Need a new television? The folks at Square Enix think you do. They don't want their masterpiece being played on that busted old standard definition set you got at a garage sale. It's like getting a beautifully prepared New York strip steak and topping it with ketchup and eating it with a plastic spork.
Square Enix went as far as to create a guide for television buyers, laying out their picks for what sets their game would look best on. There's four categories to pick from as far as their recommendations go. From the top, after the primer on high-definition, is High Cost/Peformance, Standard, PC Monitor, and High End types. To check out their guide (in Japanese), hit up the Special section of the FFXIII webpage.
Sony's Bravia, Sharp's Aquos, Panasonic Viera and Toshiba's Regza are all fantastic Japanese televisions. Couldn't go wrong with any, really, as long as you're getting 1080p and something that can display solid blacks and has even backlighting. Funny, they didn't recommend the Korean powerhouse, Samsung. I'd avoid the LED TVs unless you want glare-o-vision, or live in a cave. Their other TVs are fine, though.
In Japan, I played Final Fantasy XIII on Sony's KDL-W5 series. It looked fantastic, especially in the Blu ray sequences. At home, when the game finally comes here, I'm going to play it on a Sony Bravia 52" XBR9. What are you going to play Final Fantasy XIII on?
Olevia makes some amazing televisions.
Damn you Dale North.
That said I'll probably also play it on the downstairs 37" set. Huzzah!
Also, calibrations, I has them :p
Which is nice, because it matches my tiny apartment. Cozy, comfortable, gaming bliss.
I was by no means basing my tv or the brand; I sold a 27" vizio to be able to afford it. The thing plays Beatles: Rock Band wonderfully.
Gonna be sick. :,)
50" Panasonic Viera 1080p Plasma 600hz
The thing is beastly and awesome. (The largest TV I owned prior was 32") Got it for 800 bucks at Best Buy's Cyber Monday deal.
I was going to go with a 52" but it didn't fit the entertainment stand...lol
Should I buy new furniture to buy a new TV to buy Final Fantasy 13? Hell yeah. lol.
I don't have the money for a fancy TV at the moment. :<
seriously, way too much epeen in this comment section. i'm getting stabbed in the face by multiple flacid penis's. I must abort, quickly.
Oh, and they are calibrated. Did it the day I got them. You TV's are meaningless to me unless they are calibrated to the ISF stanards.
Dale, personally I like OLEDs better than LCDs. To me LCDs are nothing more than a smear-o-thon.
IMO - LCD < Plasma < OLED < DLP < Projection (if you have the right room for it}
You do have to go to Sony's Forum and calibrate it so it will look it's best. On my TV the custom setting totally rocks!
Sony still makes the best TV's the XBR's are the best anything else isn't worth the money. It's too bad mine is a bit older and has only 3 HDMI ports
They've pumped up the new XBR's quite a bit, way better contrast ratios in the new XBR's.
Of course I will get FF XIII for my PS3!
If you can budget yourself, I would suggest you get a Best Buy card and get a great TV. I got my 52" for $2000 with stand, and I paid $100 a month for 20 months. No interest for 2 years, hells ya. Of course, the kiddies that are under the age of 18 cant do it.
Things look shiny and awesome. :)
I sell tvs in the Home Theater department of Best Buy, and I think it is funny that they didn't mention either Samsung or LG, to leaders in LCD technology.
@ Dale-
a 52" XBR9 is amazing, I envy you...240 hz and 100,000:1 contrast ratio, right? The XBR9 is amazing. I do disagree about LED, I don't see the glare you mentioned, I believe they're way better backlit and have better colors than aything I've seen in an LCD. The Samsung 8000 model LED is insane, 240 hz and 5 mil:1 contrast ratio....best picture I've ever seen on a tv period. there was an associate that did believe the XBR9 was better than LED, though.
