The day we'd all been waiting for, then grew bored of waiting for, then got excited about again is nearly here. After years of hype and delay after delay Spore has finally been given a release date. Retailers will have copies of Spore available for PC, Mac, DS, and mobile phones come September 7th.
The infamous Will Wright is quoted as saying, "We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year." A song and dance we've seen before, though never in concert with an actual release date.
Bemoan the long wait all you like, I'm nearly certain that those having given up on Spore, the heretics if you will, will soon be rejoining the fold, frothing at the mouth along with the rest of us for the next 6 months. Sadly, the hype built up around Spore may be it's undoing, as nothing short of this game unboxing and installing itself, then proceeding to fulfill your most disgusting, deviant fantasies could possibly live up to the expectations that have been built up around it.
Redwood City, CA - February 12, 2008 - Get ready for the next Big Bang this fall! Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Maxis today announced that Spore™, the highly anticipated game from the creators of The Sims™, will be available at retailers worldwide the weekend of September 7. Spore will be available for the PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS™, and mobile phones.
"The wait is almost over," said Maxis Chief Designer Will Wright. "We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year."
Spore gives players their own personal universe in a box. Create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a universe created by other gamers. Spore gives players a wealth of creative tools to customize nearly every aspect of their universe: creatures, vehicles, buildings, and even UFOs. Players can then seamlessly share their creations with the world or explore infinite new galaxies created by other gamers.
Consumers can visit www.spore.com to sign up for the Spore newsletter or check out all-new screenshots and video of the game. Members of the media can visit EA's press site at www.info.ea.com for information about all of EA's games.
I can't wait to sweep through the universe enslaving each and every Dtoid member's civilization one by one... even if they'll never know it. :) Hope the date sticks. This is the first time they've given a actual day, so there's a chance.
Why does it need to be ported to a cell phone?
I'm excited but I hope it's worth the wait...I have faith in Will Wright but then again his games are fun for awhile but quickly they lose interest.
This game looks so badass I wish they came out with it for 360. I pretty much gave up hope on trying to keep up with modern computer games. I only use my lappy for abandonware point and clicks like monkey island or day of the tentacle. My computer was outdated about 2 weeks after I got it... oh well I'll cross my fingers for the privileged ones that get to indulge >_<
I can't wait for this game. It's my most anticipated PC title ever. The possibilities and replay value are literally endless. September can't come soon enough.
The longer the wait the better. I want to sink a lot of time into Spore, but I'll only feel right doing that if I'm caught up with the umpteen games I'm playing now.
Though it was missing in the press release, this submission and the joystiq article (who actually broke this first I believe, which is incredible), it is worthy to restate that though it may be after the Sept. 7 date, this has been announced for Wii:
So December then? My cynical side can't help but rise up to retaliate at a release date. It's defending me from the chance of disappointment if they delay it. But I'll keep my fingers crossed that since it being so close to my birthday....Ah what am I saying I'm going to own that game as soon as it comes out.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. All that waiting made me forget.

You lost a customer after you built too much hype and delayed too long.

its becoming pretty boring to see games getting delayed over and over again...
That is all.
Yeah, it's six months away, but at least we have a concrete release now. Unless they pull a SSBB on us and pull it back until 2009. >.>
