Square announces The Last Remnant, because they don't make enough money photo

Game Informer has the skinny on the new Square Enix title just a few days before Square-Enix party 2007, which may mean much more information is right around the corner. For now though, there are definitely some juicy bits. Here's a bit of detail:

The Last Remnant

Release: TBA - Next Generation Consoles - 1 Player RPG

One thousand years ago humanity came into contact with Remnants. These magical fragments of a bygone era were once used to promote peace across the world. Soon, as the rift grew between those who ruled and those who obeyed, the remnants ceased being instruments of balance, and instead became paths to immeasurable power. Where once there had been peace, only bloodshed remained.

- Released simultaneously in U.S. and Japan

-Two prominent characters each created to appeal to a specific territory. Rush Sykes will appeal to JP gamers, and "The Conqueror" for Western Audiences. Game won't force you to choose which character you play.

- Remnants vary in size and can take the form of machines, beasts, and weapons.

- 4 races revealed: Mitra (humans), Yama (Large fish-like beings), Qsiti (small humanoid lizards), Sovanni (four armed cat like creatures)

- Battle System will not be passive and will include QTEs in certain instances. Fights still take place in a turn based frame work.

- This is the first UE3 game SE will be releasing. Graphics look great so no worries there.

Ah, Sony. How golden your future must have looked on the PS2. A best selling console, major Final Fantasy titles your exclusive property, and no sight of the trainwrecks yet to come. How's this for a case of not what you had in mind? At any rate, I think it's a good time for Square to attempt a new IP. Personally, I'm afraid to watch the Tetsuo morphing of the beast that is the Final Fantasy franchise too closely. What do you think, peeps? Excited, or don't give two sh*ts?

It's about time! I'm getting tired of hearing about Final Fantasy Versus XIII: Crystal Chronicles: Legend of the New Knight 2 Final ReMix+ Jambalaya Edition.

Why do I have a feeling that we'll hear this is from the people that gave us the Drakengard games?

That's the best they can come up with? A reused shitty formula of a formula of a formula? While it the gameplay it says interest me, I can't help but hate Square more for their lack of...well anything.

oh yeah... I forgot to mention that they felt the need to create a character specifically for Western audiences. Also note the not-so-subtle evilness of his countenance. Yeah... Nice move Square...

Well, at least we won't another adrogynous she-male lead. Maybe a little Westernization will help Square. I couldn't be happier.

i'll take the two FF 13's over something from the guy who brought us "The Bouncer"

Well James.... I gotta disagree with you there. I think I'm one of the few who actually thought The Bouncer was good. Even if the story fell a little short, you have to admit that the game had a little bit of replay value to it.

Square Enix, new IP, wow took them long enough.

Ouch. The Western character is known as "The Conqueror". There's a subtle-as-a-shotgun-blast swing at this administration's international politics, as well as our appearance to those beyond our shores.

Well, a new ip could be something fresh and invigorating... but it will proabably be a FF knockoff

DannyLove99,

I am not sure if that was a political jab, but it might be...

------

Personally, I figured that they *assuming the fella on the right is "The Conqueror"* chose to go with this kind of character because of all the American complaints of "masculinity"... You know, those overly massive pumped up sexual gods of geeks in their basements complaining that the male characters looked to "girly."

not sure how you can really say whether or not this game would be an FF knock off... the FF franchise has become so damn ill defined, they barely have anything in common that holds the together... really, there used to be more to define what made an FF game, but many of the titles since Squre and Enix merger pretty much weeded out most of those differences... I think the only thing FF games have in common any more are moogles, chocobos and guys named Cid...

What's the deal with that sony comment? Square clearly announced earlier that they will be whoring out as much as possible.

The Bouncer had reply value because you could play through it in like 45 minutes. =)

I've been hoping S-E would work on something new, but this sounds exactly like a Final Fantasy game. Time will tell, but I'm not getting too excited just yet.

So... Ok, so everyone complains about Square never making non-FF games, even when some of the games they have made could have been games all on their own and didn't need to be named as FF (... and yet, when Square announces that they ARE making a new IP that will not actually carry the FF namel; many poeple bash it without knowing any real details, just a few vague pieces of info... what's up with that?
JamesSorensen's Avatar

Monte, we are all waiting for a trailer yes... it could be good, just the way the first info comes out it doesn't seem anything worth while yet.

You know what?

Fuck all that noise. This game will be a success, as proven by this indisputable syllogism:

1. This game is pretty.

2. Regulus is a graphics whore (to the maxx).

3. Regulus knows a lot of people who are also graphics whores.

4. Graphics whores like pretty games (see 1.)

THEREFORE,

5. This game will make millions off eye candy alone.

Ed. Note: This principle can be applied to Crysis, Haze, Halo 3, Mass Effect, BioShock, and Alan Wake with little to no modification.

Another turn-based RPG? I seriously wish turn-based RPGs would just die... forever. I can promise you I will not be playing this game and I hate it already for that reason alone. Will the Japanese fucking evolve already?
