SPORTS! EA shutting down some old servers next month photo

Over at the official EA website, the publishing juggernaut has a new list of games for which they will no longer provide servers for online play. While some of the games are surprisingly old, such as NHL 07, there are a couple which may have an impact on SPORTS! gamers who may not feel the need to update to the most recent version.

If you're still playing last year's edition of the Madden franchise online, you're going to want to pick up Madden 10 sometime in the next month, as the servers are shutting down across all platforms on February 2nd.

Some of the games are just old, while a few look like they might be getting turned off due to popularity. NASCAR 09 servers are closing, but only in Europe where I believe Formula-1 racing is the dominant automotive sport. If I had to guess why they're ceasing to support Facebreaker, it would be because the game in question is Facebreaker, but it seems a bit odd considering that the game just hit Xbox Live's Games on Demand service in early December.

All of the games will have online multiplayer available until February 2nd, but EA does warn that some community-oriented online features may disappear in the days leading up to the server shutdowns. You can view the full list after the jump.

You know what's got to be weird, playing the last game of one of these online.

I know I focus more on achievements than any non-obsessed gamer really should, but you have to consider the fact that any of these games that have online achievements will never be able to be 100% completed after this date. Seems kind of weird to me, to have a game stare me down and say "No matter how good you are or how much you play me, you'll never get these X achievements." Not that I ever planned to play any of these games anyway (that's for the achievement whores), but it's just something that seems "wrong" to me. Well, you know, besides the fact that who shuts down servers on 360 other than EA? The day they shut down Burnout Paradise's servers, people are going to be vicious.

Anyway, I note that NBA 07 is on there, the one with an achievement to be online with 1,000 at the same time. I hear Xbox360Achievements.org is going to make a final push to get that achievement sometime before the servers close. Pretty sure it's one of the rarest achievements out there.

Let me get this straight. EA shuts down 25 games released within 3 years and Blizzard is still patching games released in the 90s?

Ok, I understand how this would affect a system with no peer to peer network infrastructure such as the PS2 and the Wii and the PC's reliance on dedicated servers, but the x360? I thought the main reason why they made xbox live peer to peer in the first place was to prevent situations such as this one from occurring.

I mean, I can still play some older x360 games and see some games pop up even stuff like Senko no Ronde or Ridge Racer 6 where the population on both games are pretty slim.

Maybe there is something about these EA sports games that I don't know about (though I may find out in about a year or two when my copy of NHL 09 stops working online).

Well, they saw that Samit had moved on to Portal and realized no one was playing the games anymore.

actuall fogo, as I recall, EA basiucally whined like mad until Microsoft made a special exception for them where EA runs their own servers. specifically so they can do this.

this is why I haven't bought an EA game in years.

also, why doesn't MS step in when online games get their servers pulled?

I understand they take down nascar-servers in Europe, nobody plays that crap... who wants to drive in a circle for hours on end when you've got so many great tracks? Never understood the appeal of that don't even get why you'd wanna watch it...

This is such a excellent resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It?s the old what goes around comes around routine. Whirlpool Baths
