A new Dragon Quest Monsters is in the works, Square Enix revealed this weekend at a festival in Tokyo dedicated to the popular series.

The original Dragon Quest Monsters hit the Game Boy Color around the turn of the century, arriving hot on the heels of the nascent Pokémon phenomenon. The thematic similarities between the monster-collecting role-playing games lead many to draw comparisons between the franchises, though Dragon Quest Monsters puts a heavy emphasis on breeding.

In more recent years, the sub-series has anchored itself on Nintendo 3DS and mobile devices. No specific details regarding platforms for the upcoming title have been revealed at this time.
