what I've been told.
