Square Enix launches a Final Fantasy XIII TV buying guide photo

Need a new television? The folks at Square Enix think you do. They don't want their masterpiece being played on that busted old standard definition set you got at a garage sale. It's like getting a beautifully prepared New York strip steak and topping it with ketchup and eating it with a plastic spork.

Square Enix went as far as to create a guide for television buyers, laying out their picks for what sets their game would look best on. There's four categories to pick from as far as their recommendations go. From the top, after the primer on high-definition, is High Cost/Peformance, Standard, PC Monitor, and High End types. To check out their guide (in Japanese), hit up the Special section of the FFXIII webpage.

Sony's Bravia, Sharp's Aquos, Panasonic Viera and Toshiba's Regza are all fantastic Japanese televisions. Couldn't go wrong with any, really, as long as you're getting 1080p and something that can display solid blacks and has even backlighting. Funny, they didn't recommend the Korean powerhouse, Samsung. I'd avoid the LED TVs unless you want glare-o-vision, or live in a cave. Their other TVs are fine, though.

In Japan, I played Final Fantasy XIII on Sony's KDL-W5 series. It looked fantastic, especially in the Blu ray sequences. At home, when the game finally comes here, I'm going to play it on a Sony Bravia 52" XBR9. What are you going to play Final Fantasy XIII on?

I have an old 37" HD Olivia that only cost me $300. It only goes up to 720p, but honestly you can't see the difference on a tv smaller then 40" so...

A 32" Vizio 1080p. It's been a pretty damn good TV so far, especially for 500 bucks. Seeing as how it also fit my tax refund and TV space budget to the tee.

I'll be playing it on my PC Monitor, a 22.1" 1080p affair that cost me, new, the grand sum of £90 a year and a half ago.

That said I'll probably also play it on the downstairs 37" set. Huzzah!

I'll be playing it on my 21" Vizio in 1080p -- which makes absolutely 0 difference because I'll be playing in on my 360 and because my TV is tiny.

Which is nice, because it matches my tiny apartment. Cozy, comfortable, gaming bliss.

32" Sharp Aquos 720P/1080i here.... bought it a mere week after getting my Xbox360, so my budget was a little tight by then (it was all due to Dead Rising and its awful tiny texts), but it was well worth it.

I was by no means basing my tv or the brand; I sold a 27" vizio to be able to afford it. The thing plays Beatles: Rock Band wonderfully.

I still have a preference for Samsung and LG LCDs. I'll be playing on a 32" 1080i Samsung, which I think is pretty damn nice for a college TV.

Funny you should ask, I just got my new TV on Monday!

50" Panasonic Viera 1080p Plasma 600hz

The thing is beastly and awesome. (The largest TV I owned prior was 32") Got it for 800 bucks at Best Buy's Cyber Monday deal.

I will be playing on my 46" Samsung 1080p, 120hz LCD TV. Top of the line from almost 2 years back.

I was going to go with a 52" but it didn't fit the entertainment stand...lol

I got a 27" Viewsonic LCD back when they costed substantially more. I'd like to upgrade to a 1080p one someday (I just got 720p/1080i on mine), but I frankly don't have any furniture or space that could support such a 40"+ screen. :-S

Should I buy new furniture to buy a new TV to buy Final Fantasy 13? Hell yeah. lol.

61" samsung 1080p dlp. Love this thing, and dlp is great for a finished basement like mine. Wouldn't recommend it in a room with natural light, but if its dark, can't go wrong. Lots of extra size for less money.

23" Acer Monitor @1080p. That monitor serves my PC/PS3/XBox 360 gaming until I get my 56" Toshiba DLP back.

Oh, and they are calibrated. Did it the day I got them. You TV's are meaningless to me unless they are calibrated to the ISF stanards.

Dale, personally I like OLEDs better than LCDs. To me LCDs are nothing more than a smear-o-thon.
IMO - LCD < Plasma < OLED < DLP < Projection (if you have the right room for it}

I'll be playing it on my Sony Bravia XBR4! 52" of Awesome!
You do have to go to Sony's Forum and calibrate it so it will look it's best. On my TV the custom setting totally rocks!
Sony still makes the best TV's the XBR's are the best anything else isn't worth the money. It's too bad mine is a bit older and has only 3 HDMI ports
They've pumped up the new XBR's quite a bit, way better contrast ratios in the new XBR's.
Of course I will get FF XIII for my PS3!

@runtheplacered : I think console gamers are proud of their TV because it's the only one thing that differentiates one from the next. Like kids wearing more expensive clothes and shoes to school, if you will. I'm nevertheless envious of people with the space and money to put those huge screens in their homes! "Work Work", I guess.

If you can budget yourself, I would suggest you get a Best Buy card and get a great TV. I got my 52" for $2000 with stand, and I paid $100 a month for 20 months. No interest for 2 years, hells ya. Of course, the kiddies that are under the age of 18 cant do it.

42" LCD, I think it's a Westinghouse - not the best screen quality out there, but the monster amount of inputs on the back means I can plug just about everything into it - 3 HDMIs, component, composite, SVGA, svideo, the works.

I'll be playing on my 27" Sanyo 480p tube!!!!!

I sell tvs in the Home Theater department of Best Buy, and I think it is funny that they didn't mention either Samsung or LG, to leaders in LCD technology.

@ Dale-
a 52" XBR9 is amazing, I envy you...240 hz and 100,000:1 contrast ratio, right? The XBR9 is amazing. I do disagree about LED, I don't see the glare you mentioned, I believe they're way better backlit and have better colors than aything I've seen in an LCD. The Samsung 8000 model LED is insane, 240 hz and 5 mil:1 contrast ratio....best picture I've ever seen on a tv period. there was an associate that did believe the XBR9 was better than LED, though.

I have been thinking of going HD soon, but issues of lag have kept me worried. I know that with modern systems that output in HD it's not that much an issue, but older systems can lag. I also seen current generation systems lag as well. Still trying to figure out my options.
