Square debuts Lord of Vermillion in Shinjuku Taito Station photo

Square trademarked the name Lord of Vermillion way back in 2007, but those of us with hopes for a new RPG were to be sorely disappointed. We had heard since that Square planned to release a Japan-only arcade game. Head honcho Yoichi Wada actually attended the premiere of the card-based arcade game recently at Shinjuku Taiko Station, and Kotaku has some great pics up from the event. From their article:

In LoV and other similar card-based games, players moved cards around on a sensor field, which corresponds to their on-screen movement in real time. These arcade games are a tad on the pricey side, forcing players to not only pay-per-play but also for the actual cards themselves.

I love card/action hybrids; I wish the US could have seen this game. Sounds like the cards are a bit expensive, but considering they are collectible items in and of themselves, surely the Japanese will be ponying up for an opportunity to check them out. What do you think of all this card arcade business?

Honestly, I think I missed the boat on card-battle games. It's a genre that I don't understand, and have never exposed myself to.

It's interesting food for thought, especially considering that a powerhouse developer has decided to jump into the fray. I'll have to blog about it or something.

Is there a must-have card/battle game available?

while we're on the subject of card/action hybrids, there needs to be something like a next-gen Phantom Dust.

I thought for a minute the title said Sword of Vermillion, you know, that lackluster Genesis RPG. Reminds me of Eye of Judgement for PS3 (which was pretty rad if you could set it up)

Personally, I'm bothered by the concept of having to pay real-life money in order to continue playing something- or shelling out money for the chance of being able to do better in a game.

Yeah, the whole money and rare card luck factor of CCGs is what's turned me off from them. I have friends that blew thousands of dollars on Magic cards back in the day... Kinda scary.

After witnessing my little brother go through his "Pokemon Trading Card Game" phase (even bought the GBA card game), I realized that stuff like this just isn't worth it.

Those card arcade games are crazy. The most popular one is the Romance of the Three Kingdoms RTS game.
