Square Enix hops on the Steam train photo

Steam is the future, baby. And today they've announced that Square Enix has joined the huge list of companies to distribute their games on the download service.

A Headcrab and a Malboro did a high five when it was announced that Valve and Square Enix have teamed up for software distribution. The first PC game to kick things off for Square Enix on Steam is The Last Remnant, the RPG that was released on the Xbox 360 some time back. Pricing will be announced later. Square Enix will announce more titles in the future.

"We are excited to offer the millions of Steam customers online access to Square Enix titles beginning with our major action RPG, The Last Remnant," said John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Inc. and Square Enix Ltd.

"Square Enix is committed to delivering the best quality titles to PC gamers and distribution on Steam is one of the many steps we are taking to increase accessibility for fans in North America and PAL territories."

Let's see, what else could they release? Hey, that reminds me of an old game: did any of you buy Final Fantasy VII on the PC? I did...just because.

I hope they add FF8 on Steam, I always wanted to play that game to completion, but my disc 3 got irreparably scratched. :(

I played the PC demo for FF7, but I never actually got it. I think it's partially because I saw a friend play through most of just before it came out for PC, and I got a PSX (and FF7 for it) soon after it came out for PC.

I did play FF7 on the PC, or rather I sat there and watched my cousin play it. We had it on the PS1 as well, don't know why we played it on the PC instead, we were weird kids back then.

Too bad The Last Remnant sucks ass.

Still, this deal could be good in the end for fans of JRPGs who prefer the PC.

Wait, does that demographic even exist?

Makes sense. Limiting their software to a single console isn't the smartest thing to do right now. Opening up to multiplatforms and a wider audience should equal revenue. Can't wait to buy FF7 for pc.

Again.

But steam'd!

like my rice.

hopefully they make it compatible.

if not there are other titles I missed over the years.

Awesome. Now only if Blizzard joined Steam...

Steam is just a delivery method with basic DRM involved. Any game that has an actual problem is not the responsibility of Steam unless it deals with said deployment or DRM. If a game just sucks on a PC, that has nothing to do with Steam.

I wouldn't mind giving Last Remnant a shot, despite its not-so-stellar reviews. I've been holding out for the PS3 version, but some seriously large feet are being dragged on that port. My PC is basically just a crazy-powerful communications device at this point in time, until WoW's undertow sucks me under.

It's nice to know the PC version is coming on Steam, but I just have to wonder as to the status of the PS3 port.

Of course, unless the performance issues are completely addressed somehow on the PS3 port, I'd buy it on Steam, if at all, but I'm curious as to why SquEnix is dragging its feet so heavily.

I gotta say, that's pretty awesome. Even if I don't have a computer that could come close to supporting any newer games.

And I, too, had a flashback moment of begging my parents for FFVII on the PC. I badgered the crap out of them to get it for me every time we went into an EB. Sadly, I never got it and didn't get to play the game all the way through until about three years ago. T__T

This is indeed happy news. But unfortunately I have no interest in The Last Remnant, and still have access to all the Final Fantasies in other ways.

Sadly enough, the pc version of FFVII was the first FF game I played. I hope this means a pc version of FF13 is in the works.

Last Remnant is f*ing awesome. I didn't experience the slowdown as I installed it from the get go. And the combat in there is simply awesome.

I totally bought Seven on PC. I remember it playing much slower than the PS version. Good times.

Maybe this'll encourage Square (and Enix) to re-release some older games like Live-A-Live, in english.

I had FF7 for PC back in the day, I got it for christmas before I had a PS1. Sadly my father and I couldn't get it to install properly and I never got to play it until I got it for playstation a couple years later. I still have the PC discs and the box they came in.

I'm playing FF7 on PC right now. The graphics aren't what I'd call beautiful, but it runs perfectly for me. I do wish they'd port FF9, 10, and 12 to PC though.

Most likely Square will port Final Fantasy 11 to Steam. From a business standpoint, it seems smart (lots of people, huge accessibility, etc.).

On one hand, I'm all for Steam expanding its stock of game genres. On the other hand, I have yet to play a good JRPG.

I guess at least when a good one DOES finally come out, there's a possibility it will be PC-playable this way.

Oh, big deal, Last Remnant on Steam! oooh, ahhh. That piece of crap was terrible. But, oh, now I don't have to go to the store to buy a crappy game. Thanks Square Enix!
