Square Enix announces TGS lineup, lists Tobal comeback photo

Even more TGS lineup listings are coming out of Japan as we're now only 20 days away from the event. Japanese giant Square Enix now lays out the list of their wares, and it shows that some classic Square franchises are making a comeback.

The listing Tobal M (pictured above) is an eyebrow raiser... until you find out that it's a mobile game. Actually, half of their listed playable titles are Mobile only. We can appreciate that the mobile gaming market is growing in Japan, but they have to understand that non-Japanese gamers are going to be a bit bummed.

While we're still taking disappointments, we have to mention that mega-titles like Last Remnant, Dragon Quest IX, and Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII will only be shown in video form. At least this is playable. Hell, if it wasn't for the obligatory surprise announcements, Square Enix's TGS booth might even be a "pass."

Yeah, I don't really mean that. In fact, while digging around in Square Enix's TGS page (complete with annoying mock show floor noise), I found that line-waiting booth attendees should be able to nab the "Square Enix Music Sampler Vol. 2," which is grade-A swag to a geek like myself. They will have Music CDs and DVDs on sale as well. How did you miss that, IGN?

Hit the jump for a list of titles from Square Enix.

Please, for the love of all that's holy, stop getting Akira Toriyama to do character designs. Aside from Chrono Trigger, every character he makes looks like an existing Dragonball character in some way or another.

On the other hand, new FFT and Dragon Quest IX (and yeah, I realize the irony, here because of what I was bitching about)

I'm with SourGr8pes in this one. His art is alright. Chrono Trigger seemed to be the furthest he's gotten from the art style, since it's hard to transfer that to 2D Overhead. If they released a new Chrono Trigger with the same art style, the game would likely receive mediocre ratings and merely be passed off as "alright".

The guy really needs to develop a new character design, because as he does it at the moment - he sucks horridly. Every character looks near the same to something famous he's done already, but with a color change in skin tone and hair color, maybe an added bang on the front, or a thrown in belt to go around those huge foreheads, and he's done... When is he going to learn that "Different" does not mean "The same, but with a new fashion accessory"

Tobal 2 is my favoriate 3D fighter of all time. It's the only 3D fighter to do projectiles right, and it's single player adventure modewith it's Pokemon style moster capturing (you could catch any enemy in the game, even bosses, and use them in Vs mode) is a gameplay classic of a stature never before seen and not seen since in gaming history.

Some one at Square needs to get off the crack and release that game in he states, either on PSP, DS, Wii, whatever.

I'm a pretty ardent supporter of SE, and even I have to say that I'm a little disappointed by this. I'm not into mobile gaming, at all, and some playable console games would've been nice.

Don't get me wrong, I totally have a boner for SE's DS line-up, but ...

It may say for mobile phones, but I believe Square Enix are using these cell phone games to generate and measure interest in these games. Don't forget the also previously announced Parasite Eve 3 for mobiles, and if I'm right that's now lined up for a console launch too.

The same could easily happen with Tobal, as its long overdue an update, and we know Square Enix love the gingling sound of our cash. A good move really.

Perhaps they should also stick Tobal 1 and 2, on PSP UMD while they are at it.
