Square Enix and Obsidian announce Dungeon Siege 3 photo

The latest installment in the revered Dungeon Siege series has been announced today for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, developed by Obsidian and published by, of all companies, Square Enix. This strange collaboration will mark the console debut of the RPG series, as well as the continuation of Obsidian's "develop other people's franchises" strategy.

The game will be worked on with help from original studio Gas Powered Games and will allegedly keep "the best features" of previous installments, as well as add "intuitive action gameplay" in an "immersive world where every decision you make has a consequence."

"This partnership with Square Enix is a milestone for the franchise and Obsidian," says Obsidian boss Feargus Urquhart, "and the qualities of two companies in terms of scenario will be visible throughout the game."

A very interesting development indeed, although one wonders how thin Obsidian is stretching itself with New Vegas still on the cards. Nevertheless, exciting times for Western RPG fans!

Dear Jim Sterling, I have hated you for as long as I can remember. However, after seeing an interview you did with Hip Hop Gamer this weekend while tempting the fates at N4G, I have a profoundly new perspective on you. I do still believe that you are a troll and you are definitely fatter than even I could have imagined but seeing you side by side with an even bigger troll made me realize that you aren't that bad when considering the alternatives. Good Day Sir.

I have the first game plus expansion and yet to beat it. It didn't seem bad for what it was. Still need to look up DS2 however.

Hmm. I own the first two for the PC and think they're pretty fun. Should be interesting to see how this works on a console (as well as whether or not Obsidion butchers it).

I'm just a silly console game who has never heard of this series. Anyone want to give me a few details? You know, to save me the massive effort it would take to google it.

DS2 was a pretty fun game. I can only hope Obsidian would make it better.

I loved dungeon siege. But till the day diablo3 hasnt arrived every game that just comes close to the genre will be shredded to parts. Last seen on Sacred2. Diablo3 fanboys are the worst.

Obsidian?

Goody goody. Now we can have a buggy, unpolished Dungeon Siege too! Thanks Square.

This needs couch co-op on consoles. When confirmed, they will have my pre-order, obsidian knows their action rpgs.

Hey, remember when a certain Englishman was assigned to review a game in a genre he hated anyway and proceeded to give said game an abysmally low score, thereby influencing a bunch of gullible readers to hate the studio who developed the game for no good reason?

Hey remember when I gave a game the score I felt it deserved and a bunch of drama queens called it "abysmally low" because they have no sense of perspective and then decided that I hate Western RPGs even though I really like them because they had to assign some hidden agenda to not loving the same game they loved?

I played KotOR II from beginning to end at launch, friend. Plenty of people have hated Obsidian before Jim's review.

The strange thing is, what they do finish usually turns out quite well. Its what they don't finish that turned me against them. If New Vegas turns out well, I'm willing to chalk their prior efforts up to dealings with bad publishers. If they botch that though, there's no helping them.

What the hell! Obsidian may not have the best programmers in the world, but they do have some of the best writers / designers, and now the best business management in the Universe! From licking the scraps of their Bigger Brother Bioware to getting 3 publishing deals with 3 different publishers (Bethesda/Zenimax, SEGA, Square Enix). Two of them Big RPG Publishers and the other a company desperately needing another hit.

I've wanted to believe in Obsidian given the veteran talent they have at their studio, but I can't help but feel scared for any game with their name attached to it. Besides that, Dungeon Siege was a great 1-off game to tide people over between Diablo games (2 was more of the same, but somehow less...), but now there's an actual Diablo game coming out. I hope they decide to save this one for at least a couple of years after Diablo 3.
Then we have Torchlight, which is an amazing game at a low, low price.

Phantom Spaceman: I never reviewed those games so I don't know. Unlike some people, score isn't the be-all and end-all for me. I'd have to write the review first and then align the text with the score system to see what I come up with.

I can tell you it wouldn't score as high as Oblivion or Sacred though.

You know, this might be good. On one hand, it's hard to screw up the basic bits of a dungeon crawler. Really hard. On the other, if you do a by-the-numbers game, it usually is pretty bland (Torchlight, where I'm afraid Diablo III is going). This sounds like it could inject some new life into a genre that is literally impossible to fuck up. Neverwinter Nights 2 has basically the same mechanical things, and they didn't screw that up. xD

Don't get distracted by these retards. Your scores are spot on. Everyone bitching about how game industry needs to mature. Realistic scores are one way of getting there. These multi-million budget releases need to start feeling the numbers.

Rock on.

Anyway, I'm always looking for dungeon crawlers/loot grinders. Maybe this won't be terrible. However, they better get it out befor Diablo III. Otherwise, anyone that's not a masochist won't give a damn.

Can Jim make an article without someone making a shit about how he apparently scores thing low for lulz or how he's some sort of "Epic troll" or whatever?

On the actual article, I don't really know crap about the series so I can't say I'm interested, but Square Enix is publishing, maybe this game will get some Pretty Prerendered cutscenes too??

As a troll myself I can spot fellow trolls fairly easily. Like you, you are a stealth troll. You don't want to believe you are a troll, but your evident love toward all things Destructoid and the unwilligness to just let a comment slide by without Trolling shows that you are a troll. Much like Sterling, he is now trolling again. Trolling for sympathy.

but obisadain can do a much better job then gas power did with the red headed stepchild which was dungeon siege 2 it was still fun but at times it felt like a diablo 2 knock off but with a party.

All of you stop whining and tell me if this game is as good as Baulder's Gate I & II? Or Demon's Souls? Something else I can relate to since I've never seen anything about this series till this "You all have a case of the mondays morning"

Thank you

@TheJesusNinja26 It's quite a bit more action oriented than BG or NWN... it's kind of comparable to Diablo II. That (for me anyway) is probably the closest comparison. I believe there are sizable demos for both games though.

@pwnsauce ...stealth troll? Craptragedy, I've been found out. I suppose I should just admit to myself that I have an epic man crush on Jim Sterling.

Wow...probably would have been awesome news if Gas Powered Games had been the one developing it. Thanks Jim for the news, but i sense a epic fail from this game. I own the first two and still play them quite often considering their age, they are great RPG's. I have to agree with the one post, all i can see coming out of this is a buggy, unpolished Dungeon Siege, how wonderful. I have absolutely no faith in either Square or Obsidian, i hope they do not destroy this game series but will keep a eye on it anyway. Its Dungeon Siege, im too much of a fanboy of the series not to watch it.

Depends whether or not you count a handheld as a console. My wife is currently playing "Throne of Agony" on PSP.

Lol "revered". First game was alright, 2nd was a lot more of the same, which was a shame as times had moved on. I have almost no faith in this rendition (more because of the franchise than because of Obsidian (I liked KOTOR 2!)).

The first was great for it's lack of load screens and decent campaign. The 2nd didn't top it, but it definitely provided a lot of content. A 3rd, and after 6 years, doesn't seem to pique my interest.

I always thought GAS was owned by Microsoft, so I'm very surprised to see this on PS3 (and 360 for that matter, but that exception can be made).

Unless either of the above mentioned companies bought the rights to Dungeon Siege, if thats the case then that was a pretty fucking stupid move for Gas Powered Games, since Dungeon Siege was/is a pretty popular title. At least i believe so anyway.

Sorry for double commenting, but thought this part was pretty hilarious from that CVG article announcing DS3.

"Fallout: New Vegas, NeverWinter Nights, KoTOR... does anyone else want to loan Obsidian their RPG series?"

Kind of funny, considering each of the titles they were "loaned" turned out to be utter crap in my opinion. Well cant say that about New Vegas yet, but NWN2 and KoToR 2 were absolutely crap in my opinion.

Hey guys, remember when people simply used reviews as a guide, and preferred word of mouth reviews to professional reviews due to the fact there's a lot more normal people to professional reviewers, who may either not like the genre, may have a very bad copy of a game, be biased, or just plain unlucky?

Also would actually check up on whether the game was rushed due to the developer or publisher?

Anybody?
