Square Enix goes scary with upcoming DS title The Game With No Name photo

I certainly don't rely on Square-Enix for my dose of creepy, but if they can execute their successful formula within a new genre, we may have something to get excited about here. The recently announced game is called Geemu no Nanatsu DS (The Game With No Name) and will come out in Japan on July 3rd. I'm honestly not so sure we can expect this title to make it to the states, as horror games are more popular in Japan than they are here, but since there are few portable horror titles on the American market I think it would certainly be welcome.

All we know about the premise is that it was clearly written by a fan of Hideo Nakata's superlative Japanese film Ringu (remade in America as The Ring): anyone who plays the game will die a week after doing so. I find myself a little reserved about this part of it as Japan is also responsible for an onslaught of poor J-horror films due to the success of Ringu, so I'm hoping that Square can do more with this title than just the usual copycat.

What is exciting is that the game is said to mimic the DS menu, sending you unexpected messages and likely scaring the bejesus out of you. I love this concept; not since Eternal Darkness (Sanity Meter FTW!) have I seen another game successfully execute it though. We'll bring you more on this mysterious title as it comes to light, but I for one would be thrilled to see more games of this type come out (in the meantime, I'll just keep replaying the Fatal Frame series.)

[Via Nintendic -- Thanks Jonathan]

Ooooh even the title makes it seem like it'll mess with your head pretty baadly.

A game that makes your DS seem possessed sounds all kinds of cool. Let's hope it makes it our way...

I'm more interested with what is happening with that Dragon Warrior image in the top right corner...

It would be great if, after playing the game, people's faces warp into this:

Ugh. I hate the derivative state of Japanese horror ever since Ringu came out. Personally, I've turned to Spain for high quality foreign-made horror now. [Rec] was the best horror I've seen in years.
Plus the lead actress? Total fucking hottie.

The World Ends With You, The Game With No Name. I am very impressed with the Really long and non-sequitarian names that Square is slapping on their DS games lately.

And big hearts for The World Ends With You so far (I haven't had much time to play it yet, though. But so far it's awesome incarnate). Please tell me someone's working on the review for it as we speak.

@rabidkeebler Same here. Hell, I was an ass-hair away from skipping over the entire article (Japanese horror = yaaaawn) but there was some awesome Dragon Warrior deliciocity that piqued my interest. Say, if anybody here can throw down some translation kung-fu, I'd like to know what's being said about DW in that corner.

That would be Na Nashi no Game. Shi and tsu do look a little alike, but Japanese does read from right to left.

great! I love horror-games on the DS, I was playing Dementium The Ward the other day while waiting for the bus in the middle of the night and suddenly someboday sat down next to me and I almost jumped against the roof of the bus-stall :-)

Odd. First we have "The World Ends With You" (A Wonderful World in Japan, but meh), now "The Game With No Name".

Eternal Darkness was a great game from back in the day, so I think this game has great potential in the US. We get so few games that stray from the basic innovations, that, if it's as good as it seems like it may be, it could boost potential for other great un-imported games to make it to our shores.

I'm feeling good things from this game. (And bejeezus-scaring is possibly one of the most amuzing things to keep me awake at night.)
