Hot off its failed attempt to acquire Tecmo, Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix seems determined to be the Japanese EA and get some companies under its belt. It would appear that the company is now after British publisher Eidos, despite Warner Brothers being the most likely candidate for the job.
MCV claims that both WB and Squeenix are about to mount rival bids for the house of Tomb Raider. With WB already owning 20% of the company, and recently permitted to buy more shares, Square would have a bit of trouble wresting control. Not only that, but Ubisoft and Electronic Arts are also tipped as potential acquirers.
Square Enix's interest, however, seems to be quite strong. President Yoichi Wada visited Eidos' IO Studio recently, and is said to be heading to the UK soon. "I think Warners will still win, but it’s very interesting that Square have expressed this late interest," claims an anonymous source. "They are clearly looking for Western talent."
Square Enix is definitely interested in Western expansion, that much is clear. However, I think it could probably do a bit better.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Not to do with anything you said here BUT....
Whatever happened to the kid who ran away from his parents cuz they wouldn't let him play COD4. You said they found a childs body but the article said they didnt positive ID him. I was wondering how he died... yada yada yada....
I know you posted that article like 3 weeks ago or so, but I'd figure you might have gotten an update.
P.S. If you make a new updated post.. can you shout me out!! YEAH!!! nothing like getting a shoutout after hearing the outcome of a kids death. Man I am morbid.

Squeenix's forray into the bidding war is interesting, to say the least. Needless to say, I have been very disappointed with how Square has been handling the current generation. They've put out some very top-notch handheld software, but their console work has not impressed me at all. Final Fantasy XIII has a tentative release window at best, games like the Last Remnant have been very disappointing. Square's transition from a Playstation-focus developer to an Xbox-focused developer has not gone over very well, partially because the change came so late. (Hey Square, remember when you said your support would chose the winner of the console war? MAYBE YOU SHOULD HAVE ACTUALLY RELEASED SOMETHING!) I'm not really sure if buying Eidos would help Square, or simply hurt Eidos. I think Temco would have been a much better acquisition for them, but sadly, it's too late for that now.
Or in a completely opposite twist of fate, we could see a lot of Eidos IP based movies...
Hopefully this makes some sweet stuff happen on both sides of the sea because both companies have been rather lazy as of late. I think for Square-Enix it's been because of Final Fantasy XIII though and Eidos because of the changing of times.
