Square Enix looking into DLC for Final Fantasy XIII photo

Final Fantasy XIII is almost upon its Japanese release date after six years, and Square "eyes bigger than its belly" Enix is already pondering the prospect of delicious downloadable content for its long-awaited RPG. If any DLC does arrive, there would be no story expansions, with producer Yoshinori Kitase stressing that anything added would be gameplay only.

"We are exploring the option of downloadable content, perhaps adding new areas, items or enemies, but these would not be expansions to the story, only the gameplay," he explains. "The entire story of FFXIII will be on the disc."

That's great. However, perhaps the team needs to finish work on Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII first before thinking about downloadable content. Just an idea.

Can they finish the game first before they entertain the thought of milking us.

DLC for a JRPG? Now I've literally heard it all.

100+ hours isn't enough, Square?

@Mag: just look at Lost Odyssey; the precedent is there.

Personally, I think they should just make Final Fantasy XIII, get it released, and be done with it. This has gone on long enough.

...OR! they could spam the DLC on PSN from time to time like Cross Edge does in a "buy our game!" sort of fashion. Wait, it's Final Fantasy XIII. That won't be a problem.

Sorry, Squeenix, but no thanks.

Jim's right, they need to finish this shit up and be done with it. Get some FFXIII devs afterward to work on Versus and Agito. I want those damn games now! *angry face*

If I had to guess, I'd say:

Every Ultimate Weapon from 1-12, different stats and all. $1 each.

Extra dungeons with either any, all, or new Weapons (Omega, Atma, Emerald, etc) as bosses. Or a dungeon full of old school monsters and bosses.

If the DLC is the entire game redone in 16 bit style ala FFVI I would totally buy it.

I'm not against it. As long as it's something worth purchasing and not along the lines of the wackness that was Tales Of Vesperia's DLC. (Purchase more gald! Purchase more ingredients/synthesis materials! Lame.)

First DLC is the Materia System. Second DLC is the Junction System. Third DLC is Triple Triad. Imagine the possibilities, guys!

DLC? Really? For what some say is to be the biggest game ever? No thanks. Finish your game first before thinking about DLC you greedy bastards.

I'm increasingly becoming less and less interested in final fantasy XIII. The fact that square hasn't finished the other games in the fabula moronica crystalis (while still announcing XIV) isn't helping.

I think it could be interesting. I mean if we jump on and say LOLMG DLC WTF?! there's nothing really creative we can derive from it.

But thinking on the japanese exclusive versions of the past titles like the Zodiac Job System version of XII, Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, FFX International and FFX-2: Last Mission, I think that's incredibly exciting as a prospect for DLC. I'd certainly have paid an extra £/$5 to play through XII again with a class system instead of the old license board.

I'm just tired of the old 'Bah, why're they planning DLC so long before the game!' arguement. I don't think I've ever read an article detailing the entire creation of a piece of DLC, from first ideas to completion. Maybe the fact that the entire development process is shrouded in secrecy is one of the reasons we're really apprehensive about it.

@neon6

But.. it's finished. Doesn't it come out in a couple of months in Japan?

Whoever thought of DLC should be shot. Never after finishing a genuinally good game did I think "wow this is great, but I really want another 30 minutes of gameplay that will cost me £10".

Online is both a gift and a curse.
