Square Enix buddy up with manga mag V Jump for Project V photo

Unless you're a manga fanatic, you may not have heard of Japanese magazine V Jump, but if you're a Square Enix fan you're sure to remember them after today. It seems that a mention popped up in their pages of a new game project with the king of RPGs. The excerpt follows:

"Square Enix [and V Jump] begin 'Project V', which will create a next-generation blockbuster! Perhaps your ideas will become reality?!".

Considering that Square has its fingers in many pies, there is no proof that this means there is a game on the way, considering that they also publish some anime series (such as the recent Kuroshitsuji). It would be really cool if it was a game though. I'm unfamiliar withthe unique characters of the Jump universe -- anyone have any ideas about what this might be?

I'm going to say some sort of crossover title is almost an inevitability. It could be interesting and fun to see Dragon Ball characters interact with One Piece characters in some sort of light-hearted RPG. I believe that (and going from the cards on the flyer above) that V Jump also has it's mits in Yu-Gi-Oh. I'm a bit befuddled how that may play into things with Squeenix, however, seeing as that's a Konami property.

Teaming with shonen jump would have been nicer, Bleach and Naruto vs FF and Secret of Mana? HELL YES! though i think there's a shonen game already for the DS.

Isn't Shonen Jump the American version of Jump? I could totally be mistaken. I was thinking Kindom Heart like game where you travel through different mangas .. I would defin get it :)

There are already two Shonen Jump games for the DS, though they are Japan-only and will likely stay that way. Jump Super Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars, if you are looking to import go for Jump Ultimate Stars as it has a much larger cast and better gameplay. It's basically a SSBM type of game with all your favorite anime characters. Not sure what the square enix project is about though.

I agreed. Although I got the first one when it came out, but never got the second one. Really enjoyed the game but my friends didn't have the game so I didn't really have anyone to play with

To clear things up, Weekly Shonen Jump is the magazine that Jump Super/Ultimate Stars pulled its characters from and the place where all the most popular shonen anime (like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, and Dragonball) were originally serialized. This has been brought to the US as a monthly magazine under the name Shonen Jump, with a much more limited scope on several series instead of more than a dozen at once.

What V Jump is is another magazine from the same publisher of Weekly Shonen Jump, with a focus on video games and more game-related manga. It has been home to a few Yu-gi-oh spinoff manga (the main series was serialized in Shonen Jump), a few Digimon manga, a Viewtiful Joe manga, Slime MoriMori (from Dragon Quest), and other stuff of that nature. So basically, don't get excited for Naruto and Luffy to be fighting Cloud and Tidus, because those characters are outside the scope of V Jump.

Interestingly enough, I'm always curious about why Square Enix participates with Weekly Shonen Jump and V Jump, seeing as they actually own their own manga imprint, Shonen Gangan and its related magazines, in which they've serialized stuff like Full Metal Alchemist and Soul Eater. Guess they just like to work with the most popular manga anthologies out there...

Why don't they join a video game magazine instead? Seriously, a comic magazine? Worst of all, V Jump? Oh look, there's Goku, *shudder*.

A Jump Ultimate Stars game for consoles perhaps? Which would be a bit doubtful since Nintendo directly developed those...
