Yoichi Wada, Square-Enix CEO, dealt Sony a bit of a punch to the stomach today in a CNet Japan interview (lovingly translated by Kotaku) where he calls Microsoft the only platform holder that has remained dedicated to the games market. Direct translations go a little bit like this:
“The Wii is the antithesis of the Xbox 360. The 360 is strictly for hardcore gamers. The attachment rate for the Xbox 360 is much higher than for the Wii.
“People who buy the 360 really like games. I think the current trend is that most people aren't buying the Wii as a game machine, but as a toy.
“It seems that Sony isn't sure what it wants to do. Is it making high-end electronics or a game console for gamers? I want them to clearly define their console.”
Calling the Wii as a toy doesn't sting so badly, as most people consider it that anyway. Stating confusion over Sony's intentions is a whole new ballgame, as the release of Final Fantasy XIII is widely considered to be an essential system seller and would greatly help the PS3. There have been many rumors about whether the title will stay exclusive to Sony or go multi-platform, and while this in no way acts as evidence of that, it does not bode well.
I love my PS3, but I have to admit the idea of getting achievements for a Final Fantasy makes me tingle all the way down to my fingertips.

if FF13 went multi platform i think it would be a sure sign that we are living in the end times.
when was the last good rpg those guys made. ff12 was ff11 single player. yuck.
10 and 10-2, lol...
ff9 was the last good one, i hope ff13 picks up where that left off.
sony is doing it right, they dropped the price, and gave developers the most powerful console ever made, to make amazing games that look amazing like uncharted for example.
square spreads its self thin now, and that is why all their games suck shit now. back in the ff7 thru ff9 days, there were sony only, and devoted it all to those games, and that is why those are the best rpgs ever made. now thier games lack big time..
square needs to find its focus and deliver a "REAL" rpg again.
they are doing nothing right for the "hardcore console" gammer of today. nickel and dimming, unfair market bully, sabotaging hd dvd and blue ray like michael bay says, doing under hand bs like they did with windows back in the day.. microsoft is a slimy ball of shit. that the government should of busted up long ago. they are an evil monopoly..
microsoft is illegal. they have broken so many laws its not even funny.
but you know what is funny?
hint: the joke's on you
I don't know if they are really considering a move to non-exclucivity but its certainly a warning to Sony.
Also, not really, but I just wanna piss people off.
Only way Sony can survive is if they get a Time Warp machine and fix their issue of not helping game developers tap into ps3 before it was launched.
That is Sony's biggest mistake. And there is no problem with developing for it, look @ Insomaniac studios, look how many badass games they made from left and right. But, Sony left too many studios learn of the ps3 to dam near of Ps3's launch or even after.
and fix Home -.- make that crap fun, not a copy of 2ndLife... Probably a world ala "Pain" were I can push JimSterling into a oncoming bus and laugh. :)
Now last I checked, Nintendo are pretty much all for every gamer. be it casual or hardcore. They're customer service is still Top tier stuff. Sony needs to work on that and Microsoft...well they're just money hungry to that point.
Now me having a 360 and 2 years back when it first hit, I had no plan of getting it. Mainly cause it's just FPS and sports galore. Now that they're trying to open their minds to other game genres, it's helping. But I wouldn't call them the ones who care about hardcore gamers just yet. When Wiis are actually in stock and get some solid titles and Sony gets the PS3 with their solid game lineups, Microsoft won't look so high and mighty.
Let alone, Microsoft is the only one that still have RRoDs every now and then.
Hopefully that means that more FF games are coming to 360!
If they're the ones screwing everything up, mission accomplished. :)
It's not an attack on Sony's strategy per se; he's just expressing his trepidation about the installed base in the oblique Japanese style.
And why wouldn't he? MGS4 is heavily subsidized, and that's the only way they could pay for its development; he's saying that without the same treatment, he's going to move his games multiplatform, so he can have some acceptable profit at the end of the day.
Hexfix, truth hurts.
As for Wada-san's comments, I'm surprised people are even surprised developers are saying such things. I'm not going to fully agree that Microsoft is doing everything right as the RROD problems have shown us, but they have made in-roads in trying to fix it to the tune of 1+ billion dollars. Sony has moved closer to actually marketing the PS3 as a gaming machine instead of something that's going to help cure my dad's cancer. Nintendo is still being Nintendo and I haven't been a fan of theirs since the N64 days.
If FFXIII stays a PS3 exclusive I predict it will be the last game released from Squeenix which will remain a platform exclusive title/franchise. Games for this new generation of consoles are just too expensive too make with everyone wanting graphics to fap over and sound to make one's ears bleed.
Come on now, we are still talking about gaming right? A hobby to some, addiction to others.. not leaking national secrets. Now I love Nintendo but they are obviously more geared toward casual gamers this round, and until Ken took his leave calling the PS3 a gaming console was anathema to Sony. He's calling it like he sees it. Before you spout more xenophobic hearsay ask yourself this ... how is this going to personally effect you?
Japan adore/loce/rape Nintendo as it is.
This whole corporate fanboyism, national pride, and under-the-table deals hurts the customer and the industry.
One indecisive CEO makes an inane, Kutaragi-like statement and the internet is on fire, lol.
And get rid of that dumbass Pink tie while your at it.
RRRrrrr
I actually envisioned this sentence ending in "naughty bits" instead of fingertips.
I don't see the point of achievements anymore, though. And, honestly, the PS3 can do better like they did with Uncharted's medals (I found it way more satisfying to actually get something in return for getting the medals as opposed to achievements when I play on my 360).
I'm sorry, did you mean "Microsoft has broken the law"? Because, yes, most major corporations have. Do you think Sony is above this? If so, you're another babbling retard fanboy.
Wait- didn't they, rather recently, go and vandalize some office buildings with "Playstation" branding? Oh, I guess thats not illegal as long as you have FFXIII and Square behind you.
p.s. Have fun with Linux! Protip: drivers are non-existent there!
EXCLUSIVE to Xbox 360 is not going to happen but MULTI PLATFORM is entirely possible. It doesn't matter what the sales are like in Japan for the 360, the fact remains that if you want your multi-million dollar next-gen fancy game to sell well in the US, it should either be on X360 or be multi-platform. The install base (at the moment) isn't large enough for any company to release AAA exclusive games for either platform though unless they are given an incentive (i.e. money).
If they really didn't think they'd make money on the Japanese 360 version they could just release it in the US like Sega was originally going to do with Virtua fighter 5.
This is indeed square asking for more money from sony.
So i fart in your general direction Square bring out White Knight
