The latest installment in the revered Dungeon Siege series has been announced today for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, developed by Obsidian and published by, of all companies, Square Enix. This strange collaboration will mark the console debut of the RPG series, as well as the continuation of Obsidian's "develop other people's franchises" strategy.
The game will be worked on with help from original studio Gas Powered Games and will allegedly keep "the best features" of previous installments, as well as add "intuitive action gameplay" in an "immersive world where every decision you make has a consequence."
"This partnership with Square Enix is a milestone for the franchise and Obsidian," says Obsidian boss Feargus Urquhart, "and the qualities of two companies in terms of scenario will be visible throughout the game."
A very interesting development indeed, although one wonders how thin Obsidian is stretching itself with New Vegas still on the cards. Nevertheless, exciting times for Western RPG fans!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
It's gunna be one of those weeks....
hahaha
Good news Jim, thanks!
Goody goody. Now we can have a buggy, unpolished Dungeon Siege too! Thanks Square.
I played KotOR II from beginning to end at launch, friend. Plenty of people have hated Obsidian before Jim's review.
The strange thing is, what they do finish usually turns out quite well. Its what they don't finish that turned me against them. If New Vegas turns out well, I'm willing to chalk their prior efforts up to dealings with bad publishers. If they botch that though, there's no helping them.
Ah, nostalgia. Good times.
Then we have Torchlight, which is an amazing game at a low, low price.
I can tell you it wouldn't score as high as Oblivion or Sacred though.
Rock on.
Alpha Protocol support, New Vegas and Support, Wheel of Time (and support) and Dungeon Siege 3. Bloody hell.
Anyway, I'm always looking for dungeon crawlers/loot grinders. Maybe this won't be terrible. However, they better get it out befor Diablo III. Otherwise, anyone that's not a masochist won't give a damn.
On the actual article, I don't really know crap about the series so I can't say I'm interested, but Square Enix is publishing, maybe this game will get some Pretty Prerendered cutscenes too??
No.
also @pwnsauce
how can you complain about trolling when all you do...
is troll about the evils of Jim Sterling?
i thought the controlls for sacred 2 on console where pretty good. so everything is not lost.
but obisadain can do a much better job then gas power did with the red headed stepchild which was dungeon siege 2 it was still fun but at times it felt like a diablo 2 knock off but with a party.
theres also another competitor trying to loot your wallets

not bad...i guess...screenshots wise
All of you stop whining and tell me if this game is as good as Baulder's Gate I & II? Or Demon's Souls? Something else I can relate to since I've never seen anything about this series till this "You all have a case of the mondays morning"
Thank you
@pwnsauce ...stealth troll? Craptragedy, I've been found out. I suppose I should just admit to myself that I have an epic man crush on Jim Sterling.
Jim, I have an epic man crush on you.
Depends whether or not you count a handheld as a console. My wife is currently playing "Throne of Agony" on PSP.
I always thought GAS was owned by Microsoft, so I'm very surprised to see this on PS3 (and 360 for that matter, but that exception can be made).
"Fallout: New Vegas, NeverWinter Nights, KoTOR... does anyone else want to loan Obsidian their RPG series?"
Kind of funny, considering each of the titles they were "loaned" turned out to be utter crap in my opinion. Well cant say that about New Vegas yet, but NWN2 and KoToR 2 were absolutely crap in my opinion.
Also would actually check up on whether the game was rushed due to the developer or publisher?
Anybody?
