It's also a bit of a shame "Enix" has their name plastered over things like the new Chrono Trigger DS remake, and the like. They didn't even develop the early Dragon Quest games - they just published them!
Well, appart from DragonQuest, what Enix franchises have they worked on lately?
They had such a huge selection of games on the 16bit era. Now they're kind of, gone.
And, oh, what about front mission... WIll it go back to being Front Mission?
I have high hopes, they'll probably be crushed anyway...
like someone else said, changing the name isn't gonna get your talent back
Nothing too recent comes to mind, but last year (maybe the year before last) they had Star Ocean 4 and Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume.
And now the only thing of note Square has released these days even close to that development approach was The World Ends With You. In 2007. Square is simply PA-THETIC.
Square was on the decline well before the merger. Legend of Mana wasn't liked as much as Secret of Mana or the Japanese exclusive Seiken Densetsu 3 (from the general consensus I've gathered. I hated Legend of Mana). The Final Fantasy series started to decline. What was infuriating about the merger was that most of Enix's franchises disappeared, save DQ, Star Ocean and to a lesser extent, Valkyrie Profile. Don't blame Enix for Square's decline, and as an Enix fan it would be sad to hear that they drop that name.
PS: I hate it when people call Square Enix just "Square." I wrote a c-blog about that years ago
First would be what Dale said, they're more then just Square and Enix now.
Second, no one really calls them by any semblance of their full name unless its to call them "Squeenix", which is an ugly nickname that I can't imagine they like. Also the acronym SE can be construed as Sony Entertainment, which is too much overlap I'd suppose.
And finally theres would be a much deeper reason.. Now, I'm positive this isn't going to be a popular thought with a lot of people but think about it, all of their problems started at or around the time they officially merged with Enix in 2003. Of course, picking up certain games (mostly Dragon Quest) has been great for them, but otherwise it just feels like everything's been "meh" at best since they've fused the names together. People kinda still do speak higher of "just Square" they they do Square Enix, so I'd say re-branding is an attempt to maybe purge those ill thoughts and go back to basics for the company.
I hate to see Enix finally go (or really just fade out), but I can't say I'm shocked Square would do this.
Has to be one of the most weird RPGs I ever played back then. I liked it a lot, actually.
Valkyrie Profile 3: Hrist (COME ON!!! Make it already!)
A tactical-rpg Front Mission, as it should be.
A real Mana game, old school style, even if it's only a downloadable title.
And I have some small, small, small hope to see a main Final Fantasy title that won't be all about extra superfluous belts, pretty hair and useless summons...
(Actually, given their current thinking, I'm surprised they didn't change the company name to Square Enix Eidos Duodecim 347.45/6. Maybe this is a positive sign!)
For the love of god.
Comment of the week! Haha
But you forgot Dream Drop Versus Crystal Theatre Sleep
BoomingEchoes: After Enix rescued their ass out of the fire following Final Fantasy the movie? Pffft. The problem is how long Enix took between main series DQ games. The quality of the DQ series hasn't gone down. Nor have any of the other Enix brands. Square games have taken a complete shit since FFX and The Bouncer. Probably since it takes them so long to make a main series FF game any more.
Did anyone from Enix other than Yuji Horii work on Chrono Trigger? Also, wasn't he freelance, and not associated with Enix?
It would help to get Wada out of there though.
I think you may be a bit confused about Enix - They have never developed a game fully in-house. They had a few key programmers and staff that worked at Enix, but the majority of each and every game was outsourced. I don't know what this business is you speak of with them not developing "the early" DQ games; ChunSoft developed the first five, Heartbeat developed the sixth, Heartbeat & ArtePiazza developed the seventh, and Level 5 developed the eighth and ninth games in the series. The stories are always written by Yuji Horii, the art is always done by Akira Toriyama, and the music is always done by Koichi Sugiyama.
Everything else they made was merely published, as far as I know.
But why was that a bad thing? Enix was a great publisher that brought us some great games, and Quintet had a very strong working relationship with them through the 90s.
Why all the hate? You make them sound like a group of greasy turds.
EA's been publishing a slew of great games lately - are they bad for it?
And let it never be forgotten that the upcoming success Deus Ex: Human Revolution is Eidos Montreal's game at core. I'll be pissed if squeenix gets all the credit! (Yes, I'm proud of my city)
