Square Enix announces Infinite Undiscovery: great lineage, not-so-great title photo

Xbox 360 role-playing gamers should be excited to hear that Square Enix is announcing their next fantasy role-playing game for the console, though we don't expect that gamers will be too enthusiastic about its cringe-worthy title.

Nevermind the bad title: this new game comes from the creative minds at tri-Ace (makers of Valkryie Profile and the Star Ocean series) and RPG vets Square Enix, so it's probably safe to say that something interesting should come out of this collaboration.

In Infinite Undiscovery, players are taken into a real-time world "woven of countless threads where their choices will spin untold discoveries." The actions taken by the player with each discovery will have a real-time impact on the world.

The battles are carried out in real-time, bringing Star Ocean-like combat to this game's world, and all of the exploration and combat are supposed to take place within the same environment (no battle screen warp). The press release also mentions "situational battles" that would have players "executing a daring escape while a gigantic ogre follows in hot pursuit." The environment would change based on the commands and actions of the player in these situations.

Sadly, there's not much more information, and we were only provided with two screenshots. We'll keep our ear to the ground and let you know as soon as more details of Infinite Undiscovery surface.

Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of Square Enix™ interactive entertainment products in North America, announced today the upcoming release of INFINITE UNDISCOVERY™ for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

INFINITE UNDISCOVERY is the newest fantasy RPG developed by tri-Ace Inc. (STAR OCEAN®, VALKYRIE PROFILE®) for next-generation hardware. Players will be drawn into a real-time world woven of countless threads where their choices will spin untold discoveries. This title, combining the talents of both Square Enix and tri-Ace, will be an unforgettable experience.

 DISCOVERY & IMPACT

The actions taken by the player with each discovery will have a real-time impact on the world.

Situational Battles

Players will be confronted with a variety of dramatic "situational battles" such as executing a daring escape while a gigantic ogre follows in hot pursuit, or waging battle amidst towering tidal waves. The dynamic environments change and respond in real-time to player commands, creating an entirely new experience never before seen in the genre.

A Seamless World and Real-time Action

Combat, exploration, and other actions all take place within the same environment, seamlessly shifting between each game facet. Battles are carried out in real-time, bringing the vibrant fighting sequences of the STAR OCEAN series out of the traditional battle screen into a beautiful and lush environment.

Ha, I was reading about it yesterday, when it was noted as Infinite Discovery, not Undiscovery! Can you undiscover something?

If this takes anything after Star Ocean, I'm going to cream my pantss. Tri-Ace FTW. I loved the Second Story and 'Till the End of Time. This can't disappoint.

I saw some pics from ChronosBlade on this game and it looks super sweet.

The name however, leaves much to be desired. Like a fat naked chick.

Moreover, how do you undiscover something infinitely?

Yes, YEEEES! more JRPGs for the 360!

I just hope the game is so awesome that it offsets it's awkwardly dumb name.

SourGr8pes - that's my hopes as well. The two screenies look nice - though we can't tell much from them.

Maybe instead of starting out the game as a cliché hero with amnesia, the goal is to sustain enough head injuries to lose your all memories by the end? You start out a badass and LOSE levels the further you go.

Y'know, I wonder what that giant hornet was doing with all those gold coins...

No matter.

Reundiscovery Divided By Zero.

Game looks nice. Should play well. I'll hope that someone at S-E gets kicked in the head and realizes what an awful name it is.

This game's title makes me think of the Phantasy Star series. I got to thinking about how something could be infinitely undiscovered and realized that Dark Force/Falz was something that was infinitely undiscovered... Someone would discover it, then kill it, then it would be undiscovered only to arrive 1000 years later after everyone's forgotten about it.
